A goods train was also derailed in the incident. The CPI-Maoist had called for a 24-hour bandh (general shut down) in Palamau commissionary on January 5 to protest against the alleged custody death of Rajendra Yadav, a resident of Tiladi village in Chattarpur. The bandh affected life in three districts— Latehar, Garhwa and Palamau.

Six Police personnel and a civilian were killed and one Policeman went missing when the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres blew up their vehicle in the Gumla District on January 15, reported Times of India. The Maoists ambushed a truck, in which the Policemen were on patrol, by triggering a blast near Gurdari mines when the vehicle was returning to Bishunpur Police Station, Inspector General of Police V. D. Desmukh said. Assistant Sub-Inspector Shaym Kumar Sinha and the truck driver were among those killed, he said. The others included havildars and constables, he said, adding, one Policeman was missing.

Indo-Asian News Service quoted Amrendra Das, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Dhanbad railway division, saying, “Maoist rebels blew up railway tracks at two places which come under Coal Indian Cord (CIC) sections. In the first incident, Maoist rebels blew up a railway track near east cabin of Parasnath railway station. In the blast, six meters of the track was damaged. In the second incident, Maoists blew up railway tracks between Chaudharybandh and Karmabad railway stations of the same district.”

The deceased was identified as Satyendra Yadav, brother of CPI-Maoist ‘sub-zonal commander’ Anirudih Yadav, who had been killed in Palamau in 2009. The injured Maoist was identified as Upendra Yadav. Times of India reports five Police personnel were killed and five others injured when cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) triggered a landmine blast blowing up a patrol van carrying Jharkhand Jaguar Force personnel at Kutmu More in Latehar District on July 16. The patrol van was following the car of the Superintendent of Police (SP) who was returning after leading a long range patrolling in Maoist-affected areas. The SP had a providential escape as his vehicle had just passed the blast site few moments earlier. "I was the target of the Maoists, but the landmine went off moments after my car passed the path at Kutmu More," Kuldip Diwedi, the SP, told reporters soon after reaching the headquarters. The dead Police personnel were identified as Ashok Kumar, Mohan Niraj, Duduwa Munda, Gopal Lakra and Prakash Yadav, the Police said, adding that the van was badly damaged in the explosion.
