Meghalaya Police busted a camp of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) near Dabalgre on the foothills of Durama on the borders of South and East Garo Hills Districts on August 10, reports The Telegraph. South Garo Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) Anand Mishra said the camp had been formed deep in the jungles for "regrouping and training" of GNLA's new cadres. In recent months, several GNLA cadres, including its front-rank leaders, had come out to surrender while the Police intensified their operations against the outfit and other militant groups active in the Garo hills. "Leftover GNLA leaders like Sohan D. Shira, Baichung Momin, Baltush and Kartush were residing in the camp along with around 20-odd new recruits who were brought together for training in Durama jungles," Mishra said. "On being hit, all the cadres ran helter-skelter into the jungles. After a general search of the area, an SBBL (smooth bore breech loading) gun, many detonators, gelatine sticks and identity cards were found from the place," Mishra said.

Several North East insurgent groups have called for a total shutdown in the region on August 15 while announcing their decision to boycott the Independence Day celebration, reports Nagaland Post on August 11. A joint statement of the United National Liberation Front of Western South East Asia (UNLFWESEA), Coordination Committee (CorCom), Manipur; Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) appealed to the people of the region to boycott the Indian Independence Day. The insurgent groups also announced for a total shutdown on August 15 from 1 a.m. till 6 p.m. They further asked all public and private transportation to stop their services, shops and markets to down their shutters and educational institutions to remain closed. “Essential and humanitarian services will be exempted from the total shutdown”, the statement added. The insurgent groups said “some citizens of India will witness the fun fare of the celebration but the reality was that people of the region are always suppressed”. “The continuous racist attacks on our WESEA people in mainland India, the latest being the humiliating incidence of Monika Khangembam of Manipur proves the vulnerability of the people of our region in spite of carrying the stamp of genuine citizenship and passport”, the joint statement said. “Our target is the Indian occupational forces, not a single civilian. But, the occupation forces use civilians as shields and even trick the innocents to walk on to danger and threat to life”, the rebels alleged. The groups also appealed the people to avoid public gatherings and students to stay at home to boycott the Indian National celebrations.

As soon as inputs were received, the East Khasi Hills District Police and Magistrate made a surprise check at 2pm at the high security cell and seized knotted ropes of 16.5 ft in length made of synthetic woolen blankets, two improvised iron hooks with a makeshift rope ladder, several torn strips of blankets meant for preparing the ropes, which were meant to help them in the escape. Kharkrang informed that the accused persons denied that they had any jail break plans but the Police are questioning them to unearth their modus operandi for escape.

Police said that a team raided the house of Sohan’s mother at Sasatgre on August 18 and found the rebel leader’s mobile phone. “We had information about Sohan and a few militants taking shelter in his mother’s house.
