Apprehending threat to lives from the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), four ex-Maoists surrendered before Police at Bonai in Odisha's Sundargarh District on January 18, reports Business Standard. The four, including two from neighbouring Jharkhand, Johan Munda, Joseph Jarkot, Johan Purti and Sunita Munda were allegedly involved in Maoist violence in the District. "They got disillusioned with the organisation and had decided to leave it. But they became apprehensive about their safety. Three Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, identified as Joseph Munda (35), Sipren Munda (31) and Panalal Bhakta (17), surrendered before Police in Rourkela in Sundargarh District on January 30, reports Odisha Sun Times. Joseph and Sipren are natives of Sanbalichor under K.Balang Police Station, while Panalal is a native of Tirlakuch under Gurundia Police Station in the District. All the three cadres had joined the Maoist organisation in the year 2009. Joseph was involved in a murder case and landmine blast while Sipren and Panalal were also involved in many acts of violence. Panalal also cooked food for party members, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Rourkela Subhash Chandra Jamadar said.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Mitrabhanu Mohapatra said the two Maoists, working in the District as active members of Andhra Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC) since 2007, were involved in more than 15 violent incidents, including anti-landmine blast in Telerai and attack on Border Security Force (BSF) camp at Madhusudan Pally MPV-21 village in the District. Panigrahi and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Assistant commandant Rakesh Sharma in Bonai subdivision in Sundargarh District on April 10, reports Odisha Sun Times. Three cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), including a woman cadre, surrendered in Malkangiri District on April 20, reports The Times of India. The rebels, identified as Irma Kabasi, Era Madkami and Radhika, were carrying a reward of INR 100,000 each on their heads. They are allegedly involved in over 29 cases related to murder, landmine blasts, attacks on Police and other offences, said Malkangiri Superintendent of Police (SP) Mitrabhanu Mohapatra. Kabasi was allegedly involved in the attack on a convoy of Congress leaders at Darbha Valley in Chhattisgarh in 2013, while the other two were active in Kalimela area of Malkangiri, he said.

Three wanted woman Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, identified as Sapai Miniaka alias Tulsi, Talas Wateka alias Geeta and Laxmi Prasska, of Koraput Divisional Committee under Andhra-Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC) surrendered before the Koraput District Police on May 18, reports Indian Express. The three woman cadres were involved in several cases of loot, murder, attack and arson in the bordering areas of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh for past several years. They were in the wanted list of several Police Stations in the District and the State Government had announced a reward of INR 100,000 on each of them. The supporters marched to the Malkangiri District Police Headquarters in a group to surrender before Malkangiri Superintendent of Police (SP) Mitrabhanu Mohapatra. Since August 31, there has been a rise in the number of surrenders by Maoist elements in Malkangiri District. Till now around 758 Maoist supporters including militias from remote Maoist-prone regions of the District have surrendered. However, The New Indian Express puts the surrender figure at 329, including 49 militia commanders and two village committee members. Further, The Pioneer says that as many as 390 Maoist supporters, including 49 militia and two village committee members surrendered.
