On February 1, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) busted an international smuggling network of arms, ammunition and explosives operating in northeastern states and arrested a key accused identified as Lalngaihawma from Aizwal District of Mizoram, reports The Hindustan Times. NIA said “Lalngaihawma was working in collusion with various operatives, including insurgent groups situated across the international border.” The NIA further added, “As part of their conspiracy, they had already distributed such terror hardware to various individuals in India and abroad. These illicit weapons & explosives are suspected to have been used in violent terrorist acts and criminal activities across different regions.”

On February 5, Assam Rifles seized a huge cache of explosives and detonators along the Sangau Pankhua road in Lawgtlai District of Mizoram after establishing a Mobile Vehicle Check Post (MVCP) and arrested two persons identified as Siama Thanga (50) and Amengi (40), reports India TodayNE. The confiscated items included confiscated 150 kilograms of explosives, 1800 detonators, and more than three kilometers of Cordex. Reports stated that the seized explosives were intended for resistance forces in Myanmar.

A number of sand miners on February 6 narrowly escaped as Kuki militants armed with sophisticated weapons attacked them at the Tumulok area of Imphal East District, reports The Sangai Express. Kuki militants came down from the hill of Molham Kuki village toward the sand mining area located in between Nongdam Tangkhul and Tumukhong Meitei village and fired indiscriminately toward those who were engaged in mining sand at around 1.10 pm. On hearing the indiscriminate firing, Tumukhong villagers who were mining sand in the area ran in different directions to save their lives. Kuki militants further came down to Tumulok and fired several rounds of bullets on the vehicles which were left behind due to the attack and tried to torch the vehicles. Locals of Nongdam Tangkhul came out and intervened saying that they would not allow such activities in Naga inhabited areas. Following the intervention, Kuki militants left the place and climbed up the nearby hill. Tyres of three trucks used in carrying sand were damaged after Kuki militants fired on the vehicles.

A Police officer said, “The Government Railway Police arrested them at Dharmanagar railway station on Tuesday night. The group includes two women, Salma Begum (23) and Tahira Begum (42), along with a minor girl named Samina. They were identified as residents of Amtali village in the Moulviganj police station under the Basirhat district. The GRP handed them over to Tripura Police yesterday.”

On February 8, Anup Chetia, the General Secretary of the pro-talk faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-PTF) while speaking at the sidelines of peace talks between the independent faction of ULFA (ULFA-I) and the state government, said that after the peace pact between ULFA-PTF and the central government, the people of the state now are keen to know what will be the move of Paresh Baruah led ULFA-I. Chetia added "We have seen one thing that ULFA (I) leader Paresh Baruah has never disagreed to part of the negotiation or rejected...but the demands of ULFA (I) should be respected by the Indian government and should come forward to bring the outfit to the negotiation table." Chetia also urged Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to take the initiative so that they can start the negotiation process between the ULFA-I and the Government.
