according to sources in different law enforcement agencies, the Garo Pahar area in Nalitabari sub-District of Sherpur District had become a safe haven for Indian group United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), reports The Daily Star. ULFA had been active in the area between 2000 and 2010 under the leadership of its military commander Masud Ranjan Chowdhury. In December, 2010, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered seven abandoned mines, one grenade, 97 bullets, detonators, Indian currency, walkie-talkies, and documents of ULFA. RAB on July 17, 2010, arrested Masud Ranjan Chowdhury and his associate Pradip Marak. On April 8, 2015, the duo were awarded life imprisonments and fined BDT 20,000. They are currently serving their terms in a Kishoreganj prison.

Police on February 20 busted a den of Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) in Dhaka city’s Mohammadpur area and recovered a large cache of bombs and explosives, reports Dhaka Tribune. Six hand grenades, two saucepan bombs and several bombs wrapped in tennis balls were recovered. aPolice said that of the explosives, some 3 to 4 kilograms are so powerful that if those are blasted about 100 to 150 people within the radius of 30 to 40 yards will be killed.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police said they recovered three bags stashed with five walky-talkies, two repeaters, some explosive gel and chips in the canal from Diabari Canal at Uttara in Dhaka on June 25, reports The New Age. Police said they are suspecting the same group– that threw away a cache of arms last week– might have dropped the transceivers and other explosive substances in the water in the wake of recent ‘block-raids.’ The gel and the chips are used to make improvised explosive devices, Police said. The walky-talkies were made in Japan while the repeaters were made in USA, said Uttara Crime Division Deputy Commissioner, Bidhan Tripura. He said the origin of Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and other chips could not be confirmed.

Joint Security Force led by Army brought to end an unprecedented hostage situation rescuing 13 people who include Indian and Japanese citizens almost 12 hours after gunmen stormed the popular restaurant. Around 53 people, including several Policemen, were injured in an exchange of gunfire between Police and gunmen who stormed a Spanish restaurant on July 1 night and took the people inside hostage. One militant was arrested in the incident. According to US-based SITE Intelligence Group, Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility of the attack. The deceased Police officers are Rabiul Islam, Assistant Commissioner of Detective Branch of Police and Salahuddin Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge Banani Police Station. Joint Security Force recovered 20 bodies during a search on the compound of the Spanish restaurant. Most of the victims were killed brutally with sharp weapons. The five, arrested in Dhaka city's Uttara and Adabor areas in separate incidents, include a trainer, an explosives expert and a finance coordinator, according to Mufti Mahmud Khan, Director of RAB's legal and media wing.Of the arrestees, Maulana Abdul Hakim Faridi alias Sufian, 40, and Razibul Islam alias Razib, 29, were captured in Uttara. While, Gazi Kamrus Salam Sohan alias Abdullah, 27, Sohel Rana alias Khadem alias Muazzin, 23, and Abu Saleh alias Liton alias Huraira, 42, were held in the city's Adabor. Sohan, a former student of Mirzapur Cadet College, completed B.Sc. in electrical and electronics engineering at Islamic University of Technology in Gazipur.
