A suspected Naxal [Left Wing Extremist (LWE)] was killed in an exchange of fire with Security Forces (SFs) in dense forest of Bijapur District on January 4, reports Times of India. "The skirmish took place late in afternoon in forest between Puvarti (Sukma District) and Kondapalli villages under Basaguda Police Station limits of Bijapur," Bijapur Superintendent of Police (SP), K L Dhruv said. A joint team of Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) – a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) specialised unit, District Reserve Group (DRG) and local Police had launched the Counter-Insurgency Operation in the jungles of Basaguda and Awapalli, he said. While SFs were cordoning off a restive pocket on Bijapur-Sukma border, they came under heavy fire from a group of armed naxals leading to a heavy gun-battle, the SP added. Special Director General (SDG) (Anti-Naxal Operations), D M Awasthi, said that the operation was “intelligence based” and the recovery of the Indian Small Arms System (INSAS) Light Machine Gun (LMG) was very significant for the Chhattisgarh Police”, adds Indian Express. Officials also told that the recovery would bring in valuable information because this is for the first time they have recovered an INSAS LMG, the bearings on it will give them information of the supply chain.

FiveCommunist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres, including two ‘commander-level’ cadres, were killed in two separate exchanges of fire during an operation launched by Chhattisgarh Police in Narayanpur District on January 10, reports The Indian Express. Senior officials, however, said that one District Reserve Group (DRG) trooper was killed in the first exchange of fire with the Maoist cadres. Teams with close to 400 Security Forces (SFs) entered the jungles in an area that is home to CPI-Maoist military company number two. D M Awasthi, Special Director General, anti-Maoist operations, told The Indian Express, “The operation was launched on a specific intelligence input about the presence of CPI-Maoist cadres in the area. In the first exchange of fire in the morning in Irpenar, four CPI-Maoist cadres were killed. One trooper was also hurt and evacuated, but he unfortunately passed away.” Intermittent firing continued. In the second exchange of fire, this time in the adjoining Kanker District’s Koylibeda area, one CPI-Maoist cadre was killed and an AK-47 recovered from his possession. The CPI-Maoist cadres killed in the first exchange of fire have been identified as Tirupati, ‘Divisional Commander’, East Bastar division, Ratna Markam, ‘medical in-charge’, company number 6, Shyamu Yadav of company number 6 and Mangalram Salam, a Janmilitia member from Irpenar. The body recovered in the second encounter has been identified as that of Roshan, ‘divisional commander’ of the North Bastar division. “It is clear that there has been a big loss to the CPI-Maoist cadres in this encounter. We have recovered the bodies, but our personnel have narrated stories of the CPI-Maoist cadres dragging away other members of their party under the cover of Light Machine Gun (LMG) fire. This indicates that these could be senior cadre,” Awasthi added.

The Jana Varjan SamabeshPrajameli (public meeting) was attended by inhabitants of at least 15 villages in the region. “In the absence of security forces and DVF (District Voluntary Force) jawans, Maoists enter some remote villages and start torturing the villagers. Sometime they even rob the villagers their belongings,” said a villager. “If security is tightened in these Maoistprone areas, then they will not dare to enter these places to trouble the innocent villagers,” stated another villager. Meanwhile Police said it will analyse the situation and take proper step. “Attending a large gathering here (Jagdalpur), the villagers of Tulsi, Mahupadar, Dundipadar and Kirmiti (Odisha) allege that a lady along with some other Maoists is torturing them. We have intensified antiMaoist operation and deployed some forces in those regions. Very soon we will neutralize the Red Rebels who are active in the area”, said Bastar (Chhattisgarh) Superintendent of Police (SP), RN Dash.
