A convoy of Indian construction workers on February 4 came under attack from suspected Taliban militants in eastern Afghanistan but no one was injured, The Hindu reported. A vehicle, carrying three Indians, was badly damaged when an improvised explosive device went off around 7.45 a.m. when the convoy was on its way to a construction site in Khost, sources told PTI. The attackers also fired at the convoy of the workers of Indian company which is constructing a road between Khost and Gardez. Security Force personnel accompanying the convoy retaliated, forcing the attackers to flee, sources said, adding no one was injured in the attack. Earlier, a media report from Afghanistan had said that four Indian construction workers were injured in the incident. The Indian company is working under a sub-contract of an American firm.

A Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) cadre in handcuffs exploded an improvised grenade at the office of the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Gazipur on February 20, injuring at least 13 persons, including nine Policemen and three journalists, reports Daily Star. The blast occurred at around 4:30pm when four JMB cadres, including three women, were being paraded before the media. The SP in Gazipur, Abdul Baten, said Mamun alias Zahid, the male arrestee, flung himself on the recovered grenades on display and later hurled the grenade at the Police and journalists present. The Police had arrested them six hours earlier and recovered five grenades and a cache of bomb-making material at Tongi.

Two civilians, identified as trader Sanatan Das (27) and Akhil Adhikary (58), were killed and at least 17 others were injured when a powerful bomb strapped to a bicycle exploded at a busy marketplace in the Alipurduar town of Jalpaiguri District on March 18, reports Indian Express. Police suspected the involvement of Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO) - its “10th batch trained in Bangladesh - and the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) in the blast to destabilize North Bengal before the Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament) election, adds Times of India. “The blast was feared because KLO has been regrouping for the past few months,” said an intelligence officer. The District Superintendent of Police also admitted that the KLO could be behind the attack. “The outfit has recruited more than 200 cadres in the last few months and trained them in Bangladesh in 10 batches,” said a Crime Investigation Department official.

The Hindu reports that locally-made improvised explosives packed in stainless steel containers were recovered near a culvert on Ring Road in Madurai on June 15. A passer-by who tried to open one of the containers suffered minor injuries when it exploded. According to Police sources, a travel bag stuffed with the containers was noticed by Mahesh (27) of Rajapalayam, a mechanic working in a hydraulic equipment workshop on Ring Road. When efforts to open a container failed, he threw it in stagnant water nearby. The second one, when thrown, exploded. The mechanic fled the scene with minor injuries on his face and leg. He reportedly informed the Police about the incident through an advocate.

An employee suffered a minor injury when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) went off on the fifth floor of the Ernakulam Collectorate at Kakkanad near Kochi in the afternoon of July 10, reports The Hindu. A few persons, including two employees of the Collectrate, were reportedly interrogated by the investigating agencies in connection with the blast. However, no arrests have been made. Senior officials of the Intelligence Bureau, Research and Analysis Wing and State Special Branch have launched investigations into the incident, Police officials said. The nitrate-based IED was set in a pipe and was detonated using a timer and detonator, confirmed experts and officials of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad who visited the site. The timer could not be recovered as it was suspected to have blown off completely in the impact of the explosion, while parts of the detonator had been recovered, it is learnt.

India for the time is said to have struck back with machine guns when Pakistan in the night of September 11 reportedly fired two rockets into border villages of Punjab near Wagah sector, the second such provocation in two months, reports Times of India. The unsettling attack from a belligerent neighbour came on a day when the Border Security Force (BSF) had deployed its first batch of women along the border. However, no causality was reported till news last came in at 11.45 pm, (IST) stating that Pakistan had fired three more rockets which were yet to be traced. “Earlier, two rockets were fired from the Pakistani side, one falling in Dhanoae Khurd and the other is yet to be traced,” said BSF, Inspector General (IG), Frontier, Himmat Singh. As India opened fire from Pul Kanjari end, losing patience over repeated violations during peace times between the two nations, the IG confirmed, “During my tenure, this is the first time that BSF has retaliated.” Swinging into action, Police laid down barricades on roads leading up to the border, disallowing even the media to cover the incident. Calling for an emergency flag meeting with Pakistan Rangers, sources said, BSF strongly protested the unwarranted firing. The last time Pakistan had breached border rules was in the night of July 5, when three rockets landed on the Indian side — one each in Dhandae, Baherwal and Konake — while another failed to make it and fell in the attacker’s territory near Pul Kanjari. However, Pakistan's Border Security Forces on September 12 (today) rejected a contention by their Indian counterparts that several rockets were fired into Indian Territory from across the border in the Wagah sector. A meeting between the sector commanders of Pakistan Rangers and Indian BSF over the issue remained "inconclusive", a spokesman for Pakistan Rangers said. The BSF officials had maintained that some rockets were fired from Pakistani said early this morning but the Rangers official had denied this, he said. The sector commanders met a little after 1 am (IST) following reports of three major explosions in the Wagah sector.

Targeting the Indian embassy in Kabul for the second time, a Taliban suicide bomber on October 8 blew up an explosives-laden car outside the mission, killing 17 persons and injuring over 80, including three Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) soldiers, The Hindu reported. The embassy staff, however, was unhurt. The blast, which occurred near the outer perimeter of the heavily-fortified embassy around 8.30 a.m., damaged a wall and destroyed a watch tower. "A suicide car bomb blast took place near the Indian embassy in which 15 civilians and two Afghan policemen were killed and 76 wounded. Most of the wounded are civilians," the Afghan Interior Ministry said. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack and identified the bomber as Khalid, Al Jazeera TV channel said. Indian ambassador Jayant Prasad said the "embassy was the target" but the suicide bomber failed to breach the security perimeter. Afghan President Hamid Karzai strongly condemned the blast, saying it was a "heinous act of terror" planned to kill innocent civilians. "This heinous act of terror was an obvious attack on civilians and the perpetrators of this attack and those who planned it are vicious terrorists who kill innocent people for their malicious goals," he said in a statement. The Afghan Foreign Ministry spokesman Fakiri said the "brutal attack" was carried out by "enemies" of Indo-Afghan ties and their "bases are outside Afghanistan." The explosion was reportedly more powerful than the blast of July 7, 2008. In that attack, a suicide car bomber rammed the gate of the embassy, killing 60 people, including senior Indian Foreign Service officer V.V. Rao and Brigadier-rank Defence Attache R.D. Mehta.

Director-General of Police (DGP) B. S. Bassi said that initial information indicated the blast could have been on account of accidental explosion of gelatines or crude bombs stored in the boot of the scooter. Police sources said that the two injured persons were identified as Melgunda Patil and Yogesh Naik of Sanathan Sangsthan, a right wing Hindu outfit linked to Pragya Singh Thakur, one of the accused of Malegaon bomb blast.
