A Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) attack, similar to the one that killed 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel in Pulwama District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) in 2019, was averted after a joint team of the CRPF,Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) and Army acting on intelligence inputs intercepted a car which was abandoned by the driver after being fired upon at Ayangund area in Rajpora Tehsil (revenue unit) in Pulwama District on May 27, reports The Times of India. According to information, a white Santro fitted with IEDs was on the move in Pulwama with plans to enter the highway to target a security convoy. The suspect car was intercepted at a checkpoint on May 27 night and signalled to halt which it did not, leading to the Security Forces (SFs) opening fire.A search of the vehicle later found a container packed with explosives. This container itself weighed around 50 kilograms. Later on, the nearby area was vacated and then destroyed the car in a controlled explosion. Police believe the fidayeen(suicide squad) plot to target the SFs or their installations was a joint venture of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM). Inspector General of Police (IGP), Vijay Kumar, said one Adil and Waleed Bahia, who worked for HM and JeM respectively, and two others were believed to be part of this foiled terror attempt. “Over the past year, the security forces have neutralised commanders, including Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind (AGuH) founder Zakir Musa (killed in May 2019), top JeM‘commander’ Qari Yasir (January 2020), Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT)/The Resistance Front (TRF) ‘commander’ Asif Ahmad (April 2020), AGuH leader Burhan Koka (April 2020) and Hizb deputy commander Junaid Sehrai (May 2020).
