According to Daily Excelsior, two soldiers died in an encounter with two suicide squad (Fidayeen) cadres of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) in the Baramulla district on June 1. The two terrorists laid an ambush near the Subsidiary Training Centre (STC) of J&K Police at Sheeri in Baramulla, and opened indiscriminate gunfire when an Army convoy began passing through the spot at 1305 hours. The duo also directed heavy volume of gunfire on STC, killing one police constable, Anchal Singh, and injuring six others. Sources said that one of the Army buses was aggressively targeted by the terrorists killing one soldier and wounding 10 others. Both the terrorists were also subsequently killed in the gun-battle. LeT spokesman, Abdullah Ghaznavi, told Daily Excelsior that the incident at Sheeri was his group’s Fidayeen attack on the Army convoy as well as STC of the J&K Police. He claimed that five police personnel and six soldiers of the army were killed and 15 more injured. He confirmed that both the suicide squad cadres were killed in the operation. Spokesperson at Army's 15 Corps Headquarters, Lt Col A. K. Mathur, disclosed that only one soldier, besides a Police constable, had died in the encounter. He said that both the militants were shot dead by troops of Rashtriya Rifles.

A suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) operative held near the Bangladesh border in April was shown as arrested by police in Hyderabad in connection with the May 18 bomb blast in the city’s Mecca Masjid, reports Deccan Herald. Nayeem alias Sameer was earlier in the custody of Mumbai police and was brought here on a transit warrant. He was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days. Sameer was one of four suspected LeT cadres held by the Border Security Force (BSF) near the Bangladesh border in April while they were trying to sneak into West Bengal. Later, he was handed over to Mumbai Police for his alleged involvement in bomb attacks on local trains. During a narco-analysis test, Sameer reportedly told Mumbai Police that he had transported RDX to Hyderabad, officials sources said. This was the second arrest by the Special Investigation Cell of city police which is probing the bomb blast. Earlier on May 25, police arrested Shoaib Jagirdar, a close associate of Sameer, from Jalna in Maharashtra. He is now in judicial remand.

On June 12, a suspected Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant was arrested from near the Azadpur Sabzi Mandi in north Delhi, reports Times of India. Identified as Mukhtar Ahmed Khan from Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir, the militant was carrying about 1.5 kilograms of RDX, a timer and two detonators. Delhi Police sources said that Khan was scheduled to go to Pakistan by the Delhi-Lahore bus on June 13 to meet LeT commanders based in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). Police further said that the explosives seized from him were meant to cause bomb blasts in Delhi at the behest of LeT commander Abu Alqama. Khan was supposed to hand over the explosives to another LeT operative in Delhi before taking the bus to Lahore. Khan revealed to the police that he initially worked for LeT for money but later gained the confidence of Abu Musab alias Tahir and Abu Hamza, the district commanders of LeT in Srinagar. Khan had visited Pakistan in January 2006 and attended the LeT camp at Muzaffarabad in PoK and received three month-training in the use of weapons and explosives.

Two persons were killed in an ambush by terrorists near the crowded Iqbal Market in the Sopore town of Baramulla district on June 15, according to Daily Excelsior. The terrorists, who had taken position behind a parked car in a narrow alley, lobbed a hand grenade and then directed a volley of gunfire on the convoy, which was en route to Bandipora. The driver of a targeted vehicle was killed and four soldiers in two vehicles sustained injuries. Even as the troops retaliated, both the terrorists managed to escape from the incident site. At Chinkipora, nearly a kilometer from the ambush site, one Constable of the Central Reserve Police Force was hit when he was watching the convoy from the third floor of his camp. He is reported to have died on the spot. When the firing subsided, five civilians were also found injured. Officials said that the duo, identified as Abu Zarrar and Abu Qittal, were believed to be members of a lately infiltrated group of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), which is reported to have claimed responsibility for the ambush.

Ruling out the presence of al Qaeda in Jammu and Kashmir, the Northern Command’s General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Lt. Gen. H. S. Panag, said in Udhampur on June 17 that nothing has been established so far to corroborate reports about the terrorist group’s operatives in the State, according to Daily Excelsior. "Much has been said by the print and electronic media about al Qaeda’s presence in Jammu and Kashmir but nothing has been established so far to corroborate these reports,” said Panag. He informed: "I would say we also have no records in the past about al Qaeda operatives having being found during counter-insurgency operations in the State. Only one odd case was reported about one al Qaeda militant of Afghanistan long back," adding that after investigation it also turned out to be untrue. He also ruled out al Qaeda’s relations with terrorist groups operating in Jammu and Kashmir — Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM). "We are only aware of al Qaeda’s strong relations with JeM and LeT in Pakistan," he observed. In Pakistan, al Qaeda has strong relations with LeT and JeM, whose cadres they train and assist them in the operations against the Government, the Northern Command chief said, adding they work in co-ordination in Pakistan, which is a major threat to the establishment.
