Security forces killed a United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militant belonging to the Charlie Company of the 28th battalion in an encounter at Ahukhat village under Makum police station in the Tinsukia district in January 10, Telegraph reports. The militant was identified as Corporal Puwali Dowerah alias Hiren Dowerah, a resident of Hatijan. Three other cadres, however, managed to escape. The security forces also recovered one .32 pistol, one magazine with two live rounds and three bicycles at the site of the encounter.

According to a delayed report, a Karbi Longri North Cachar Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF) militant, identified as Philip Singnar, was killed in an encounter with the security forces at Kakajan under Borpathar Police Station in the Karbi Anglong district on January 23. Another cadre, Lorence Teron, was arrested by the security forces on the spot while another managed to escape taking advantage of the dense forest. An AK-56, two magazines, a smoke grenade and 55 rounds of live immunizations were recovered from their possession.

Two United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) militants and a Captain of the Gorkha Regiment of the Indian Army were killed in an encounter at Borpathar Rongagora under Doomdooma Police Station in the Tinsukia District on January 27, according to Assam Tribune. Acting on a tip-off that a group of ULFA cadres were taking shelter there, the Army personnel launched an operation. Captain S. K. Choudhury and two militants, identified as Tutu Maran alias Pallab Baruah and Jitul Dohutia alias Chandan, were killed in the gun battle. One AK-56 rifle, two magazines, more than 100 live bullets, one mobile phone and an IED were recovered from the incident site.

Two militants belonging to the ‘28 Battalion’ of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), identified as Tapan Baruah alias Arun Baruah and Parikshit Chettry, were shot dead by the Assam Police during an encounter at Thanubam village under Barbaruah police station in the Dibrugarh district on March 4-morning, reports Telegraph. Two pistols, some ammunition, explosives, three cell phones and some documents were recovered from the encounter site. Dibrugarh district Superintendent of Police, Anurag Agarwal, said, “Our men were fired upon from a house around 3.45 this morning to which we retaliated and in the ensuing gunbattle, two of them were killed. A search is on to trace the others.”

Three militants were killed in separate encounters with the Army and police in the North Lakhimpur and Karbi Anglong districts on March 15, reported Assam Tribune. The security force (SF) personnel killed two militants, suspected to be either from the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) or the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDBF), during an exchange of fire at Silikhaguri Sapori under Narayanpur police station in the North Lakhimpur district. An injured militant escaped with his AK-47 rifle, while a pistol with five rounds of ammunition and a revolver with four rounds were recovered from the slain militants, the sources said. In a separate encounter in the Karbi Anglong district, an NDFB militant was killed by the SF personnel. A group of three NDFB militants involved in extortion had gone to collect the money when SF personnel stopped them, but they managed to escape after opening fire. The SFs chased the militants and in an encounter at Panbari area under Diphu police station, killed one of them. However, the two others managed to escape. The SFs seized a .32 bore revolver and five cartridges, a hand grenade and a mobile set from the slain militant.

A Karbi Longri North Cachar Hills Liberation Front (KLNLF) militant was killed and huge quantities of arms and explosives were recovered on April 20 by the security forces (SFs) when they neutralised a KLNLF camp in the Karbi Anglong district, according to PTI. Acting on a tip-off, the SFs launched an operation in the Manja area and in the ensuing encounter one militant was killed while five others managed to escape. During subsequent search operations, the SFs recovered an AK-56 rifle, three AK-47 rifles, one .30 Winchester carbine, one 40-mm Single Barrel Grenade Launcher, one 5.56 rifle with an Under Barrel Grenade Launcher, 234 rounds of assorted ammunitions of AK-56 & AK-47 rifles and a .303 rifle with magazines.

12 Black Widow militnts were killed and 18 others injured in a gun battle with the security forces (SFs) in the North Cachar Hills district on May 10, reports The Hindu. Troops of the 8th Sikh Regiment and police cordoned off the village along the Assam-Nagaland-Manipur border around 4.30am (IST) during the operation at a camp of the Black Widow sheltering around 30 militnts, police sources said. The militants opened fire on the SFs, who retaliated killing 12 of them, the sources said. None from the security forces or the villagers was injured or killed, they said. The village is dominated by Jemi-Naga tribals and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland - Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) militants were also suspected to be in the militant group as they have an understanding with the Black Widow militants. The dead were yet to be identified and investigations were on, the sources said. The ceasefire between the Black Widow and Centre expired recently and the State Government had been instructed by the Union Home Ministry to draw up an action plan to improve the law and order situation, particularly in the NC Hills district.

A separate incident, Black Widow (BW) militants killed at least seven police personnel at Langlai near Thujuari of North Cachar Hills district, reports Sentinel. Three militants were also killed in the retaliatory firing. Haflong police sources said that the BW militants opened fire on the police party who were carrying the body of a Dima Halim Daogah (DHD) leader, Naklai Dimasa, who was killed by the BW militants on October 29 from Haflong Civil Hospital to Diyongmukh after the post mortem. Out of the seven slain police personnel, four were constables in the 8th Battalion of Assam Police; two were from the District Armed Branch and one Home Guard. Meanwhile, Dinob Dimasa, spokesman of Black Widow, denied the outfit’s involvement in the ambush.
