A joint team of District Police and Central Reserve Police Force’s (CRPF’s) 60 battalion destroyed a camp of People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and arrested a cadre in Sinko forests under Bandhgaon Police Station limits in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand on January 18, reports The Times of India. As per the report, on receiving a tip off about the presence of the PLFI cadres in the said forest, the Security Forces (SFs) had launched an anti-Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] operation. As soon as the SFs reached the forest, cadres of PLFI fired shots at them leading to an exchange of fire. "The exchange of fire lasted for about 20 minutes, resulting in the extremists fleeing from their camp. We have arrested a rebel and our interrogation is on to ascertain his identity and his involvement in extremist activities," said the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Pranav Anand adding that SFs recovered a 9mm pistol, a single barrel gun and a few cartridges, besides items of daily use from the PLFI camp.

An exchange of fire took place between cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) and Security Forces (SFs) at Rajderwa forest area in Jhumra village under Chatrochati Police Station limits in Bokaro District of Jharkhand on February 2, reports The Pioneer. As per the report, on receiving a tip-off that a squad including women cadres of Maoist ‘commander’ Santosh Mahto alias Mithlesh Singh alias Durvodhan Mahto was camping in the area, the Bokaro Police along with the 26th battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) conducted a search operation. On seeing the SFs, the Maoists opened fire leading to a gun-battle in which a trooper of the CRPF, identified as Subodh Kumar, received bullet injuries, adds Indiablooms.

A Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre was killed in an exchange of fire with Security Forces (SFs) at Kaththokwa forest under Bishunpur Police Station limits in Gumla District of Jharkhand on March 31, reports United News of India. As per the report, on receiving input about the presence of some members of Rabindra Ganjhu Squad of CPI-Maoist in the said forest, the Police initiated a patrolling. According to Superintendent of Police (SP), Anjani Kumar Jha, the Maoists opened fire at the Police team leading to a gun-battle in which a Maoist was killed whose identity is yet to be ascertained. Also, the Police recovered arms and ammunition from the incident spot and a search operation is underway, the SP added.

Three women Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist)cadres were killed in an encounter between Maoists and Security Forces (SFs) at Chirung village under Gudri Police Station area in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand on April 4, reports The Pioneer.West Singhbhum Superintendent of Police (SP), Indrajeet Mahatha said, "During the operation there were jawans (troopers) of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)'s 170 and 60 battalions posted in West Singhbhum and 94 battalion from the adjoining Khunti district beside the district police jawans.The personnel rushed to the Chirung village by maintaining social distancing and encircled the village where about 25 rebels were holding meeting with the villagers. But as the police and para-military forces reached, the rebels started firing at the troops. After an initial exchange of fire from both the sides for about an hour, the naxals [Left Wing Extremists, LWEs] started backtracking and finally fled the scene." After the rebels fled the scene, the SFs carried out a search operation and found the bullet-ridden bodies of three women Maoists,beside those bodies were lying three rifles."During the search, we found over 500 rounds of bullets, arrow bombs, two IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices), medicines, naxal literature from the scene, suggesting that the rebels belonging to Suresh Munda squad of the CPI-Maoist were at the Chirung village for motivating the villagers for joining the naxalism," SP, Mahatha pointed out.Intelligence sources maintained that the Naxalshave once again started influencing the local residents to come to the fold of the naxalism, said a senior intelligence officer. He said the rebels are targeting areas in Sonua, Goelkera and Porahat region of West Singhbhum.

The Security Forces (SFs) recovered two Improvised Explosive Device (IED)-fitted arrows and two can-bombs after an exchange of firewith Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) in a forested area of Kedabir under Sonuwa Police Station limits in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand on April 9, reports Outlook India. According to the Superintendent of Police (SP) Inderjit Mahata, on receiving information about the presence of the Maoist squad led by Lodaro Lohar in the said forest, the personnel comprising the jawans (troopers) of District Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) surrounded the area. The Maoists began indiscriminate firing after they sighted the SFs and a gun-battle ensued. No casualty was reported in the encounter as the Maoists retreated into the forest leaving behind the explosives.

The Superintendent of Police (SP), Sujata Kumari Veenapani, said, following a tip-off about the presence of at least 20 to 25 rebels, including women Maoist contingents of Mithlesh Mahto alias Duryodhan’s squad in the said area, the SFs launched a combing operation. On seeing the SFs, the Maoists opened fire leading to a gun-battle. Although the Maoists escaped the spot, taking advantage of forested and hilly terrain, the SFs recovered some Naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE]-related items from the spot.

A cadre of People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) was killed while another was injured in an exchange of fire with Security Forces (SFs) in a forested area near Benduchuan village under Jaldega Police Station limits in Simdega District of Jharkhand on May 17, reports The New Indian Express. As per the report, the incident took place when a team of Special Task Force (STF) was out on a search operation following an input that a group of PLFI cadres have been spotted in the area. The Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjeev Kumar said, “One PLFI cadre has been gunned down by the STF while another member of the group, who claims himself as Area Commander of Bano area in Simdega, Praveen Kandulna, has received serious bullet injuries and has been rushed to the hospital.” The Police officials informed that five cadres have also been arrested and huge caches of arms and ammunition including one AK-47, four rifles, one county made pistol along with a huge number of live cartridges have also been recovered from their possession. The Identity of the slain Maoist is yet to be ascertained.

A ‘sub-zonal commander’ of the Tritiya Sammelan Prastuti Committee (TSPC) identified as Nanku Ganjhu, was arrested along with an AK-47 rifle, 130 cartridges and two magazines from a forested area near Hossir village under Lawalong Police Station limits in Chatra District of Jharkhand on May 20, reports The Times of India. As per the report, Ganjhu had at least 10 cases registered against him in Latehar, Chatra and Palamu Districts. Giving details about the exchange of fire, the Superintendent of Police (SP) Rishav Jha said, “Police received a tip-off that some members of the group, led by Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) zonal commander Paramjit, have escaped to Tikulia and Hossir villages after an exchange of fire with the Police on May 18 in a forest near Hossir. A joint team of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the State Police, led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Bachandeo Kujur, carried out search operations for two days in the area. Eventually, Ganjhu was arrested.” The SP also added that on May 18, Paramjit’s squad was involved in another encounter with a separate joint team of security forces, comprising the District Police of Chatra and Latehar and the Jharkhand Jaguar. “His squad was also involved in arson under the Lawalong and the Panki Police Station limits in the recent past,” Jha said.

The slain cadres were identified as - Patras (40), Dadu Nag (30) alias Champa da, and his 26-year-old wife whose identity is yet to be ascertained. The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Rajiv Ranjan Singh said, “Acting on a tip-off the Police and Paramilitary Forces launched a search operation at the valley at dawn and as the forces were advancing, the PLFI rebels opened fire at them. Soon the SFs replied the shots leading to a gun-battle. After the guns fell silent, the SFs started a combing operation during which they found three bullet-ridden bodies and one AK-47 rifle, live cartridges, explosives, and Naxal literature were from the spot.” The DIG further added that “An unidentified cadre who sustained injuries in the gunfight has been admitted to the government hospital in Chakradharpur while a fifth rebel, identified as Manoj, has been arrested.”

Giridih SP, S K Jha said, “A hardcore Maoist Rakesh Marandi was nabbed (arrested). He was a member of a squad active in the bordering areas of Bihar and Giridih district. During interrogation, Marandi confessed to his involvement in attacking workers at a bridge-construction site in Baghmari and Chirudih under Bhelwaghat police station on April 27.” SP Jha further said, “The naxal [Left Wing Extremism, LWE] hideout was busted at the foothills of Parasnath under Nimyaghat police station. The Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres exchanged fire with Security Forces (SFs) following the recovery of 60 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) from two separate locations under Goilkera Police Station limits in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand on June 12, reports The Times of India. The first recovery was made after teams comprising District Police, Jharkhand Jaguar (JJ) and a Battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) stumbled upon a codex wire planted along the Kuida-Hatiburu road during a patrol. Upon digging out the area, 40 live IEDs, including can bombs and cooker bombs, planted in a series circuit, were recovered. The second recovery of 20 IEDs were made from Merelgora area in the District. While the SFs were busy removing the bombs, Maoists opened fire, resulting in retaliatory fire from the SFs, following which the rebels retreated. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Indrajeet Mahatha said the search operation in the area was launched earlier in the day on a tip-off about the movement by Maoists in the forest cover of Goilkera and Sonua Police station areas.
