The nationwide dawn-to-dusk hartal (general strike) enforced by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led 18-party alliance, protesting the latest fuel price hike, was marked by incidents of arson, vandalism, explosions, and chases and counter-chases on January 6, reports The Daily Star. At least 15 vehicles were vandalised, two were set ablaze, 35 homemade bombs exploded and three people were injured in Dhaka City alone. At least 30 people including two Policemen were injured during clashes between Police and pickets across the country outside of the Dhaka City.

An eight-hour hartal (shut down) enforced by Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) ended with some stray incidents, including arson and vandalism in Rajshahi District on January 15, reports The Daily Star. JeI-ICS cadres observed the hartal demanding release of all detained leaders of the party, including its assistant secretary general Mujibur Rahman. Police said the JeI-ICS cadres hurled brick chips on the law enforcers triggering a clash that left five cadres injured. The JeI-ICS cadres also burned tyres in Rajshahi College area in the Rajshahi city. 34 cadres were arrested from the Rajshahi College area.

At least 41 persons were injured in clashes between the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) cadres and the Police in the dawn-to-dusk general strike called by BNP on February 4 in 16 northern Districts of Bangladesh, reports New Age. 30 people were injured in Thakurgaon District, eight in Sirajganj District, two in Jaipurhat District and one woman in Bogra District. The opposition BNP called the general strike demanding the release of its acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and party leader Ruhul Kuddus Talukder Dulu and withdrawal of the cases filed against them. All motorised vehicles remained off the roads and shops, markets and commercial establishments remained closed during the general strike in the 16 Districts. Banks, Government offices and educational institutions, however, remained open with a low transactions and thin attendance.

At least three people were killed and many injured across the country on February 5 as Jamaat-e-Islam (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres enforced a dawn-to-dusk hartal (shut down) protesting the war crimes trial of its leader Abdul Quader Mollah, reports The Daily Star. In Chittagong District, two ICS cadres (Imran Khan and Afzal Hossain) and Shafiqu, a worker of Youngone factory were killed during a clash with Police. Police arrested 15 ICS cadres from the District.In capital Dhaka, the JeI-ICS cadres exploded 8-10 crude bombs when police obstructed them. A Police constable, Nur Nabi, was injured and 52 cadres were arrested from the city. In Comilla District, one JeI-ICS cadre was injured in Police firing. In Rajshahi District, about 10 cadres were injured in a clash with Police as they were intercepted by the law-enforcers. In Khulna District, Police arrested seven cadres from the Khulna city. In Sylhet District, 30 people, including a constable, were injured. In Satkhira District, three Policemen were injured.In Bogra District, Police arrested five cadres. At least 41 people including eight Policemen were injured in clashes with Jamaat-e-Islam (JeI) and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) during the second day of dawn-to-dusk countrywide hartal (shut down) enforced by JeI-ICS on February 6, reports The Daily Star. At Siddhirganj in Narayanganj District, JeI-ICS cadres equipped with iron rods and sharp weapons swooped on Police. At least 15 people including three Policemen suffered injuries during the clash. At Paribagh in Dhaka city, Badrul Hasan (30), an Assistant Superintendent of Police, was injured during a chase and counter-chase between the law enforcers and the stick-wielding pro-hartal cadres. Police arrested two cadres from the spot. In Rajshahi city of Rajshahi District, nine cadres were arrested for attacking the Police. At Batiaghata in Khulna District at least 15 people including two Policemen were injured during a clash between JeI-ICS cadres and the Police. At Raiganj in Sirajganj District, at least 10 people, including two Policemen were injured as JeI-ICS cadres clashed with them. The injured Policemen are Tazul Huda, officer-in-charge (OC) of Solonga Police Station, and Ali Farid Ahmed, OC of Sirajganj Highway Police.

In Satkhira District, Abdul Hamid (48), an Awami League (AL) activist died of his injuries seven hours after he was abducted and beaten up allegedly by JeI-ICS cadres in Madhabkathi area. In Sylhet District, 40 people, including two Policemen, were injured as JeI-ICS cadres clashed with Police on Sylhet-Sunamganj road. Over 300 JeI-ICS cadres blocked the road and vandalized some rickshaws and battery-run three-wheelers. As Police tried to disperse them, the blockaders hurled brick chunks at law enforcers and exploded several crude bombs triggering a running battle. In Bagerhat District, 15 people, including five Policemen, sustained injuries in a clash between JeI-ICS cadres and law enforcers. In Khulna District, a clash between ICS cadres and Police at Sonadanga in Khulna city left at least 15 injured. The clash sparked when Police resisted the cadres who had blocked a road with logs. In Cox’s Bazar District, five Policemen were injured as JeI-ICS cadres clashed with the law enforcers at Bazarghata. In Rajshahi District, JeI-ICS cadres severed the tendons of the right leg of an activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of AL at Bagha sub-District. Armed with machetes, about 10 JeI-ICS cadres ambushed Mizanur Rahman, a second-year student of Shah Doula Degree College, when he was going to his village home in Chhatari. Police said JeI-ICS cadres hurled petrol bombs and cocktails at the outpost, prompting the Police to open fire. In Dhaka city, soon after Juma prayers, JeI-ICS cadres in droves unleashed a reign of terror near Motijheel AGB Colony kitchen market, torching four private cars and seven motorcycles. At least 11 people were injured when Police fired rubber bullets to disperse the attackers. Police arrested 14 cadres, two of them bullet-hit, from the spot. The deceased were Motiur (22), Raihan (21), Abdus Sattar (24), Saiful Islam (21), Sajib (22) and Russel (20). In Nilphamari District, the motorcade of Awami League (AL) lawmaker Asaduzzaman Noor came under attack from JeI-ICS cadres. The attack on the motorcade triggered a clash between JeI-ICS cadres and AL activists near Ramganj Bazar leaving five AL acvtivists killed in the clash. The deceased was identified as Mansur Prodhaniya (24), president of ward no 3 unit of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) the student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI). He was a student of a private university of city’s Uttara area. Seven of ICS cadres also sustained bullet injuries. Police arrested cadres at the clash. Abul Kashem (30), a member of the Railway Security Force, died when two young people exploded a crude bomb on his face on the platform at the Kamalapur Railway Station of Dhaka City. Two youths who were carrying the bomb were also injured in the blast. Police said two youths — Alam (18) and Aminul (16) — were entering the railway station through the rail tracks from a level crossing. As the two youths reached beat No 17 of the station, railway security guard Kashem challenged them. Sensing danger, Aminul hurled the bag containing the bomb at the face of Kashem and soon it went off with a big bang, killing Kashem on the spot and injuring Alam and Aminul themselves.
