Two unidentified militants of Ranjan Daimary fraction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) shot dead a relative of a pro-talks ‘commander’ in Sonitpur District in the night of January 2, according to Telegraph. Police said two militants, armed with AK-47 rifles, came to the house of Udai Mushahari, the brother of NDFB ‘commander’ M. Failou, at Silapur village in the Balijuri area under Sootea Police Station in Sonitpur District along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border around 10 pm (IST) and enquired about him from a member of his family. “When Udai came out to see who was looking for him, the assailants sprayed bullets, killing him on the spot,” a Police official said. The militants managed to escape soon after killing Udai. The Police later recovered eight empty cartridges of an AK-47 rifle from the site. Sources said Udai was on the hit list of the Daimary faction as he was suspected to be a Police informer.

Another militant managed to escape from the incident sit. Both were involved in the January 15 grenade blast in Udalguri town. The grenade explosion, near a swahid bedi (martyr’s memorial) close to a lodge in Udalguri town at 6.30pm (IST), had left one dead and 10 injured. Two grenades, a 9-mm pistol and ammunition were recovered from the possession of the slain militant.

Two suspected militants were shot dead by a combined force of the Imphal East District Police and Assam Rifles during an encounter at Wakha Lambi Yangbi Khunou under Porompat Police Station in the evening of January 16. While other militants managed to escape, one Ak-56 Rilfes with a magazine loaded with seven live rounds, and one 9-mm pistol loaded with one magazine with three live rounds were recovered from the possessions of the slain militants. One of the two slain militants was subsequently identified as Oinam Joyshankar (29). According to family sources, Joyshankar was a former cadre of the People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) and was recently released from Sajiwa Jail on December 3, 2009.

The slain cadre was identified as self-styled ‘sergeant’ Bidyut Kalita of the ‘109th battalion’ of the ULFA. Two AK-81 assault rifles, 129 live rounds of ammunition, one Dragonov sniper rifle with 76 bullets, one kilogram of RDX explosives and a wireless set, one voltmeter and extortion notes were recovered from the hideout. The ‘109th battalion’ is entrusted with mainly logistical work, like guiding ULFA militants to and from Bangladesh through Garo Hills, which borders the neighbouring country and Assam. The Police said the villages along the border areas of East Garo Hills have become a safe hideout for ULFA militants. The anti-talks faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) also uses the tract.

Sonitpur Superintendent of Police Jitmol Doley said, “The makeshift camp was located inside a dense jungle in the Kontapara area under Soteea police station.” He said there were at least five militants in the camp at the time of the raid but the others escaped following a shootout. SFs believe that six persons, including a school student, abducted from Sonitpur District within the past two months, are being kept hostage in one such camp in the foothills of Arunachal Pradesh. The whereabouts of an Indian Forest Service (IFS) official, abducted by NDFB militants from West Kameng District in Arunachal Pradesh bordering Assam in May is still unknown.

He is the first cadre to be killed by the SFs after he rejoined the outfit after fleeing from the Kakopathar designated camp. Dibrugarh Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP, Headquarters) Debasish Sarma said the Police had received clues about the presence of the ULFA militant from another cadre of the outfit who was arrested from Namrup on July 19. “We have recovered a universal machine gun, a drum magazine, 15 rounds of live ammunition, a satellite phone disc, some cell-phone recharge vouchers, 20 batteries, a heavy battery, probably used in a motorcycle, five electronic detonators and the like from the encounter site,” the additional SP said. Sources said the encounter ensued after the Special Operation Team (SOT) personnel got a tip-off about two traders from Shahlang going to deliver INR 7 00000 to the LAEF at Rongkhujre. [IST], militants waylaid a passenger bus going from Tezpur to Sijusa in Arunachal Pradesh, identified the Hindi-speaking passengers, and asked them to get down. Then they asked the bus to leave and shot dead the Hindi-speaking passengers on the spot. In the second incident, a group of militants shot dead five persons including a woman near Belsiri railway station near Dhekiajuli of Sonitpur District. In the third incident, militants shot dead one person near Kekerukuchi in Baksa District and injured two others. In the fourth incident, another group of militants shot dead a woman near Hugrajuli in Sonitpur District. However, Times of India reports the killing of 19 persons in the same four incidents.
