Earlier, it had demanded Rs 2,500,000 as ransom for his safe release and set January 15 as the deadline. According to media reports, on January 27, a businessman identified as Manower Hossagin was abducted from Garobada, bordering West Khasi Hills by HaJong United Liberation Army (HULA), a newly formed terrorist outfit in the West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya. Citing a police source, reports added that a group of five-armed HULA cadres abducted Hossagin, who runs a brick kiln in Esakuri village near Garobada and is a resident of Assam, in a Maruti van. The reports further added that the outfit allegedly receives support from the proscribed terrorist outfits of northeast, including the United Liberation of Asom (ULFA) and National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB). Meanwhile a search was launched in the area to rescue the trader when reports last came in.

Citing police sources, media reports said the doctor was released at Williamnagar, Meghalaya. State Home Minister Lotsing A. Sangma reportedly said the doctor was set free without any ransom being paid. To recollect, Bezbaruah was abducted on December 19 from Williamnagar in East Garo Hills and Rs 30 lakh was demanded as ransom, with January 15 as the deadline. Later, the ANVC demanded improvement of medical facilities in Garo Hills and reset the deadline to January 25.

Delayed reports said terrorists of the Assam-based National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), People’s Liberation Front of Meghalaya (PLF-M) and Achick National Volunteer Council (ANVC) who jointly abducted a Customs Inspector along with six coal exporters set March 20, today as deadline for ransom to be paid. While Rs 3 million has been demanded from the Customs department, the outfits also separately demanded Rs 50 million for the release of coal exporters. Meanwhile, on March 17, Customs Commissioner D D Ingty reportedly said to the press that the department had suspended coal export from Meghalaya and Assam to Bangladesh with immediate effect following this incident. The custom official and six exporters were taken captive, on February 28, from Ghasuapara in South Garo Hills district.

Earlier, the NDFB had demanded a million-dollars and had also set March 20 as the deadline. On February 28, a combined group of NDFB, Achik National Volunteers Council (ANVC) and People’s Liberation Front of Meghalaya (PLF-M) terrorists carried out the abduction at Ghasuapara, in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills district. The report also indicated that the terrorists had confined the captives at an undisclosed location in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills district.
