The militants were part of a team sent for disrupting the Republic Day [January 26, 2011] functions in villages along the international border with Bangladesh, Police said. Shillong Times reports that Security force (SFs) for the past three days conducted search operations along the coal belt areas in West Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya on March 3, after intelligence inputs suggested that suspected armed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) cadres were camping in those areas. "We strongly suspect the suspected GNLA cadres must be camping in Bangladesh," West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) N. Raja Marthandan said. Earlier, intelligence inputs suggested GNLA militants' nexus with the Bangladesh Border Guards (BBG) to carry out extortion from coal-laden trucks on the other side of the border. The coal-laden trucks reportedly face demand of INR five lakh to INR 10 lakh when they enter the neighbouring country from Meghalaya.
