The central committee member of PFN, Bed Prakash Acharya, told Nepal News that the Maoists assaulted them because they expressed their reluctance to participate in the insurgent’s functions. The incident has raised serious question about the sincerity of the insurgents in the 12-point agreement, he added.

At least four Maoists and two civilians were killed after Maoists attacked security bases in the Butwal and Kapilavastu districts on April 7-night, according to Himalayan Times. The insurgents reportedly entered Butwal from Basantapur jungle, Laxminagar and the upper part of Jyotinagar and Chure jungle region in Sukhhanagar, targeting the area police office, the western regional police office training centre and the army training centre at Golpark. Four bodies of Maoists have been recovered from the site. Ashok Thapa, a resident of Butwal 6, was also killed while two others sustained injuries in the attack.

Protests continued on the second day of the four-day nationwide strike against King Gyanendra being organised by the seven-party alliance. The district post office in Lalitpur was reportedly set ablaze and students at the Tribhuvan University in Kirtipur ransacked the Dean’s office and briefly held several officers hostage. Public transport, shops and schools across the country were reportedly shut. Presidents of Government and corporation employees’ unions said they have extended support to the movement to safeguard their professional and trade union rights. They said employees of the Nepal Electricity Authority, various corporations and banking sectors stopped work on April 7 to express solidarity with the movement. A number of protestors were arrested in Jumla, Morang, Pokhara, Lamjung, Hetauda, Chitwan, Lahan, Kalaiya, Baglung, Charikot, Dipayal and Butwal. Normal life was also reportedly affected in the Surkhet, Rautahat, Gorkha and Tanahun districts.

Issuing a notice, the Kaski District Administration Office imposed a 9am-9pm curfew order in the Pokhara Sub-metropolis on April 9. Similarly local administrations in the Surkhet, Butwal and Chitwan districts on April 8 issued fresh curfew orders for their respective districts, while the administration in Nepalgunj has extended the existing curfew order by four hours. In Surkhet, local administration imposed a daytime curfew in Birendranagar municipality and some adjoining areas on April 8. In Butwal, the administration issued curfew orders from 7 pm to 5 am. Meanwhile, in Nepalgunj, the curfew period has been extended by four hours with effect from April 8 till further notice.

A protestor was killed when police opened fire at activists of the seven political parties in Banepa. Three others were critically injured in the firing. In Bara, two demonstrators were injured when SF personnel opened fire at the demonstrators. In Syangja, Nepali Congress district leader Kedar Kafle was critically injured when SFs opened fire. In Butwal, one person died at Traffic Chowk when the SF personnel opened fire while at Nawalparasi, four demonstrators were injured when armed police opened fire in Gaindakot.

Himalayan Times reports that a anti-King protester was killed and 36 others injured when police opened fire at Parasi Bazaar, Maheshpur Chowk and Bhrikuti Chowk in Nawalparasi district on the seventh day of the general strike called by the Seven Party Alliance (SPA) on April 12. Following the death, demonstrators torched the offices of Cottage and Small Industries and District Education Office. They also set ablaze houses of the chairman of Nawalparasi DDC and the mayor of Ram Gram municipality. The District Administration Office has clamped curfew in the municipality from 6 pm to 4 am. In Syangja, at least 30 persons were injured in police action. In Pokhara, the police disrupted a rally staged by the Professionals’ Organisation and arrested 239 demonstrators. In Dipayal, at least 50 persons, including two children, were hurt when police resorted to baton-charge. In Sarlahi, at least 10 protesters were wounded when police intervened in a bicycle rally. In Gaighat, more than 30 demonstrators were injured in police action while in Jhapa, at least 28 demonstrators were hurt in police action at Chandragadhi. In the Sindhupalchowk district, all banks have shut down indefinitely to back the ongoing agitation. Rallies were also reportedly held in Rautahat, Baglung, Nuwakot, Palpa, Bhairahawa and Hetauda.

Security force personnel arrested more than 100 demonstrators, including 53 women and 14 journalists, from a rally at Baglung bazaar, the district headquarters of Baglung. In Arghakhanchi, normal life was affected throughout the day as vehicular movement remained disrupted, industries and other organizations remained closed due to the general strike. Thousands of villagers took out an anti-government rally at the district headquarters of Sandhikharka. Similar demonstrations were organized in Dhankuta, Ilam, Sindhupalchowk, Janakpur, Panchthar, Kaski, Jhapa, Taplejung, Dhading, Dhangadhi, Parbat and other districts.

In the capital Kathmandu, police action on protestors at the Chabahil-Chuchepati area left 62 injured. In Kalaiya, at least 24 agitators were injured when police intervened in a rally. In Narayangarh, four agitators were injured when SFs opened fire at them at Ratnanagar municipality. In Birgunj, over a dozen activists were injured when police intervened in a demonstration. In Ramechhap, three protestors were injured in police action at Manthali. In Itahari, SF personnel fired dozens of rounds at demonstrators, injuring 24. Six police personnel were also injured in the clash. In Nepalgunj, 20 demonstrators were injured in police action.
