The Maoists also fired indiscriminately after triggering the explosion.According to Police, the landmine was exploded when a group of women had gone into the forest to fetch fire-wood.When Security Forces (SFs) reached the spot after being informed about the incident, a gun-battle took place with the Maoists, following which the rebels escaped into the dense forests.

A Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) jawan(trooper) and at least two cadres of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) were injured during an encounter on Toklo hills at the Jamro axis in West Singhbhum District of Jharkhand on February 7, reports Hindustan Times. “A CoBRA jawan has been injured while 2-3 Maoist extremists have also been hit in the encounter at Toklo hills of West Singhbhum district this morning. The injured jawan has been airlifted to Ranchi for appropriate medical care. The encounter happened on the border at West Singhbhum-Saraikela-Kharsawan-Khunti triangle. The search operation is still on and more details are awaited,” Ajay Linda, West Singhbhum,Superintendent of Police (SP), said. The injured CoBRA jawan has been identified as Narayan Chetri from Assam. “Narayan Chetri is now out of danger. The joint forces of district police, CRPF and CoBRA battalions have inflicted heavy damages on the Maoists. 2-3 Naxals [Left Wing Extremists, LWEs] have sustained bullet injuries and search is on to trace them. We have also seized pipe bombs, land mines, IEDs, several rounds of ammunition and rucksacks,” Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Kolhan,Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP), said.Police said a Maoist squad led by Toofan alias Patiram Majhi (Giridih), who has a bounty of INR 10 million on his head, and ‘area commander’ Maharaj Pramanik, who has a reward of INR 1 million on his head, opened fired on the Security Forces (SFs) when they were on a search operation. Stating that the operation was still on and would not stop until the Maoist squads active in the three districts of Kolhan are neutralised, the DIGP, Singh, said, “We will not spare anyone and will not stop before wiping out the Naxals completely. The developmental works for the people have been greatly hampered by these naxals and their subversive activities. They better surrender or be ready to be neutralized.”

No casualty was reported from either side in the incident. “As the Police and Paramilitary Forces were carrying out a special operation against the rebels in the jungle, the rebels had started raining shots at the forces at about 11.30 am. The Paramilitary Forces had also retaliated by firing shots. The encounter lasted for over an hour, causing the Maoists to give a retreat as the Paramilitary Forces had overpowered them. There is no casualty on the side of the paramilitary forces, but whether the Naxals had any casualty or not is yet to be ascertained,” Superintendent of Police (SP), Mohammed Arshi said.

Acting on a tip-off about the presence of a Maoist camp, a joint team of Jharkhand Police and CRPF launched a combing operation in the area. On spotting the Security Forces (SFs), a group of around 50 Maoists opened fire, sparking off a gun-battle during which the CRPF troopers received serious bullet injuries.

A self-styled ‘area commander’ of the Jharkhand Janamukti Parishad (JJMP), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), was killed in an encounter with the Police at Chorhat under Ramgarh Police Station area in Palamu District of Jharkhand on February 24, reports Devdiscourse. Policemen were on a routine patrol when members of the outfit started firing on them to which the Police personnel retaliated the fire and in the ensuing gun battle, in which one of the extremists was killed. The slain rebel was later identified as Mahesh Bhuiyan, the JJMP's self-styled ‘area commander’, Police said.

An exchange of fire took place between Tritiya Prastuti Committee (TPC), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres and Police personnel including Jharkhand Jaguar personnel in Jiruhala forest of Rajguru village in Balumath Police Station limits of Latehar District in Jharkhand on April 18, reports Prabhat Khabar. Security Forces (SFs) were conducting the search operations in the area after a tip-off received by the Latehar Superintendent of Police (SP), TPC cadres started firing at the Police personnel and managed to escape by taking advantage of the darkness. The SFs recovered a loaded 7.62 mm Self Loading Rifle (SLR) and four live cartridges and a desi 315 bore loaded rifle, which included three cartridges along with the magazine, as well as two sticky uniforms and two empty magazines of INSAS (Indian Small Arms System) assault rifle. TPC Regional Commander Aarak ji alias Ravindra Bhairav Ganju alias Bhaskar alias Pradeep Ganju alias Prabhat ji were planning to carry out a major incident with their 15-16 TPC militant squad, said Balumath Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), Ajit Kumar.

People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadre identified as Ram Bhengra was arrested after an encounter at Digri Jhariatoli locality under Rania Police Station of Khunti District in Jharkhand on May 18, reports The Pioneer. Ram Bhengra, a native of Kulap village and Security Forces (SFs) recovered two country-made fire weapons, two live bullets, five bikes, three mobile phones, two backpacks and some daily utility items after the exchange of fire. The encounter continued for around two hours when PLFI cadres opened fire on SFs. Police opened around 20 rounds of fire on PLFI cadres. No casualty or injury was reported during the encounter. SFs comprising of Khunti Police and 94th battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were jointly carrying out an anti- Naxal [Left Wing Extremism (LWE)] operation on getting intelligence inputs that PLFI cadres are planning some attacks in the forest area bordering Khunti and Gumla Districts of Jharkhand. The intelligence inputs further confirmed that PLFI ‘area commander’ John Topno along with his armed squad is moving in the bordering area. Some other members of that armed group were identified as Nakul Singh, Bishram Kongari and Wilcon. Topno was along with a dozen PLFI and they decamped in the forest area except Bhengra who was arrested. PLFI cadres have fled taking advantage of the forested areas after seeing the Police getting heavier in the encounter. Several rounds of firing were reported from both sides. Several weapons, including an AK-47 rifle, were recovered from the encounter site, Police said. Sources said a Jharkhand Jaguar team was on a search operation in Saliya forest area, around 10 kilometres from Latehar District Police headquarters, when the JJMP extremists opened fire on them. During the two-hour gunfight, a Maoist was killed and Deputy Commandant Rajesh Kumar sustained bullet injuries, they said. Kumar was taken to Latehar and then airlifted to Ranchi for treatment. He died at hospital in the course of treatment, a press release issued by Jharkhand Police said. The identity of the slain JJMP cadre is yet to be ascertained.

Security Force (SF) personnel averted an attack on a Police camp by armed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres at Kochang Block (administrative sub-division) in Khunti District of Jharkhand in the early hours of November 22, The Telegraph. Khunti Superintendent of Police (SP), Ashutosh Shekhar said about five to six armed rebels tried to enter a Police camp at Kochang after November 21 midnight to paste a CPI-Maoist poster threatening bandh (general shut down strike). The rebels opened fire after being stopped by Police, and the Police had to retaliate with counter-firing, the SP added. “They (rebels) fled the spot after getting overpowered by our men. No casualties were reported during the encounter. Combing operations are being carried out across the district,” said SP Shekhar, adding that at least 100 rounds were fired during the encounter. Police sources said the rebels were armed with modern guns, but they had to retreat as they were outnumbered by security personnel. Security has been beefed up at Police camps and potential targets of the rebels in Khunti and other Left Wing Extremism (LWE)-affected Districts following the encounter.

There is no report of any casualty in this encounter. Superintendent of Police (SP), Ehtesham Waqarib said that information about firing has been received, adds bhaskar.com. After getting information about the incident, Chainpur and Kurumgarh Police have taken over the investigation. A search operation was launched in the forest adjacent to Kurumgarh Police Station. So far, the Police have not come face to face with the Maoists. About two weeks ago, the Maoists blew up the under-construction Police Station in Kurumgarh. During the attack, the working laborers were driven out from there, after which the construction work of Kurumgarh Police Station has not started till now. In the incident of bombing of the under-construction Police Station located in Kurumgarh, the Maoists team coming to Gumla while traveling continuously from Latehar and Lohardaga, and the Police had got information that the Maoists from Lohardaga and Latehar had reached Gumla.
