The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist)-backed People's Committee against Police Atrocities has called for a 12-hour bandh (general shut down) in three Maoist-affected Districts of Purulia, Bankura and West Midnapore on January 19 (today) to protest against the alleged killing of two of their supporters by joint-security forces. The PCPA vice-president Santosh Patra told PTI over phone that a PCPA supporter Kajal Soren was allegedly shot dead by joint-forces on January 15 and his wife Sabitri Soren was then raped and killed when she went to lodge a protest against the killing. "In protest against this illegal killing and brutal rape and murder, we call for a 12-hour bandh in three districts namely Purulia, Bankura and West Midnapore on Tuesday [January 19]," Patra said. Patra alleged Kajal and Sabitri, residents of Goaltore in Jhargram sub-division of West Midnapore District, were leading a demonstration for the withdrawal of joint-forces from Lalgarh when security men opened fire killing Kajal and injuring five others.

The indefinite shutdown called by the CPI-Maoist-backed People’s Committee against Police Atrocities (PCPA) in three West Bengal Districts against alleged atrocities by the joint Security Forces evoked partial response on the second day on February 3, reports IANS. The Police said that the shutdown had an impact in Jhargram and its peripheral areas of West Midnapore District, Barikul and Ranibandh in Bankura District, but Purulia District remained unaffected. However, schools and colleges functioned normally as educational institutions were kept out of the purview of the shutdown called by the PCPA, which also demanded immediate withdrawal of the joint forces deployed to combat Maoists.

With the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) issuing a fresh 48-hour bandh (general shut down) call starting on June 14, railways decided to run trains at 50 kilometres per hour (KMPH) in Maoist-affected areas and alerted its divisions across five States, reported Times of India. Indian Express adds that as per sources in the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the 48-hour bandh called by Maoists in Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal and Orissa was primarily prompted by the arrest of Maoist leaders Shambhu (Bihar) and Chandrasekhar Gorebale (Karnataka). Apart from this, say sources, the Maoists had also been rattled by other successes by Security Forces recently, including a raid by the Central reserve Police Force in Gaya (Bihar) jungles yielding a large amount of explosives and the destruction of a Maoist camp near the Jharkhand-Orissa border. The SFs have also arrested several Naxal leaders and activists recently.

In a letter to the media, Maoist spokesman Sumon said: “Two of our comrades, Biplab Bandopadhyay and Dhiren Murmu were killed by the joint forces during their operation in Ayodhya Hills in the District on November 12. Biplab was one of our most trusted leaders and spent his whole life for the development of the tribals, and Dhiren was one of our supporters.” “When Dhiren went to collect water from the spring, he was picked up and shot from a close range. Bandopadhyay was also killed in the similar manner. Protesting against the cold blooded and unjustified killing of two of our comrades, we will observe a two-day long bandh in the District November 21 and November 22. We also demand ‘Operation Green Hunt’ should be stopped immediately,” he wrote. “The government in the name of flushing out the Maoists from Purulia, Bankura and West Midnapore is conducting a diabolic operation in the area.
