As many as 44 Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres including nine women cadres surrendered before Police in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh on January 1, reports timesnownews.com. Sukma Superintendent of Police (SP), Sunil Sharma said, the rebels, mostly lower-rung cadres who were active in Chintalnar, Kishtaram and Bheji areas of the district, turned themselves in at the newly-set up Police camp in Karigundam village. One of them, Madkam Dula, a member of CPI-Maoist platoon no. 4, was carrying a reward of INR 200,000 on his head. Others were members of CPI-Maoist's militia or the Chetna Natya Mandli (CNM), a cultural wing of Maoists, SP, Sharma said, adding the surrendered cadres said they were disappointed with the "hollow" Maoist ideology and "impressed" by the district Police's rehabilitation drive for Naxals [Left Wing Extremists, LWEs], called 'Puna Narkom'. Puna Narkom, a Gondi word, means a new dawn.

Nineteen Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, including four women cadres, surrendered at Bhejji Police Station in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh on February 27, reports devdiscourse.com. The Maoists, three of them carrying cash rewards of INR 100,000 each on their heads, turned themselves in before Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officials at Bhejji Police Station in the district on February 27 evening, citing disappointment with the "inhuman" and "hollow" Maoist ideology. All the rebels, whose identities are yet to be ascertained, hailed from Bodhrajpadar village in Bhejji area and were active as lower rung cadres of the CPI-Maoist. A senior official said the Maoists who laid down their arms were also "impressed" by the district Police's rehabilitation drive for Naxals [Left Wing Extremism, LWE], called 'Puna Narkom' (a term coined in local Gondi dialect which means New Dawn, New Beginning).

Six Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres surrendered in Sukma District of Chhattisgarh on March 15, as part of the police’s ‘Puna Narkom’ campaign to get Maoists back into the mainstream, reports The Print. Sukma, Superintendent of Police (SP), Sunil Sharma, identified the six surrendered Maoists as Kartam Kosa, Sodi Lakhma, Kawasi Deva, Kawasi Manga, Padam Somdu and Mandvi Ganga, all lower rungs functionaries of the CPI-Maoist. The SP informed, “They have laid down arms citing disappointment with the Maoist ideology and also due to our campaign called Puna Narkom (which means new dawn in the local Gondi dialect). Ganga has cases under IPC [Indian Penal Code] and Arms Act provisions, while others have also taken part in incidents of violence.”

The ‘militia members’ who surrendered include Sodi Kosa, Vetti Hadma, Madvi Ayta, Oyam Joga, Vetti Hunga, Vetti Bhima, Madkam Handa, Sodi Hunga, Sodi Bhima, Vetti Devi, Veko Deva, Vetti Ganga, Sodi Hidma, Vetti Joga, Vetti Bheem, Vetti Nande, Vetti Muye, Vetti Deve, Kiche Bheem, Kiche Rame, Madvi Hungi, Sodi Somdi, Sodi Somdi and Vetti Masse. All the surrendered members are residents of Potkapalli village under Kistaram Thana (Police Post), in Sukma District. The Maoists who returned to the mainstream were identified as Muchaki Sopda alias Nirmal, Muchaki Somdi alias Somey – both carried bounties of INR 300,000 each – Madwi Mudra and Podiyam Ramesh, both carried bounties of INR 200,000 each. Superintendent of Police (SP), Sunil Sharma disbursed incentive of INR 10,000 each and assured that the four cadres would benefit under the government’s rehabilitation policy ‘Poona Narkom’ (New Morning-New Beginning) campaign. Two Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres identified as Madkam Jitendra alias Sanna and Gadpa Nagesh, involved in several incidents of violence and carrying a collective reward of INR 300,000 on their heads surrendered in Sukma District Chhattisgarh on May 6, reports Telangana Today. Sukma Superintendent of Police (SP), Sunil Sharma said, Madkam was the Maoists’ Military Platoon No-30 member under the Kerlapal Area Committee of the CPI-Maoist and carried a reward of INR 200,000 on his head. Gadpa was the Dandakaranya Adivasi Kisan Mazdoor Sangthan’s (DAKMS) Bodkel Panchayat (village level local self-Government institution) ‘president’, the officer said, adding that he carried a bounty of INR 100,000 on his head. The duos were involved in firing at Police personnel, planting Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and several Maoist violence incidents, he added.

Hidma was active for 16 years and Hungi for 12 in Bastar of Kerlapal Area Committee and transferred to KKBN division in Odisha last year. Hidma was involved in the Burkapal (Sukma) Maoist ambush in 2017, in which 25 security personnel were killed, and planting IED to target security forces in Palodipara (Basebatti) in 2019. Allegedly, Dudhi Bheema, who was part of the outlawed group’s “battalion no. 1”, turned himself in before Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Police officials citing disappointment with the “inhuman” and “hollow” Maoist ideology, Sukma, Superintendent of Police (SP), Sunil Sharma said, adding, “The Naxalite [Left Wing Extremist, LWE] had come in contact with personnel belonging to CRPF’s Range Field Team (RFT), which played a crucial role in convincing him to join the mainstream and lead a normal life. He is a native of Chintagufa area of Sukma and was associated with the outlawed Communist Party of India (Maoist) for the past seven years.” Bheema was allegedly involved in the deadly Minpa attack in March 2020 in which 17 security personnel lost their lives. He carried a reward of INR 800,000 on his head.
