The Border Security Force (BSF) in the evening of January 12 fired few shots at forward village of Bakarpur near Octroi post on the International Border in RS Pura sector of Jammu District after observing suspicious movement across the border, reports Daily Excelsior. Official sources said the BSF fired about 20 shots for about 10 minutes after noticing some movement on the Pakistan side and taking it as an infiltration attempt. The BSF later conducted a search operation in the area but didn’t find any bodies. Sources said the intruder(s) trying to enter into this side managed to escape back after firing by the BSF personnel. The infiltration attempt was reportedly made from Pakistan’s forward area of Uchey Bhains.

In another search operation at Thanna Mandi, the SFs recovered two Chinese pistols with two magazines and 10 rounds, three shells, 14 PIKA rounds, 245 AK-47 rounds, two hand grenades, two AK-47 magazines, one solar light plate, two Nokia mobile handsets, one stove, one medicine packet and one mobile telephone charger.

Official sources said the SFs launched the operation following inputs about the presence of three militants there. The militants being searched included Aamir Ali Kamal alias Akram, Junaid Akram Malik alias and Shakir Hussain Sheikh alias Chota Hafiz, all residents of Kishtwar.

Security Forces (SFs) trapped three militants belonging to Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) by cordoning off the village after a brief encounter, 8 kilometres from Pulwama town on February 3. A huge cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from Safapora-Kralgund forest range in Handwara area of Kupwara District on April 29, reports Daily Excelsior. "The recoveries included a Chinese Pistol, four under barrel grenade launchers (UBGL), two Pistol Magazines, two PIKA magazines, two Improvised Explosive Device (IED) standard boxes, three radio sets with Antenna, two Circuit IEDs, nine rounds of PIKA gun, 210 rounds of AK-47 rifle and a Pouch," said Police officials. "The forest range of Handwara in Kupwara has seen some of the bloodiest encounters and recently there were at least two major encounters in which around 10 militants were killed. Since the militants are on run we suspect that they have left behind the arms and ammunition. A manhunt has been launched to arrest the militants and we are hopeful that the operation would be successful very soon," added the Police. No arrests were made so far.

SFs have once again stepped up searches for three most wanted militants in Kishtwar District, who remained elusive even after more than seven months of being declared as wanted in a powerful blast outside Delhi High Court on September 7, 2011. The three militants, identified as Shakeer Ahmed alias Chotta Haafiz, Aamir Kamal alias Kamran and Junaid Akram Malik, all residents of Kishtwar, are wanted by the National Investigating Agency (NIA) and carry head money of INR 1 million each. Another militant, Mohammad Shaffi, who was being searched in upper reaches of Kishtwar though not being involved in Delhi blast, was reportedly accompanying the wanted trio, sources said. As reported earlier, three militants from Kishtwar have already been arrested by the NIA and Kishtwar Police in connection with Delhi blast. However, sources said, the three militants of Kishtwar and two Pakistanis still remained untraced. While three Kishtwar militants were involved in conspiracy, the Pakistanis had transport and planted explosive device triggering blast on the morning of September 7, 2011.

A group of unidentified militants raided a Police post guarding residential houses of Pandit families in Padgachoo village in Shopian District and snatched two service rifles of Policemen deployed on guard duty there. Security Forces (SFs) on May 10 killed six militants and foiled a major infiltration bid near the Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector of Baramulla District, reports Daily Excelsior. Defence spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel JS Brar said that Army along the LoC in Maidan Nala area of Uri sector observed movement of five to six militants trying to infiltrate into Uri in the night of May 9. The troops laid an ambush around them and they were asked to surrender. "On being asked to surrender, the infiltrators opened heavy fire on our troops and the troops retaliated resulting in the killing of five militants", the spokesman added. He said that bodies of four militants' along with four AK rifles besides other ammunition have been recovered by the Army during the search operations. The body of the fifth militant is yet to be recovered as the area of operation is in very close proximity to the LoC, he added. The Defence spokesman said that identity of the infiltrators was yet to be established.

Defence spokesman said that on information regarding movement of two to three militants in the Aloosa area of Halmatpura, surveillance cum ambush was launched in Ashtiung Nar. The spokesman said that the ambush party noticed suspicious movement in the area. "On being challenged, the ambush party of 27 Rashtriya Rifles was fired upon. A brief fire fight ensued. Later during the search of the area, one body and AK-47 along with ammunition were recovered. The body and the recovered arms and ammunition have been handed over to the Police", the spokesman added. Soon after the news spread about the killing, hundreds of people took to streets and protested against the killing. As reported earlier, the search operation started in the morning of August 31 after Security Forces (SFs) cordoned off a vast area of Chattergul forests in Kangan following information about the presence of militants in the area. “Initially the joint party of forces killed an unidentified militant inside a hideout in the forest. In the hideout we found some pairs of shoes and other logistics that included gas cylinders, blankets and ration. Recovery of shoes and logistics indicated some more militants are present in the area and we extended the operation,” an unnamed Police officer supervising the operation said, adding that on September 2 one more militant was killed. “We cannot say how many more militants are present in the area but the operation to flush out militants, if any, is going on in full swing,” he added. The Police officer said that militants can escape and cross over to Bandipora and Gurez. “The police and other agencies in that area have also been alerted,” he said further. Army’s Srinagar based spokesman said that Army has no plans to call off the operation.

Army on September 21, killed one Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant in the operation that was launched on September 15, in the forests of Uri area of Baramulla District after the movement of a group of militants was noticed, reports Daily Excelsior. Army said that they killed a militant who was injured in the encounter last week, when one militant was killed. Arms and ammunition was also recovered from the killed militant. Army sources further said at least 3-4 militants of LeT who had managed to infiltrate through Kamalkote sector of Uri on September 2 are trapped in these forests and couple of them are still alive.

A top Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) ‘commander’ was among two militants killed in an encounter in Handwara forests of Kupwara District on September 25, reports Daily Excelsior. An Army trooper was killed, while two Army troopers, including an officer, were injured in the encounter. The Army recovered two AK 47 rifles, six magazine, 150 rounds, two Matrix sheet, four maps, two wireless sets, two GPS, one compass, 2 pouches and Indian currency from the dead militants. The Army in the night of September 24 launched an operation in the maize fields and forests of Haril in Handwara after they received information about the presence of militants in the area. The militants fired at the Army party resulting in a fierce encounter. In the morning of September 25, the Army party was again fired at by militants. Army returned the fire killing one militant. The gun fight continued till the afternoon resulting in the killing of another militant at around 1pm. One Army trooper was killed and an Army commando, Captain Manish and Army trooper were injured in the encounter. As per the matrix sheets, maps and GPS devices recovered from the militant who was killed early in the morning it appeared that he was a top ‘commander’ of the LeT. The militant group that was trapped in the Handwara forests appeared to have recently infiltrated. The Army sources said that it was a group of around eight militants that was trapped by the Army, which was using surveillance helicopters to track the movement of the group.

Army thwarted infiltration attempt by a group of five to six Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants at forward village of Balnoi on the Line of Control (LoC) in Mendhar sector of Poonch District in the morning of September 27, killing two militants and forcing others to retreat to Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), reports Daily Excelsior. Sources identified the slain militants as Abu Mahaz alias Khandari Kashmiri, a ‘divisional commander’ and Abu Anzala alias Abu Tallah Afghani, an ‘area commander’ of the LeT. Both of them were Pakistani nationals and were wearing Army uniform. Official sources said troops observed movement of militants trying to infiltrate into Indian Territory on surveillance gadgets installed between Roshni and Gun Hill Posts at Balnoi sector of Mendhar at 2am. Troops challenged the militants when they reached close to the fence and asked them to surrender. The militants opened firing and made attempts to sneak into this side. A heavy exchange of gun fighting between militants and the troops continued till 3.30am in which two infiltrators were killed. As the Army personnel were engaged in searches, Pakistani troops started heavy firing on Indian positions at 5.30am in an apparent bid to facilitate infiltration by remaining militants. The firing from Pakistan side continued till 8am, sources said. However, an effective retaliation by the troops forced rest of the militants to retreat to PoK. Army didn’t suffer any casualties in the firing. Troops conducted searches on the LoC and recovered bodies of both the slain militants along with a large quantity of arms, ammunition and other items. Recoveries made from the scene of encounter included two AK-47 rifles with 10 magazines and 193 rounds, two pouches, one wireless set with one antenna, two Under Barrel Grenade Launchers (UBGLs), eight UBGL grenades, two Pakistan made water bottles, one medicine kit, two Taiwan made Global Positioning Systems, two Nokia mobile handsets, two Indian SIM cards, Rs 12,000 Indian currency including three notes in 1000 denomination and 18 notes in 500 denomination, one map of Mendhar, one compass, one Matrix sheet, three Chinese hand grenades, one I Com set, one newspaper ‘Zaraar’ of Pakistan, two ‘Halwaal’ company’s juice bottles (also Made in Pakistan) and about 5 kg dry fruits.

In the course of firing a group of three to five militants reportedly made an attempt to infiltrate into the Indian territory which was foiled by the Indian troopers. Two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants, including a ‘divisional commander’, identified as Muzamil Amin Dar alias Urfi alias Abu Hushaam, were killed by the Security Forces (SFs) in Shallapora locality of Sopore in Baramulla District on October 21, reports Daily Excelsior. The other slain militant was identified as Abdullah Shaheen, a Pakistani resident. Inspector General of Police (IGP, Kashmir), S M Sahai said that Muzamil was involved in hatching a conspiracy to bomb Delhi markets. With the two killings, the operation that was launched on October 20 ended. On October 20, SFs had launched a search operation in the area after a tip off about the presence of two top LeT ‘commanders’. The militants opened fire from a house resulting into an encounter. One Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) trooper was injured in the initial fire. SFs later rescued about 60-70 civilians, including women and children, who were trapped in the encounter and halted the operation in the night. The operation was resumed in the morning of October 21 as SFs tried to storm the target house, triggering an encounter. An Army trooper and Policeman were injured during the initial gun battle in the morning. The intermittent firing continued till afternoon in which both the militants were killed. Security Forces (SFs) foiled a major infiltration bid killing four heavily armed militants in Keran sector of Kupwara District on November 9, while two other militants, in injured condition, managed to flee back to Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), reports Daily Excelsior. An Army officer said that four heavily armed infiltrators were killed in the encounter inside the Indian territory as they had managed to come around 200 meters inside the Line of Control (LoC). Two of their colleagues were badly injured in the encounter, but they managed to flee towards the LoC. They were chased but they managed to cross the LoC and fled back to the PoK. He further said that during the search operation of the area, four bodies of the militants and 5 AK Rifles along with huge quantity of arms and ammunition were recovered.

The hideout was located at some distance from house of slain Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) ‘commander’ Ghulam Qadir alias Tohid-ul-Islam, who was killed by Ramban police on May 25, 2012. In the night of December 31, Pakistan Army violating ceasefire resorted to firing at three posts of Army in Krishna Ghati (KG) sector in Poonch District, Daily Excelsior reported. Official sources said Pakistan Army started firing from their forward posts on the Line of Control (LoC) at KG sector at 11pm. The firing continued for about two hours. Indian side retaliated to ensure that the militants, if any, didn’t manage to infiltrate into this side under the cover of firing from across the LoC. No casualties or damage was reported on Indian side during the firing, sources said. Troops conducted searches on the LoC in the morning of January 1 in entire KG sector. However, there were no traces of any intrusion on the LoC.
