Telegraph reports that unidentified militants opened fire on a Police convoy, killing a Constable and injuring two others, including a Sub-Inspector, near Impui Basti on the Haflong-Mahur road in the North Cachar Hills District on January 4. Two siblings, one of them a 10-year-old girl, also died in the ambush after they were caught in the cross-fire as the Security Forces retaliated after the gunmen, hiding in the foliage on both sides of the road, opened fire on the two-vehicle Assam Police convoy. According to Assam Tribune, two suspected United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants were killed in an encounter with the Security Forces (SFs) at Na-Kuchi under Khetri Police Station in the Kamrup (urban) District on January 10. One 9 mm pistol, a hand grenade, two magazines and six rounds of live ammunition were recovered from the possession of the slain militants. The suspected ULFA militants were believed to be led by ‘self-styled sergeant major’ Jayanta Kalita alias Jintu, adds Shillong Times. Kalita, a top ‘commander’ of the 109th battalion' of the ULFA operating in Western Assam, was reportedly escaped towards the jungles of Meghalaya border.

One militant belonging to ceasefire-group of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), identified as Dilon Dowerah, and one Army trooper, Havaldar Dayal Singh, were killed in an encounter at Talpathar village under Pengeri Police Station in Tinsukia District on January 13, according to Telegraph. The Army, however, said that another member of the gang might be injured in the encounter. Superintendent of Police of Tinsukia District Diganta Bora said that ULFA cadre Dilon, who hailed from Mutapung in Tinsukia, had formally laid down weapons on December 28, 2007. After two ULFA cadres, Akon Moran alias Ajit Moran, and Biplob Baruah alias Pinku Phukon, managed to escape from the Kakopathar-based designated camp belonging to ceasefire-group of the outfit on July 23, 2009, the trio teamed up to form a gang which extorted and abducted in the name of ULFA. AK-56 rifles, some live ammunition, a magazine, a cellular phone, some incriminating documents including ULFA extortion notes, were recovered from the incident site.

One more United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militant was killed by Security Forces (SFs) in the February 2 encounter at Bhokelikanda under Kalaigaon Police Station in Udalguri District in which one ULFA cadre and a minor civilian were reportedly killed, according to Telegraph. The two slain militants were identified as central Assam ‘area commander’ Bosa Singh alias Ranojjal Kakoty and his bodyguard Ankur Bonia alias Bishnuram Deka. Sentinel reports that Hailakandi Police, led by Superintendent of Police, Vivekananda Das, raided the hideout of the Muslim militant outfit, Atabur Bahini, at Sudhurtal, a place between Jhalnacherra and Betcherra in Hailakandi District bordering Mizoram on February 26. A gun battle continued for almost an hour and when firing from the other side came to a halt, the Police entered the room and recovered dead bodies of two militants. One of the dead militant belonged to the Reang community and the other a Bengali Muslim, identified as, Alimuddin of Triganga village in South Hailakandi. Sources said that the recently released forest guard, Nazim Uddin Laskar, who was earlier abducted by unknown militants, had also identified the bodies of the militants as his abductors. A National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) militant, involved in timber smuggling in Chariduar reserve forest, was killed in an encounter with the Army at Abhoi centre near Batasipur in Sonitpur District along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border on March 19, according to Telegraph. Defence Spokesperson Rajesh Kalia said that a group of militants, who were collecting ‘tax’ from timber smugglers, were accosted by the troops. As the SFs reached the house of one village farmer Chinta Ram Barua, the militant lobbed three grenades upon the troops, which immediately exploded on the spot, in an attempt to escape. But the retaliation made by the SFs resulted in the killing of the militant on the spot. One 9-mm pistol along with two magazines and 12 rounds of live ammunition, a cash of INR 204000, 95 subscriber identity module cards along with seven cellular phones, several unaddressed extortion notes and some incriminating documents were recovered from the possession of the slain militant.

A large haul of explosives and weapons were recovered from the possession of the militants. The KLTF is a newly floated group in the Karbi Anglong District, comprising some cadres of the Karbi Longri North Cachar Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF) that entered into a ceasefire with Union Government in 2009. The KLTF is fighting for an independent homeland for the Karbi tribe in eastern Assam.
