One person sustained serious injury when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded while he was reportedly trying to plant it at Eros Lane, near Blue Hill station in Dimapur town of Dimapur District on January 5, reports Nagaland Post. Two more IEDs were also recovered from the vehicle near the site. The injured person was identified as Longjam Ojit Meitei (30) son of L. Joykumar Meitei, from Sapinghot area, Makha Leikai Post Office Lamlong under Lamlai Police Station in Imphal East District of Manipur. Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police (SP) Dimapur, Meren Jamir told media persons that the incident was aimed at creating fear psychosis among the general public in view of the forthcoming Republic Day celebration.

Kohima police personnel recovered three empty cases of 7.65 caliber used in .32 pistol and two bullet heads from the place where three stationary vehicles were damaged by some unknown militants, reports Nagaland Post. The incident had happened on January 23 wherein some unknown miscreants had fired upon three stationary vehicles located at Pezieliecie and Kezieke Colony in Kohima District. All the three vehicles were found with Against Corruption and Unabated Taxation (ACAUT) sticker. ACAUT has been campaigning against the parallel taxation by various militant organisations. (ACAUT) has strongly condemned the senseless damaging of vehicles in Kohima that reportedly had sticker “I am ACAUT” on it.

Armed assailants, on February 14, abducted a student of class nine, identified as Lamji Chingmak Chang (15), from Tuensung town in Tuensang District and later shot him dead, reports Eastern Mirror Nagaland. Following the abduction and killing incident, an angry mob ransacked the office of the Deputy Commissioner and also reportedly fired several shot at the office of the Superintendent of Police of Tuensang. Chang and Yimchungrü tribes have been engaged in bitter fight over some land dispute in Tuensang town since November 2014 and in a recent clash two people were killed on February 6. Nine people have been arrested in connection with the incident In related news, two persons were arrested by Assam Rifles (AR) and Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) in a joint operation to sanitize the area, reports Nagaland Post on February 16. On February 17, Assam Rifles (AR) busted an illegal ammunition manufacturing unit in Peren town in Peren District, reports Nagaland Post. Basing on specific information about the movement of an arms peddler in general area of Tening in Peren District, AR conducted an operation and arrested an individual, identified as Teulak moving from Peren to Katang in Manipur on motorcycle and recovered 750 gram gun power, 250 percussion caps and assorted ammunition were recovered. The arrested individual further revealed that that he had purchased these illegal ammunition and items from Peren town, after which AR further conducted an operation and arrested the owner of the illegal ammunition factory, identified as Raghu Nath Das. 10 kg gun powder, 13, 417 .22 live rounds, 1263 cartridges of 12 Bore, 197 live rounds assorted ammunition, percussion caps, empty cases and equipment used for manufacturing of ammunition were recovered.

On April 25, an Assam Rifles trooper, identified as Rifleman Vijay Singh Rathore was killed after being fired upon with a 9 mm calibre, near Classic Island-- Raj Bhavan road in Kohima, by Khaplang faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-K) militants, reports Nagaland Post. When chased by the AR party, the fleeing gunmen lobbed a grenade but it failed to explode. Kohima Police and AR party rushed to the site and recovered the unexploded grenade reported to be of Chinese make along with 11 empty shells of 9 mm calibre. A team from the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) also rushed to the site and later diffused it. Soon after the incident, a massive combing operation was launched in the capital by Kohima Police and AR. Security forces have confirmed the involvement of NSCN-K in the incident. While information from various sources reported that the NSCN-K team was ambushed, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of AR however claimed that NSCN-K had fired upon Security Forces (SFs). Sources said six of the fatalities were NSCN-K and two were reportedly civilians. Two women and an Army trooper were injured too. Though it could not be confirmed, sources said one of the injured woman is the wife of NSCN-K functionary and ‘PRO’, ‘colonel’ Isak Sumi. The Assam Rifles (AR) killed four militants of the Khole-Khitovi faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-KK), later identified as ‘Sergeant Major’ Sangkiu, ‘Sergeant’ Kiumnuhen, ‘Private’ Tokiu and ‘Private’ Wonchi, in “an accidental encounter” in Laikunger village in Tuensang District on November 15, reports The Assam Tribune. According to the AR source, on receiving information of movement of a group of cadres belonging to Khaplang faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-K) with weapons in the area of Laikunger village, a patrol of AR reached the area in the early hours on November 15 and cordoned off the village. It said as the patrol approached the community hall inside the village, they were fired upon with automatic assault rifles from inside the community hall complex. The AR troops fired back in self defence and the fire fight between the two groups continued for almost two and half hours. After the firing stopped, a detailed search of the area was carried out which resulted in the recovery of bodies of four underground cadres along with four assault rifles which included one AK-47 assault rifle, one M-16 assault rifle and two .303 assault rifles. The underground cadres were in possession of 101 live bullets of AK-47 rifle, 230 live bullets of M-16 rifle and 29 live bullets of .303 rifle. An AR statement said that “There had been many inputs from intelligence agencies in the past week regarding movement of NSCN-K cadres from Myanmar across the Indo-Myanmar border in the districts of Mon, Tuensang, Zunheboto, Kiphire and Phek.” “The NSCN-K cadres had entered Nagaland to carry out subversive actions against the security forces as well as to collect extortion money from various agencies like TTK Services (Dimapur), Airtel Telecom (Dimapur, Kohima, Zunheboto etc), contractors, businessmen, annual tax from State Teachers Association (Zunheboto), annual house tax from villages etc.” “There were also reports of movement of cadres of Isak-Muivah faction of NSCN (NSCN-IM), NSCN-KK and Reformation faction of NSCN (NSCN-R) in these areas for collection of similar taxes," the statement added.

According to a press release from Inspector General Assam Rifles - North (IGAR-N), the cache included “five sophisticated weapons along with their ammunition of various calibers, rifle grenades and other war like stores which were concealed in three dug out, wrapped in polythene and tarpaulin.” The hideout from where the huge cache was recovered is suspected to be the remnants of the arms cache which might have been shifted from Assam following the operations conducted by AR on September 29-30, the release added.

One cadre of the Khaplang faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN-K), was killed in a gunfight with troops of 18 Assam Rifles (AR) in general area of Zhutovi village in Dimapur District on December 30, reports Nagaland Post. After receiving inputs of presence of NSCN-K cadres, two patrols of AR personnel were sent to the area. When the troops reached a rubber plantation area, three persons were reportedly carrying extortion from truckers, AR stated. As the AR personnel approached the spot and began to question the trio, AR said two of them fled from the area while the other one took out a pistol and fired at the AR troops. In the exchange of fire, the patrol leader shot the suspected NSCN-K cadre, AR sources informed. One 9 mm pistol along with cash was recovered from the deceased, while the body was later handed over to Police, AR said.
