the Maoists set ablaze three mobile communication towers in Baragada area of Ganjam District on the first day of the two-day bandh (shut down strike) called by the Maoists in the State from January 4, reports The Hindu. According to Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Binay Kamila, the Maoists set ablaze two mobile communication towers at Goudagotha village and another at Barada village, located near Ganjam-Gajapati-Kandhamal border where Maoists are trying to increase their hold. The Maoists also pasted posters asking people to make the bandh a success and to protest anti-Maoist operations. The Maoists also threatened the company officials and staff of the Vedanta Alumina Refinery to immediately give up their jobs and leave the area, adds The Pioneer.

Three constables of the Orissa Police were killed and as many injured when Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres triggered a landmine blast at Badarpanga village in the Kotagarh area in Kandhamal District in the morning of January 5, reports Indian Express. The landmine went off when the team with two trained dogs was proceeding in a vehicle on Kotagarh-Srirampur road to the site of the blast that had taken place on January 4 in the area, State Home Secretary UN Behera told reporters, adds DNA. The blast came on the second day of the two-day bandh (shut down strike) called by the Maoists to protest the recent Police arrests and attacks on Maoists during Operation Saranda to flush them out of the forests on the Odisha-Jharkhand border. The deceased are identified as Sunasir Mohanty, Umakant Jani and Sangram Lenka. The three injured were identified as Noha Panda, Basanta Behera and Padmanav Dehuri.

Kandhamal District observed a bandh (shut down strike) on January 6 to register its protest against Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) violence and as a mark of homage to the three Policemen, who died in the landmine blast on January 5, reports The Times of India. Several towns of Kandhamal, including Raikia, G Udayagiri, Khajuripada and Baliguda joined the bandh, with traders downing their shutters. Schools and colleges were closed for the day as well.

Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) reportedly called a two-day bandh (shutdown strike) on February 16-17, in protest against recent arrest of their three cadres, including two from Chhattisgarh, causing little response in Ganjam District. Vehicular traffic was disrupted in Maoist-hit areas in Kandhamal District, on the first day of the two-day bandh in both Ganjam and Kandhamal Districts. Vehicles were off the roads in Daringibadi, Brahmanigaon and Kotagarh areas in Kandhamal District and shops and business establishments also downed shutters in response to the bandh call. Government offices, educational institutions, however, were running as usual, said an unnamed Police officer. There was no response to the bandh in Ganjam District, the Police said.

Zee News reports that normal life was partially hit in Vizianagaram District on April 29 the first day of two-day bandh (shutdown strike), April 29-30, called by the Korukonda area committee of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in the Andhra-Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC) area. The committee had given a call for the bandh demanding suspension of the Operation Green Hunt. RTC buses remained off the road in Maoist-infested areas like GK Veedhi, Paderu, Munchingput, Chintapalli, G Madugula and Koyyuru in Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and parts of Koraput and Malkangiri Districts in Odisha. Transport services were suspended during night and all the shops and private offices remained closed. The bandh had no impact in Vizianagaram and Srikakulam Districts. Paderu was the worst-affected as the area observed bandh on April 27 and April 28 also.

Vehicular traffic was partially affected in Maoist-affected Districts of south Odisha. But its impact was hardly seen on normal life except a few pockets. As a precautionary measure the Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) suspended its bus services in the Maoist-affected areas.

The bandh (shutdown strike) call given by the Andhra-Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC) of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) had its impact only in a few pockets of Malkangiri and Koraput Districts on May 30, reports The Hindu. According to the Police, no untoward incident was reported from any area till afternoon. In Malkangiri District there was no impact of the bandh at the District headquarters town. Bandh affected normal life in some extreme remote Maoist-affected pockets of the District such as Kalimela, Motu, Padia, Malkangiri Village (MV-79), Chitrakonda, Vejangwada, and Gumphakonda areas. Small passenger vehicle operators did not dare to come out on roads in these areas. Shops remained closed in Padia, Motu, Chitrakonda, and Gumphakonda areas.

Normal life was affected in Narayanpatna area of Koraput District and Kalyansinghpur area of Rayagada District as the Maoists felled trees on roads at some places. The Kashipur-Niyamgiri area committee of the CPI-Maoist has circulated posters and banners in areas considered as their stronghold, appealing to people to oppose the Union Government's economic policy.

While Sabyasachi Panda, Chief of Odisha Maobadi Party (OMP), called for state-wide bandh, the Bansadhara Division of the CPI-Maoist called for bandh in four Southern Districts of Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal and Rayagada to protest against the November 14 encounter. On November 18, Panda in an audio tape message had said "The deceased were innocent villagers. Security persons had killed them in the name of Maoists".
