Two Security Force (SF) personnel were killed during an encounter with militants in Khrew area in Pampore town in Pulwama District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on January 21, reports Daily Excelsior. Acting on a tipoff, SFs including 50 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) of Army and Awantipora Police raided a militant hideout in Zantrag forest area in Khrew where militants were believed to be hiding. As the SFs zeroed-in on the hideout in the forest village, the hiding militants fired indiscriminately on the troops resulting in fatal injuries to an Army and Special Operation Group (SOG) personnel, identified as Rifleman Rahul of 50 RR and SOG personnel Shahbaz Ahmad of Manjakote in Rajouri, who later succumbed to their injuries. Militants fled from the spot after the initial encounter and SFs conducted searches of the forest villages but could not trace them.

Two Security Force (SF) personnel sustained injuries when Militants hurled a grenade on a Police post in Noorbagh area of Srinagar town in Srinagar District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on January 24, reports Daily Excelsior. The injured SF personnel were identified as Hariharan, a jawan(trooper) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and Sartaj Ahmad, a Constable of Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP). A group of militants opened fire at a Police team near Ban Toll Plaza on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH) in Jammu District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) early on January 31 (today), triggering a gunfight in which three militants were killed and a Policeman sustained injuries, reports Daily Excelsior. The firing took place around 5 am when a Police team stopped a Srinagar-bound truck for checking near the Toll Plaza in Ban area of Nagrota. Director General of Police (DGP), Dilbagh Singh said 3-4 terrorists were going to Srinagar when they were intercepted by the Police team at the toll plaza. Three militants were killed in the ensuing gunfight while one of them is believed to be in the trap, he said.The truck driver Mohamamd Mabool was arrested and has been taken into custody for questioning, adds The Indian Express. Four weapons and some ammunition and explosives have also been recovered from the spot. The DGP said the terrorists were part of a freshly infiltrated group, who have entered this side from the International Border (IB) in Hiranagar in Kathua District and were on their way to Kashmir Valley. The identity of the slain militants and their group affiliation are yet to be ascertained.

Two Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were killed and a Special Task Force (STF) trooper was injured in separate encounters in Sukma and Narayanpur Districts of Chhattisgarh on February 19, reports The Pioneer. In the Sukma incident, the exchange of fire took place in a forest near Tondamarka village when a team of the District Reserve Guard (DRG) was out on a counter-insurgency operation, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Bastar range, Sundarraj P said. In another exchange of fire that occurred near Kasalpad village, one STF trooper was injured, he added. When a DRG patrolling team was cordoning off a forest area on Chintagufa-Chintalnar junction, an exchange of fire broke out between the two sides, and after the encounter the body of a Maoist was later recovered from the spot. Also, when Security Forces (SFs) were returning after the operation, an exchange of fire took place in the forest near Kasalpad that left one STF trooper injured, Sundarraj said. The identity of the slain Maoist is yet to be ascertained. In another incident, a Maoist was gunned down in an encounter with the SFs near Ikul village in Abujhmaad area in Narayanpur District of Chhattisgarh on February 19, reports The Pioneer. Superintendent of Police (SP), Narayanpur, Mohit Garg, said, "After a brief exchange of fire, ultras escaped into the dense forest. During the search, the body of a Naxal was recovered from the spot." The identity of the slain Maoist was yet to be ascertained, he added.

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre attacked and injured a Police Head Constable and snatched his rifle in Narayanpur District of Chhattisgarh on March 4, reports Telangana Today. According to a Police Official, a group of Police personnel were returning to their barracks after a routine patrol at a weekly market in the said District when the Maoist attacked Head Constable Ramprasad Bhagat. The Maoist hit Bhagat with an axe, snatched his INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) assault rifle and fled into the forest, the Official added.

Militants opened fire upon the Police party near Warpora Police post, killing an SPO on the spot and injuring another Policeman and a civilian. Later, the civilian identified as Umar Subhan (22) succumbed to injuries. A trooper of Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) was injured in an exchange of fire with Maoists near Aamdai Ghati forest under Chhotedongar Police Station limits in Narayanpur District of Chhattisgarh on March 4, reports The Pioneer. According to a Police Official, a joint team of Security Forces (SFs) comprising CAF and District Force was out on patrolling to ensure security to a road construction work in the area. When the SFs were advancing through the forest adjacent to the said forest, the Maoists opened fire at them leading to an exchange of fire in which the Head Constable Anand Bhagat, belonging to CAF's 9th Battalion, sustained bullet injuries, the Official said adding that a search operation was initiated in the area.

Awasthi, on receiving a tip-off about the presence of the Maoists in the said area, a group of over a hundred personnel belonging to District Reserve Guard (DRG), Special Task Force (STF) and Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) unit of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) had launched an anti-Maoist operation. The Maoists, however, triggered Improvised Explosive Device (IED)explosions and opened fire at the SFs leading to an exchange of fire in which 12 DRG and five STF personnel were killed while 15 of them were injured, the DGP added. The Maoists also looted a Light Machine Gun(LMG), 14 assault rifles and an Under-Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL) from the possession of the deceased SFs. Soon after abducting constable Sartaj Ahmed Itoo, posted with Indian Railways, from his home in Sheerpora area in Yaripora in Kulgam on Friday evening, the militants were taking him away in a car when the vehicle was intercepted by a joint team of SFs at a checkpoint in Kharpora in Arwani area in Bijbehara.“The policemen signalled them to stop. The abductors, however, opened fire at the security personnel and were killed after a brief gunfight, while the constable was rescued. Two District Reserve Guard (DRG) troopers were injured in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion triggered by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres in a forest under Katekalyan Police Station Limits in Dantewada District of Chhattisgarh on July 6, reports Outlook. According to a Police official, the incident took place when a DRG team was returning to base after destroying a Maoist transit camp. The Security Forces (SFs) also recovered six IEDs from two separate places in the same operation. “Acting on a tip-off about a Naxal [Left Wing Extremist, LWE] transit camp in the forest near Marjum village, a DRG team launched an operation on the night of July 5. When the team reached the spot, on July 6 morning, Naxals had fled leaving behind three IEDs, each weighing five kilograms.” the official said adding that “later on the way back, they recovered three IEDs, each weighing two kilograms, in Kalepal. Meanwhile, two personnel came in contact with a pressure IED connection, triggering a blast in which both sustained minor injuries. The recovered IEDs have been neutralised by the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS).”

In one incident, Maoists exchanged fire with a team of Police in the forest near Thokkuguda village of Thiryani Mandal (administrative sub-division) in Komaram Bheem Asifabad District on July 14. No casualties were reported on any side and the Maoists escaped taking advantage of the dense forest. The Superintendent of Police (SP) Vishnu S. Warrier said, “around 10.30 p.m. on July 14, when Police parties were searching in Thokkuguda village, a Maoist Dalam (armed squad) carrying AK 47 and SLR weapons attempted to fire at us and we retaliated. As a result, the Dalam fled from the scene in the dark.” Following this incident, Police arrested a Maoist sympathiser – Kova Ananth Rao of Thokkuguda in Thiryani Mandal for sheltering the Maoist Dalam. According to the SP, Kova Ananth Rao gave food and shelter to the Dalam led by State Committee member Mailarepu Adellu alias Bhaskar. According to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sundarraj Patilingam, the incident took place when Suresh had gone to a weekly market in the village to buy essentials. Two persons, dressed as civilians, repeatedly attacked him with an axe, leaving him dead on the spot. Komra was posted at the Kutru Police Station, the IGP said adding that “Prima facie, the modus operandi of the attack suggests that it was executed by a small action team of Maoists. In a statement issued by Superintendent of Police (SP), East Khasi Hills District, one of Police personnel sustained burn injuries and others were injured after their vehicle were attacked with stones and petrol bomb. Following the incident, combing operation were carried out in the areas and broken bottles, one unused petrol bomb and a small quantity of petrol in a plastic bottle were recovered. The incident took place following the meeting between Farmers Association of Lawmei and those opposing Assam vehicles coming to the Lawmei vegetable collection centre and BDO Sohiong and accompanied by OC Lumdiengjri. The BDO had requested for police security in the functioning of collection centre. It was during this interim, the personnel deployed at Lawmei on their way back the police vehicle was attacked.

An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Chhattisgarh Police was suspectedly killed by Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres in Bijapur District of Chhattisgarh on August 31, reports Hindustan Times. ASI Nagaiya Kosa went missing on August 30 evening from Kutru area of the District. Director-General of Police (DGP), Chhattisgarh, DM Awasthi said, “ASI Nagaiya Korsa was abducted and killed by sharp-edged weapons. As per the primary investigations, we think that he was killed by Maoists. His body found along Kutru-Naimed roadside in Bijapur District on Monday.” Sub-Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP), Kutru, received a tip that militia cadres of CPI-Maoist were spotted between Kutru-Naimed road. The DGP further said, “The SDOP, along with his team, rushed to the spot and spotted the ASI’s motorcycle lying along the roadside. Korsa had left for his native village in Awapalli from the police station on Sunday. It primarily appears that the ASI was first abducted by the local militia cadres of CPI (Maoist) and later killed by them.” Meanwhile, District Police have launched a hunt for the Maoists and combing operation in the area is going on.

Two composite teams of SOG and the Kalahandi District Voluntary Force (DVF) initiated an operation in the forest area, during which they were subjected to heavy firing from the other end. While four bodies were found from the forest area after the gunfight, the fifth body was recovered during combing operations. Six weapons, including SLR rifles, barrel rifles and Maoist literature, were recovered from the spot. The identities of the slain Maoists are yet to be ascertained.

A joint patrolling team of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and DRG neutralized the said camp in a forested area between Mariwada and Gongla villages under Gangaloor Police Station limits in the District. The IGP Sundarraj said, on sensing the presence of the patrolling team, Maoists managed to escape into the dense forest abandoning their camp. The explosion took place on Gorna-Mankeli road, where a team of Security Force (SF) personnel along with the BDS of the District Voluntary Force (DVF) was carrying out a demining operation to ensure safety during road construction work. Acting on inputs about the presence of senior cadres of Darbha division committee of Maoists, SFs had launched a major offensive in the forests of Gogunda, Bedma, Nagaram, Pujaripara, Gumodi and Kakadi on December 23. The DRG trooper was injured in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) explosion triggered by the Maoists while a patrolling team was advancing after the gun-battle at Kakadi village of Dantewada District on December 24. “Personnel belonging to DRG, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), its elite CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) unit were involved in the action that concluded on December 25. During the 72-hour long operation, security forces engaged in gunfights with ultras in Gogunda (Sukma) and Kakadi (Dantewada) on December 24 and 25”, said Inspector General of Police (Bastar range) Sundarraj P. adding that “on both the occasions, ultras escaped from their camps.
