A powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED), suspected to be planted by the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), was recovered from Adava Police Station limits of Gajapati District on January 10, reports The Hindu. The bomb in a tiffin box was located near Paniganda forest beat house when the security personnel involved in combing operation in the region came across a suspicious-looking wire protruding from below the ground. Gajapati Superintendent of Police (SP) Satyajit Nayak said this IED contained around 10 kg explosive materials. However, initial evidences hint that the IED may have been planted by the Maoists in 2009.

Security personnel seized several Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) articles during a two-day joint combing operation at Udul under Handapa Police limits in Angul District, reports The New Indian Expresson February 18. Sambalpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Akhileswar Singh said local Police and Sambalpur unit of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and District Voluntary Force (DVF) were conducting a joint combing operation in the areas on Angul-Sambalpur border following information about movement of about 20 Maoists at Badbil under Rairakhol Police Limits on February 14 night. The next evening, security personnel spotted some Maoists near Udul in Angul District and asked them to surrender. Instead, the Maoists opened fire and Security Force (SF) personnel retaliated. The encounter lasted for about 30 minutes before Maoists escaped into the forest under the cover of darkness. Thereafter the security personnel seized an axe, knives, computer keyboard, Maoist literature, four SLR empty cases, medicines, ear phone, torch, cooking utensils and solar panel from the spot. The SP also revealed that a member of ‘Central Committee’ Mishir Besra, who carries a cash award of INR 2.5 million on his head, was believed to be present in the group. Singh hinted that the group was heading towards Kandhamal District.

on February 27,District Voluntary Force (DVF) personnel and Police teams, led by the Rayagada Superintendent of Police (SP), recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition from a camp near Dangamati village in Niyamgiri hills during a combing operation. This is being considered the first successful operation in the region in the last three years and a major success for Odisha Police as Maoists are trying to create a corridor through Rayagada-Kandhamal-Kalahandi districts to connect Chhattisgarh. About 40 members were present in the camp and in the exchange of fire, a middle-aged cadre was killed. Sources said the group was being commanded by Bauri Bandhu Sethi alias Sukhdev alias Bunty who was present at the camp. Bunty heads Bansdhara-Ghumsar Division of CPI-Maoist and operates a group of about 46 cadres.

Border Security Force (BSF) jawans (troopers) during combing operations in Khaipadar forested area near Chitrakonda busted the camp of Maoists and seized four guns and explosives from the camp, Police said. At least three suspected women cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) were killed by the anti-Maoist Special Operation Group (SOG) in an encounter in the Sahajkhaol Reserve Forest in Kalahandi District of Odisha on April 30 afternoon, reports The Indian Express. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Kalahandi, Brijesh Rai said that an exchange of fire ensued between SOG jawans and the Maoists around 5 pm near Kutra village under Ampani police outpost of Kalahandi, when the security personnel were undertaking combing operations in the area. “Our operation team is yet to reach the headquarters. We will reveal identity of the Maoists after their return,” Rai said. The Police said a few .303 rifles and a 9-mm pistol were also recovered.

Security Forces (SFs) busted a Communist Party of IndiaMaoist (CPIMaoist) camp at Kandenjharia under Ghatmal gram panchayat (village level localself government institution) under Sinapali Police limits in Nuapada District on May 5. Earlier in the day, SF personnel exchanged fire with Maoists at Kandenjharia. However, no casualties were reported in the exchange of fire, SFs busted the Maoist camp at the site. Superintendent of Police (SP) Pinak Mishra and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Commandant Mahesh Kumar said that Special Operation Group (SOG), District Voluntary Force (DVF) and CRPF personnel were jointly undertaking combing operation in Kandenjharia area when Maoists opened fire at the SFs from the top of a hill near the village. SFs retaliated with 403 rounds of fire but the Maoists managed to flee the spot. Mishra said there was a group of 30 to 35 Maoists, including women cadres. Two tiffin bombs, seven detonators, two solar plates, three radio sets, uniforms, Maoist kits, utensils besides other materials were recovered from the camp.

According to Police sources, a troupe of paramilitary forces of 143 Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) were involved in combing operation when they stumbled upon these two landmines, planted under a culvert on Jeypore-Lamtaput road near Kadama village. The camp was set up by the Mahanadi Wildlife Division. At least three masked persons came to the camp and went on the rampage. They also detonated a bomb near the camp. "We informed the police about the incident. They are investigating the incident," Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Mahanadi Wildlife Division (Nayagarh), AP Das said. Police said it might be the handiwork of the extremists as the area is Maoist-affected. "A massive combing operation has been launched in the area," said Superintendent of Police (SP) (Nayagarh) KV Singh. Maoists have been opposing the wildlife division's plan to evacuate people from the sanctuary area to set up anti-poaching camps, sources said. There are two wildlife sanctuaries near the place of the incident - Baisipali and Satakosia Gorge. Police also detected a Maoist poster from the area. The Maoists strongly opposed the evacuation plan in the poster.

Acting on intelligence inputs that armed Maoists were hiding in the nearby forested area, personnel of Special Operations Group (SOG) and District Voluntary Force (DVF), conducted a combing operation in Panasput forest under Hatibari panchayat late on September 17, night, and have seized two walkie-talkie sets, huge quantities of explosives including detonators, medicines and Maoist literature, informed Superintendent of Police (SP) of Koraput, Charan Singh Meena. There was an exchange of fire between the Maoists and SFs for over half an hour, however, the rebels managed to escape taking advantage of the dense forest and hills, he added. The rebels belonged to Andhra-Odisha Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC)’s Koraput division of the CPI-Maoist, Meena said.

Eighteen Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres were killed in an encounter with a combined team of Andhra Pradesh (AP) and Odisha Police near Jantri in Malkangiri District of Odisha, in the Andhra-Odisha Border (AOB) area, in the early hours on October 24 (today), reports The Times of India. According to AP Police, two constables of Greyhounds, an elite anti-Maoist force, were injured in the encounter that occurred during a routine combing operation being jointly carried out by Police of both the States at Ramgurha in Malkangiri District of Odisha. "The operation spot comes under Chitrakonda police limits of Malkangiri. The joint operation was carried out in cut-off areas of Chitrakonda close to Andhra Pradesh border. We seized some weapons from the Maoists," Additional Director General (ADG), (intelligence) of Odisha Arun Sarangi told TOI. Sarangi said the blueprint of the operation was finalized two days ago. "We had tip-off about movement of the Maoists in the cut-off area. We informed the Andhra Pradesh police for assistance," Sarangi said, adding "The bodies will be brought to Chitrakonda for identification and post-mortem." The face-off between the Security Force (SF) personnel and the Maoists lasted for about an hour. The rebels were said to be resting after a meeting when the encounter took place. Police have recovered four AK-47 rifles from the scene of the encounter. AP Director General of Andhra Police Nanduri Sambasiva Rao said combing operation was still continuing as there was information that there were some more Maoists roaming in the region. Sources said that top Maoist leaders like Gajarla Ravi alias Uday, Bengal Sudhir, Anil, RK alias Saketh's son Munna, Bakuri Venkata Ramana alias Ganesh and others were in the area at the time of the encounter.

The total number Maoists killed in the joint Police operation rose to 27. One AP Greyhound commando Mohammed Abu Bakar was also killed in the exchange of fire while one more commando was also injured. According to Visakhapatnam, Superintendent of Police (SP) (rural), Rahul Dev Sharma, the search operations are still on and the death toll may rise further. The Police had seized 20 firearms, which includes four AK47 rifles, 10 numbers of .303 rifles, three SelfLoading Rifle (SLR) rifles, two INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) rifle, four SBBL (Smooth Bore Breech Loading) guns, one laptop and INR 216,000 from the spot. By late evening, the police party recovered about 50 kit bags and a large quantity of Maoist literature. There were between 50 to 60 Maoists, when the encounter took place. Two more Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) were shot dead in the Chitrakonda forest area of Malkangiri District on October 27, taking the rebel toll to 30 in the third encounter in as many days, reports New Indian Express. The Security Force (SF) personnel ran into a group of Maoists in the dense forest of Chitrakonda during the ongoing combing operations and warned the latter to surrender. However, the rebels opened fire in a bid to escape, Visakhapatnam (rural) Superintendent of Police (SP) Rahul Dev Sharma said. The exchange of fire continued for about 20 minutes. When the guns fell silent, the Police found two bodies. “Their photos would be released shortly. The police are willing to help injured Maoists get medical treatment if they are willing to surrender,” Sharma said.
