A major tragedy has been averted by the Security Forces (SFs) following recovery of a huge quantity of explosives and other war-like stores from Lawngtlai District in Mizoram on May 4, reports Northeast Now. Two persons have also been arrested by the Assam Rifles (AR) troopers in connection with the recovery on May 4. “The Assam Rifles team along with police representatives raided the house and recovered Gelatin sticks – 59, Detonator – 49 and Cordex – 03 meter,” an official release from Assam Rifles stated. The release added: “The team had a specific information regarding storage of explosives and war like stores at a house in Lawngtlai (in Mizoram).” “Use of such war like stores could have endangered the lives of innocent people and led to various illegal activities. This recovery has prevented the loss of precious lives,” the AR added.

Police have seized heroin worth INR 30 million in the international market at Peducha under Kohima District in Nagaland on May 4, reports Northeast Now. A release on May 4 said the highway patrolling unit of the Kohima Police of Nagaland, during routine checking and frisking of vehicles at Peducha, intercepted one suspicious vehicle (Maruti Gypsy) and recovered 49 packets of suspected heroin weighing around 615 grams from it on May 3. The contraband valued at INR 30 million in the international market was found hidden in a specially modified compartment of the vehicle, Nagaland Police said. Two persons identified as Tarsus Khaisu (33) and Mateso Dearson (26) were arrested in this connection, Nagaland Police said, adding that later they duos were handed over to Sechü (Zubza) Police in Nagaland along with the seized drugs and vehicle.

On May 7, United Liberation Front of Asom - Independent (ULFA-I) claimed that it has sentenced two of its newly recruited cadres to death for allegedly being ‘spies’ of the Police, reports East Mojo. Issuing a statement, the outfit claimed that two youngsters, Dhanjit Das of Barpeta and Sanjib Sarma of Baihata Chairali, were given ‘death sentence’ after they were found guilty by the outfit’s lower judicial council on May 4 and May 5 respectively. However, this claim was denied by Assam Police. According to the statement signed by self-styled brigadier A.Z. Shironam Asom, Dhanjit Das who had fled from the Salman camp on April 24 and captured by ULFA-I a day later confessed to have passed sensitive information to Assam police. Likewise, Sanjib Sarma, who was detained in Myanmar, claimed to be confessed about joining ULFA-I on directions of Police officers and with the greed for money with the intention of passing the outfit’s internal communications to Police using modern technology so that ULFA-I commanders and cadres could be eliminated.

CM Sarma also reiterated his appeal to the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) for peace talks, stating that such ‘tejor faku’ (bloodshed) will not lead to any development. The National Revolutionary Front Manipur (NRFM) has claimed responsibility of the two blasts at Nagamapal and Khurai in Imphal on May 5 and 6 respectively, reports East Mojo on May 9. NRFM stated that RK Birendra, an executive engineer of agriculture department, on whose residence one of blast took place, had made boastful remark and conducted activities that portrayed the militant outfit in poor light and demeaned the cause of the outfit. The militant outfit also maintained that they take utmost precaution to avoid any collateral damage while carrying out their action and abstain from violence. The NRFM has appealed to owners of properties damaged in the blasts to pardon them. Earlier, South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP) has reported the two incidents on May 7.

On May 30, members of Wancho tribal community of Tirap-Changlang-Longding (TCL) region staged a protest march in Longding District of Arunachal Pradesh against unlawful taxation and abduction activities by Yung Aung faction of National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K-YA), reports East Mojo. This development came in the backdrop of a spree of kidnappings in the past few months. The Gaon Burah (village headman) of Chatong village, Tingpho Lukham, was the latest victim of abduction. He was later released on May 30. The angry protestors raised slogans against the alleged atrocities of the NSCN-K-YA, holding placards and banners with inscriptions such as “No Extortion”, “No Kidnapping”, and “No More Humiliation”. According to news sources, NSCN-K-YA have adopted a new strategy to extort money by abducting innocent villagers in the TCL region. On May 30, a construction worker identified as Pankaj Mohato was killed in a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast inside the Community Hall at Sapam Mayai Leikai of Khongjom in Thoubal District of Manipur, reports Hindustan Times. Four other construction workers who were staying at the community hall and involved in the construction of a water supply tank were also injured in the explosion. The four injured workers were identified as Aroop Mandal, Apoorva Mandal, Rajesh Ramaanik, and Souvik Patra.
