His abduction is believed to be for ransom since he had recently obtained compensation to the tune of INR 7.8 million. Police have identified the abductors as a gang of dacoits numbering 6-7 who are going by the name of A’chik National Liberation Co-operative Army (ANLCA).

The Telegraph reports that the A’chik National Liberation Army (ANLA) militants on February 3, killed two people including one deserter, Ronald R. Marak and his nephew, Meghnath R. Marak. Police said Ronald R. Marak, a former ‘finance secretary’ of the outfit, was abducted in the night of February 1 from his residence at Wageasi (East Garo Hills District) and his nephew Meghnath R. Marak on February 3. “It looks like that both the man and his nephew were killed by the ANLA after Ronald deserted the outfit,” said a Police Officer. The body of Meghnath was found from Mendimaalong-Kharkutta Road in North Garo Hills. Sources said Ronald left the outfit with INR 1.5 million and a rifle. Though Ronald’s body has not been found, Police suspect that he has been killed.

Two cattle traders were abducted by armed militants of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) at Gastala under Phulbari Police Station of West Garo Hills District on February 14, reports Telegraph. Seven cattle traders were returning in an autorickshaw when 15 armed militants of the GNLA intercepted the vehicle at Gastala and ordered them to disembark. They were held at gunpoint and taken deep inside a forest. Five of the seven cattle traders fled under cover of darkness and reached Hatsinghimari in Dhubri District (Assam). Faruque Ahmed (40) and Aftabul Rahman (55), however, could not escape from the clutches of the militants. Ahmed and Rahman had gone to purchase cattle from Gastola market.

Sources informed that four unidentified armed men came to the labour camp of one Donald Rymbai of Rymbai village at around 9pm and forcibly dragged the supervisor of the coal mine, Kumar Bhujel, outside and took him to a nearby jungle. On March 10, the kidnappers called up his wife and demanded INR 1 million for his safe release.

Police sources reveal that Goera was arrested some months ago during an extortion drive and had served a jail term before his release. Police did not rule out the involvement of two active Garo militant groups in the area, Liberation of A’chik Elite Force (LAEF) and A’chik National Liberation Army (ANLA). Though Superintendent of Police (SP) Lakador Syiem denied having any knowledge about payment of ransom, highly placed Police sources, revealed that money did change hands for the engineer’s safe return. It has also been revealed that the abductors transported Srivastava into Bangladesh shortly after he was kidnapped. The engineer was supervising the construction of flood lighting of the border fencing along the Bangladesh Border. SP stated that Liberation of A’chik Elite Force (LAEF), a group known to be responsible for a number of extortion and kidnapping cases in the region was responsible for the abduction.

A small time florist of South Garo Hills, identified as Ranjit Modak who was abducted at gunpoint from Dambuk Aga area in South Garo Hills District on December 5 and taken across to Bangladesh was released unharmed on December 13, reports The Shillong Times. According to the reports he was let off by the militants near the international border on the Bangladesh side and he crossed over to India. Earlier, the kidnappers had demanded INR 1 lakh for his safe release. However, the Police suspect that money had exchanged hands although the victim claims to have only paid INR 18000 which was forcibly taken from him by the group at the time of his kidnapping. Ranjit Modak reportedly revealed that the gang comprised of Bangladeshi Muslims and Garos who were armed.
