At least 15 vehicles were vandalised, two were set ablaze, 35 homemade bombs exploded and three people were injured in Dhaka City alone. At least 30 people including two Policemen were injured during clashes between Police and pickets across the country outside of the Dhaka City.

Some 30 persons, including four Policemen, were injured after leaders and cadres of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) clashed with Police in Dhaka city and Gaibandha District on January 24, reports The Daily Star. In Dhaka city, 12 cadres of JeI-ICS were injured and six of them arrested when Police intercepted procession brought out by JeI-ICS cadres. In Gaibandha District, clashes erupted when Police intercepted another procession brought out by JeI-ICS cadres at Station Bazar Road demanding immediate release of their detained leaders. At least 14 JeI-ICS cadres and four Policemen sustained injuries. Gaibandha Additional Superintendent of Police Mosharaf Hossain said the cadres in the procession were armed with various weapons.

At least 41 persons were injured in clashes between the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) cadres and the Police in the dawn-to-dusk general strike called by BNP on February 4 in 16 northern Districts of Bangladesh, reports New Age. 30 people were injured in Thakurgaon District, eight in Sirajganj District, two in Jaipurhat District and one woman in Bogra District. The opposition BNP called the general strike demanding the release of its acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and party leader Ruhul Kuddus Talukder Dulu and withdrawal of the cases filed against them. Police said they used sound grenades, water cannon, tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse at least 70,000 Islamists who were camped at Motijheel as part of a push for a new blasphemy law. Mozammel Haq, a Police inspector at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said that 11 bodies were brought to the clinic. One victim was a Policeman who had been hacked in the head by protesters with machetes. Eleven other bodies were taken to three other clinics. There was also deadly violence at Kanchpur on the southeastern outskirts of the capital. More than 5,000 Islamists clashed with police and border guards, prompting security forces to respond with live rounds. At least six people were killed there including three Policemen and a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB). On May 5, at least four civilians were killed and hundred others injured as HeI cadres enforced their "Dhaka siege" programme across Dhaka City on May 5, reports New Age. Two of the deceased were identified as Siddiqur Rahman and Zubair. Identities of two others could not be known. By evening, the Home Ministry deployed 20 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and they were patrolling the city. In Dhaka city, four pedestrians were injured in crude bomb explosions. The four injured received treatment at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital. In Satkhira District, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station sustained injuries when JeI-ICS cadres exploded handmade bombs and petrol bombs in a clash with the Police. The clash erupted as the cadres attacked the law enforcers when they were trying to remove logs from Alipur-Raichpur road. The Police arrested five JeI-ICS cadres from the spot.

Violence has gripped the country as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her ruling AL press ahead with the January 5 vote. BNP leader Begum Khaleda Zia has called on Bangladeshis to march to Dhaka city on December 28 to protest against the elections, declaring "democracy is dead". The opposition says it will not take part unless an interim Government is installed and Hasina steps down. Hasina wants to do away with the practice of installing a caretaker Government. The army will be deployed until January 9.

Two persons were killed and many others were injured during the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led 18-party nationwide protest on December 29, reports New Age. In Dhaka city, one person was killed during clashes between the activists of BNP-led 18-party alliance and Police in Malibagh. The deceased was identified as Mansur Prodhaniya (24), president of ward no 3 unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI). He was a student of a private university of city’s Uttara area. Seven of ICS cadres also sustained bullet injuries. Police arrested cadres at the clash. Abul Kashem (30), a member of the Railway Security Force, died when two young people exploded a crude bomb on his face on the platform at the Kamalapur Railway Station of Dhaka City. Two youths who were carrying the bomb were also injured in the blast. Police said two youths — Alam (18) and Aminul (16) — were entering the railway station through the rail tracks from a level crossing. As the two youths reached beat No 17 of the station, railway security guard Kashem challenged them. Sensing danger, Aminul hurled the bag containing the bomb at the face of Kashem and soon it went off with a big bang, killing Kashem on the spot and injuring Alam and Aminul themselves.
