August 13 reported that there is a massive conspiracy to destabilise Karachi, Pakistan’s only economic hub by jihadi (holy warrior) outfits which only recently decided to regroup and reorganise themselves to launch a series of high-profile killings and bomb blasts. Previously, Daily Times reported that the assassination of an MQM legislator, Raza Haider, was the work of Qari Zafar of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) which resulted in killing of more than 95 persons in various targeted killings and organised attacks in Karachi. Al-Qaeda presence in Karachi was confirmed which was upset with the counter-terrorism moves by the Government. Only recently, a drone attack killed one of their top commanders and number three, Mustafa Abu al-Yazid aka al-Masri. Interestingly, for a precision attack on a certain target anywhere, a SIM-like chip has to be fixed at the spot for the missile from the drone to hit the target, which could only be possible if someone fixed that chip. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operational panel rallies up which leads to the conclusion that Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) who already has a vast network of operatives and assets inside Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) is closely working with its American counterpart to "hound and destroy" at least, al-Qaeda in Pakistan.

Three militants were killed and several others injured when militants of Mullah Nazir group, a break away faction of Hakeemullah Mehsud led Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), and TTP clashed in Mantoi area of South Waziristan in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) in the night of August 17, reports Dawn. According to local people, the clash resulted in the death of two supporters of Hakeemullah and one of Mullah Nazir. Official sources said that a militant, identified as Hafiz of the Hakeemullah group, was wanted by the Nazir group because of his alleged involvement in the killing of seven supporters of Nazir group. This is the first known clash between members of the two rival militant factions of South Waziristan in many years. ‘Commander’ Nazir is often regarded as anti-TTP especially because he had maintained an undeclared truce with the Army during the entire operation against TTP.

The Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) confirmed on August 18 that the death of its ‘chief’, Muhammad Tahir Farooq, popularly known as Tahir Yuldashev who had been killed in a drone attack in South Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) in 2009, reports Daily Times. An Urdu pamphlet distributed by ‘Jandula Studio of Harkat-e-Islami Uzbekistan’ said that Tahir’s blood would not “go waste” and his followers would continue to wage jihad (Holy War). Yuldashev was reported to have been killed in a strike by a US drone in Kaniguram town of South Waziristan on August 27, 2009. A website run by the IMU group announced the death of their leader and posted an image of his dead body. The website also displayed two images of Yuldahsev, who was described as “Shaheed Muhammad Tahir”. The site also named Usmon Odil as Yuldashev’s successor. Odil, in his own online address to followers, confirmed that Yuldashev had been killed on August 27, 2009 in a US drone attack. The IMU denied reports of Yuldashev’s death for almost a year, Odil said, because its members “were waging stepped-up battles in Afghanistan and especially in Pakistan against the enemies of Islam,” he said. “This sorrowful event occurred unexpectedly, and the IMU leadership, departing from the norms of sharia for jihad, decided to keep the information secret,” he added.

26 persons, including a former member of the National Assembly (NA) were killed and 40 others injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up inside a mosque in Wana town of South Waziristan in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) at 3 pm (PST) on August 23, reports Daily Times. Pro-Government cleric Maulana Noor Muhammad was delivering a sermon in the area’s biggest mosque when the attack occurred. “Maulvi Noor Muhammad was among the 26 killed in the suicide attack inside his madrassa adjacent to his mosque,” Wana assistant political agent, Jamal Azmat said. No outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack so far. However, ‘foreign elements’ who were earlier forced out of the area are believed to be behind the attack. Maulana Noor Muhammad was opposed to the presence of Uzbek militants and had provided support to dislodge them. Slain Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leader Baitullah Mehsud had allowed the “displaced Uzbek militants” to stay in Mehsud areas, which triggered a strong reaction from the tribesmen from the Ahmedzai Wazir areas. The former MNA had also played his role in brokering a peace deal in the past. The cleric was associated with the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (Fazlur Rehman fraction).

A bomb blast at a meeting of tribal elders on August 23 killed seven persons and injured another seven in Khumas village about 10 kilometres east of Parachinar of Kurram Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), reports Daily Times. “Seven people have been killed in a landmine blast,” said area administrator Syed Musaddiq Shah. Another administration official said seven people were injured in the blast, which occurred during a jirga between two tribes. Kurram has for three years been a flashpoint for violence between Shia and Sunni Muslims. More than 4,000 people have died in outbreaks of sectarian violence between the groups since the late 1980s. The Army earlier carried out a months-long operation in the area, pounding militant hideouts with jets and helicopter gunships.
