The Karachi Police arrested Mohammed Junaid, allegedly the ‘operations chief’ of Harkat-ul-Mujahideen Al-Almi (HuMA), on April 3 after a gun battle, said senior police official Raja Omar Khitab. Police launched a raid as Junaid and an accomplice were shifting weapons from a hideout in the city, according to Daily Times. The two allegedly opened fire targeting the police, before Junaid was arrested while his accomplice escaped. Police recovered one AK-47 assault rifle, two grenades and a pistol from their possession. Khitab informed that Junaid was wanted in connection with several attacks on the police and a 2003 bombing at a private club in Karachi that injured nine people. The Government had offered a reward of Rs 500,000 for information leading to his arrest.

Five activists of the outlawed Sunni group Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP) were sentenced to death by an anti-terrorism court in Karachi on April 4 on charges of killing a police constable and an under-trial prisoner in an ambush on a prison van near the city courts in 2002, according to Daily Times. According to the prosecution, Sabir Ali Waseem, Faizal Pehalwan, Mazharul Hasan, Muzamil and Malik Tasaduq had opened fire on a jail van that was escorting the prisoners back to Central Prison Karachi after a hearing at the sessions courts at the City Courts Complex on February 28, 2002 in the limits of Bohra Pir police station. Police constable Shakeel Arshad and under-trial prisoner, Saqib, were killed in the ambush.

Allama Turabi along with his son and two guards was traveling in his car on Abul Hasan Ispahani Road when the bomb planted on a fruit pushcart exploded, Town Police Officer of Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Asif Ejaz Shaikh, disclosed. The bomb containing half a kilogram of explosives was activated by a remote control, he added.

Traffic remained suspended on the national highways in Baloch-dominated areas of the province as a result of their blockade on the second consecutive day on April 6 in protest against the besieging of the residence of Balochistan National Party chief Sardar Akhtar Mengal and the arrests of his three bodyguards in Karachi, according to The News. Vehicles reportedly did not ply on the Quetta-Karachi, Quetta-Taftan and Quetta-Sibi routes. Reports added that protesters had blocked the highways by putting up barricades across them in different parts of the province, including at Kolpur, Lak Pass (Mastung), Kalat, Khuzdar and Naushki.

At least 57 people, including prominent religious personalities, are reported to have died and more than 50 people sustained injuries in a suspected suicide bomb attack at Nishtar Park in Karachi on April 11. The blast occurred at a stage erected in a park where religious leaders and hundreds of faithful were offering evening prayers on the occasion on Prophet Mohammad's birth anniversary. Prominent religious personalities, including Tehrik Awam Ahli-Sunnat chief Haji Mohammad Hanif Billo, Itikhar Bhatti, Abbas Qadri, Akram Qadri and Hafiz Mohammd Taqi, died in the blast, according to The News.

'Information we have received from hospitals and police suggest that the death toll is 57,' Salahuddin Haider, spokesperson for the Sindh Government, told Agence France-Presse. One or possibly two attackers climbed onto a wooden stage in the Nishtar Park as around 50,000 people offered sunset prayers. They then approached the Sunni clerics and detonated powerful bombs, officials said. Rauf Siddiqi, Home Minister of the Sindh province, disclosed that security forces had checked the stage before it was handed over to the organizers. Meanwhile, riots in the nearby areas of the blast site were also reported. Sources informed that two petrol pumps, one fire tender and several cars were set ablaze by the enraged crowd.

The activists made the demand in a resolution during a demonstration in Khyber Agency. They also demanded that the Sindh Governor, Chief Minister and Cabinet resign for failing to ensure security and for not having arrested the terrorists involved.

The body parts of the suspected suicide bomber of the Nishtar Park incident will be brought to the DNA laboratory in the federal capital Islamabad for identification, Interior Secretary Syed Kamal Shah told Dawn on April 12. While confirming that it was a suicide bombing, he added that investigation agencies had taken into custody three unidentified bodies, a head and some other human organs from the site of the bomb blast in Karachi. The police have detained 12 suspected terrorists in connection with the April 11-suicide bombing at Nishtar Park in Karachi, Sindh Inspector General of Police, Jahangir Mirza, told reporters on April 16, according to Daily Times. "The suspects are being interrogated and I am hopeful that we are close to a breakthrough," said Mirza. The Government will introduce administrative reforms in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and under these reforms the political administrator will be abolished soon, he said.
