Four Kolkata (West Bengal) based businessmen have received extortion calls from the terrorist outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM), which is now headed by Amir Reza Khan, who hails from the city and was one of the masterminds of the 2002 American Center attack, reports Times of India. The outfit has demanded billions from the four entrepreneurs and have threatened them to pay up or face a fate like that of former Khadim’s company chief Partha Pratim Roy Burman, who was abducted in 2001. The calls were traced to Dubai, Karachi and Nepal. According to intelligence sources, the IM is in a desperate bid to raise money. It made similar calls last months to several industrialists and developers in Mumbai (Maharashtra), Surat (Gujarat) and Chennai (Tamil Nadu). Claiming that IM chief Amir Reza Khan is behind the threat, the sources say that the modus operandi suggests the role of the D-Company headed by fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

Both the terrorists belonged to Uttar Pradesh and were returning to the country from Bangladesh when they were arrested by the SFs. "We suspect that they were returning to India via Bangladesh after getting training in Pakistan," a Union Ministry for Home Affairs (MHA) official said. The two suspected terrorists were being interrogated by central security agencies at an undisclosed location. Their names were yet to be revealed by the security agencies.

Terrorist outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM) has set up bases not only in Karachi in Pakistan, where its top leaders Riyaz and Iqbal Bhatkal are currently located, but also has safe houses in Gulf countries, Nepal and Bangladesh, interrogation of arrested IM cadres has revealed, reports Economics Times. Such bases normally serve to house runaway IM leaders who operate from there to keep the local jihadi network alive. They also offer temporary shelter to IM recruits during transit between Pakistan, where they receive their terror training, and India. As per matching versions of IM operations put out by Salman, arrested by the Uttar Pradesh (UP) Police from Sidharthnagar District, Amjad Khawaja, arrested by the Hyderabad Police and Shahzad, arrested from Azamgarh District in UP, IM cadres were receiving training at the same facilities used by the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), both in Karachi as well as other parts of Pakistan. However, the focus of IM training is mostly bomb-making, unlike LeT cadres who are trained to fire sophisticated arms and use guerrilla tactics. However, IM cadres, recruited from various Indian locations including Azamgarh, Bhatkal village near Mangalore in Karnataka and Hyderabad, receive their training from serving as well as retired officers of the Pakistani Army, who are referred to as ‘Bada Saheb’ and ‘Chhota Saheb’. Incidentally, this is part of the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI)-engineered ‘Karachi Project’ unveiled first by American terror suspect David Coleman Headley. Under the ‘Karachi Project’, Indian terror kingpins recruit jihadis from here and send them across to Pakistan for training. Once trained, these cadres ex-filtrate through the Jammu and Kashmir border or enter India via Nepal, Bangladesh or UAE. Further, Salman revealed that the outfit’s new recruiting grounds are now in South India. Salman claimed that hit hard by the arrest of its cadres between 2008 and 2009, the IM has launched a fresh recruitment drive. Investigators said that the terrorist outfit has traded its traditional bases in Uttar Pradesh for South India. Investigators also adds that one of the reasons for the IM to shift down south could be several arrests from the Azamgarh District base and a constant scrutiny by intelligence agencies.

The Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), Pakistan’s external intelligence agency, continues to maintain links with the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), the terrorist outfit responsible for November 26 Mumbai terrorist attacks (also known as 26/11), and Islamabad is reluctant to take action against its leaders and its network, several eminent United States (US) scholars and experts of South Asia have categorically told US lawmakers, reports Times of India. Attending a special Congressional hearing on March 11 on 'Lashkar-e-Toiba and the growing ambition of Islamic militancy in Pakistan', Congressmen unanimously expressed concern that despite best of the efforts by the Obama administration, the ISI continues to maintain links with LeT and that Pakistan is not taking decisive action against the terrorist outfit. Testifying before the Congressional committee, Marvin G. Weinbaum, from the Middle East Institute -- a Washington-based think tank, said the ISI is believed to continue to share intelligence and provide protection to LeT. Eminent Pakistani scholar Shuja Nawaz too conceded that the relationship between the ISI and LeT has stayed overtime. "The LeT's emerging role as a trans regional force that has broadened its aim to include India and perhaps even Afghanistan, by linking with the Students Islamic Movement of India or SIMI and the Harkat-ul-Jihad al Islami or HUJI of Bangladesh poses a serious threat to regional stability," Nawaz said. Nawaz is currently the director, South Asia Center, The Atlantic Council of the United States.

The central investigating agencies on March 12 confirmed Indian Mujahideen’s (IM) role in the bomb blast at Pune's German Bakery on Feburary13 that killed 17 persons and injured more than 70, reports DNA. The agencies have conveyed this to Maharashtra's Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and have named the absconding Bhatkal brothers - Iqbal and Riyaz - for the operation. According to the report, Riyaz Bhaktal oversaw the entire operation from Dubai. Although the central agencies have asked other investigating agencies to identify local operatives who assisted in carrying out the blast, Police teams in Pune have failed to make any arrests. Although 16 IM cadres had been arrested in the last two years from the outfit's north and south modules, the Police believe that fresh recruits were used for the German Bakery blast. And that is why it is difficult to identify them. An officer said that the perpetrators of the Pune blast were not from the State and had received support from sleeper cells in Pune. According to security officials, while Iqbal is based in Dubai, Riyaz is living in Karachi in Pakistan.

A joint Police team of the Punjab and Delhi Police neutralised a module of the Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), an outfit backed by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), by arresting three militants from Punjab and Delhi, reports Times of India. Two suspected BKI militants, identified as Daljit Kumar alias Deepak of Baltana from Mohali District and Purshotam Singh alias Bunty from Rajoura in Patiala District, were arrested at the Zirakpur-Patiala road near Zirakpur in an operation conducted by the Mohali Police and the Special Cell of Delhi Police in the night of March 18. The third militant of the outfit, identified as Karwinder Singh, a native of Ropar, was arrested in Delhi on March 19. The arrests indicate that BKI is being pressured, just like Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorists hosted by Pakistan, by its ISI handlers to revive terrorist activities. Senior Superintendent of Police, Mohali, Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that two France-based terrorists identified as Purshotam Singh of Matheri and Goldy of Ghel, both from Ambala District, were funding the terrorists activities. INR 100000 recovered from the two militants was sent by them. Police also recovered a .455 bore revolver with three cartridges from the two militants. Purshottam Singh, a proclaimed offender, is reportedly one of the accused involved in the assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, but could not be arrested. He had also tried to eliminate former Haryana Chief Minister Bhajan Lal before Benat Singh's assassination. Preliminary interrogation of the accused revealed that they were planning to carry out blasts in the region to create terror, the cops said, adding that more revelations are expected in the coming days. A case against them was registered at the Zirakpur Police Station and they were produced in the Derabassi court from where they were sent to Police remand till March 21.

Security was beefed up at Marwar Junction on March 23 after authorities received two separate letters containing threats to blow up the station, reports PTI. While a postcard threatening to blow up the station was received by the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Police Force (RPF) at the junction this morning, a similar letter was found outside the station master's office, Superintendent of Police (GRP-Ajmer) Veerbhan Ajwani said. Written in Hindi, the postcard bears the name of Indian Mujahideen (IM) at the end and mentions the date 24 for the strike but does not specify the month, he said. However, taking no chances and assuming the date to be 24th of March, security has been tightened at the station, the official said.
