International Crimes Tribunal–2 (ICT-2) registrar AKM Nasiruddin Mahmud said on January 20 that ICT-2 is to deliver its verdict in the case against expelled Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) leader Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, a war crime accused, also known as Bachchu Razakar, on January 21 (today). This is the first instance in the country's history that a war crime accused is going to receive punishment, for his alleged involvement in crimes against humanity during the country's Liberation War in 1971. Azad, former leader of Islami Chhatra Sangha (ICS), student wing of JeI, is facing eight charges of crimes against humanity, based on eight incidents that left at least 12 people dead and two women raped in Faridpur District, in 1971.

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) made history on January 21 by sentencing Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) leader Maulana Abul Kalam Azad to death, in its maiden judgment, for genocide and crimes against humanity during the Liberation War, reports The Daily Star. The 65-year-old fugitive, also known as Bachchu Razakar, was found guilty of killing 14 Hindus, raping two women, torturing two other persons and setting homes ablaze in Faridpur District, his birthplace. The judges said in the verdict “In dealing with the charges we have found that the accused Abul Kalam Azad alias Bachchu Razakar himself had physically participated being accompanied by his armed accomplices to the commission of crimes and as such he held criminally responsible for the direct commission of crimes proved.” Azad was sentenced to death for four of the charges, although found "guilty beyond doubt" in seven.

At least three people were killed and many injured across the country on February 5 as Jamaat-e-Islam (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres enforced a dawn-to-dusk hartal (shut down) protesting the war crimes trial of its leader Abdul Quader Mollah, reports The Daily Star. In Chittagong District, two ICS cadres (Imran Khan and Afzal Hossain) and Shafiqu, a worker of Youngone factory were killed during a clash with Police. Police arrested 15 ICS cadres from the District.In capital Dhaka, the JeI-ICS cadres exploded 8-10 crude bombs when police obstructed them. A Police constable, Nur Nabi, was injured and 52 cadres were arrested from the city. In Comilla District, one JeI-ICS cadre was injured in Police firing. In Rajshahi District, about 10 cadres were injured in a clash with Police as they were intercepted by the law-enforcers. In Khulna District, Police arrested seven cadres from the Khulna city. In Sylhet District, 30 people, including a constable, were injured. In Satkhira District, three Policemen were injured.In Bogra District, Police arrested five cadres. In Natore District, Police arrested one cadre. In Laxmipur District, Police arrested four cadres. In Gazipur District, Police arrested 15 cadres.

Shahbagh movements in the Dhaka city which entered its sixth day on February 10 which was started after the countrywide violence by JeI-ICS cadres against the war crimes trial, as some former and present cricketers took to the stage and chanted slogans to support their cause the agitating youths were even more determined to continue their movement. Protestors said they were already angered by the recent countrywide violence by JeI-ICS cadres and the verdict against JeI leader Abdul Quader Mollah clearly. These two incidents have forced the young generation to take to the streets, they said, adding that the wave of Shahbagh movement has vibrated the whole nation. Demonstrations also took place in Tangail, Khulna, Magura, Manikganj, Rangpur, Pabna, Munshiganj and Natore Districts.

In an apparent bid to create panic among the people united on the demand for death penalty to war criminals, Jamaat-e-Islam (JeI) and Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) rampaged through different parts of Dhaka city on February 12, reports The Daily Star. The JeI-ICS cadres carried out hit-and-run assault at Police, leaving at least 30 injuries. 73 JeI-ICS cadres were arrested in the city. Meanwhile, at least 65 people, including 14 Policemen, were injured in clashes between JeI-ICS cadres and the law enforcers in Satkhira, Noakhali and Khulna Districts on February 12. In Satkhira District, seven Policemen were wounded in attacks by the JeI-ICS cadres and Police arrested 103 cadres in the District. In Noakhali District, at least eight JeI-ICS cadres were injured when they fought a pitched battle with Police. In Khulna District, at least 50 people, including seven Policemen, were injured when the JeI-ICS cadres clashed with law enforcers. Seven cadres were arrested after the incident on charge of attacking Police and obstructing law enforcers in discharging their duties.

Protesters stand in silence for three minutes raising their hand in the Shahbagh crossing in Dhaka city on February 12 afternoon pushing for death penalty for all war criminals, reports New Age. People from all walks of life indoors, at work and on the streets across the country stood in a silence for three minutes as the clock struck four on February 12 afternoon. Ministers, secretaries, lawmakers, Government and non-Government officials, and ordinary people from one end to the other of the country came out on the streets passing by their respective workplaces to express solidarity with the Shahbagh protest demand. Protesters in their thousands raised their hand on a countdown and kept silent for the three minutes. They broke the silence shouting ‘Jay Bangla, Jay Bangla.’ Protesters then filled the air with slogans such as ‘Phansi, phansi, phansi chai, Quader Mollar phansi chai’ (hang Quader Molla), ‘Ka te Quader Molla, tui razakar, (Ka for Quader Molla, you are a collaborator)’ ‘Ga te Ghulam Azam, tui razakar’ (Ga for Ghulam Azam, you are a collaborator).’

They said they would go home in elation if he was given death sentence or else they would stay there demanding the capital punishment. The protesters have vowed not to fall asleep till the verdict in the war crimes case against Sayedee is delivered. “Shahbagh is wide awake; Projonmo Chattar is wide awake. And we will remain awake,” declared Imran H Sarker, convener of Blogger and Online Activist Network that began the protest on February 5 demanding capital punishment to all war criminals.

At least 40 persons were killed as Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres clashed with law enforcers across the country on February 28 centering on the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) verdict that sentenced JeI leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee to death penalty on February 28 on charges of war crimes he had committed in 1971, reports New Age. Seven were killed in Rangapur District, six including four Policemen in Gaibandha District, five in Satkhira District, four in Thakurgaon District, four including one Policeman in Chittagong District, two each in Sirajganj, Cox’s Bazar, Chapainawabganj and Noakhali Districts and one each in Dhaka, Dinajpur, Moulvibazar, Natore, Bogra and Rajshahi Districts. More than 2,000 people were also injured in the clashes according to the Police and hospital officials. Most of the casualties are reported to have been caused by firing by the Police, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on September 5 indicted Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) leader Mir Quasem Ali on 14 charges, including murder, torture, abduction and confinement of people and complicity in crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of 1971, reports The Daily Star. Quasem Ali allegedly was a key leader of Chittagong District’s Al Badr unit and also featured prominently in the national Al Badr structure. Quasem Ali became the general secretary of Islami Chhatra Sangha, the then student wing of JeI, on November 7, 1971. The Islami Chhatra Sangha members formed the Al-Badr force to collaborate with the Pakistani military to commit genocide and mass killing during the war.
