An Army soldier and an infant were killed in heavy mortar shelling by the Pakistan army while three others including two civilians and a jawan were injured along the Line of Control (LoC)in twin border Districts of Poonch and Rajouri on July 17, reports Daily Excelsior. Official sources said that Pakistani troops started heavy mortar shelling and firing with automatic and semi-automatic weapons targeting several forward defence locations and civilian areas in Manjakote, Balakote and Mendhar sectors along LoC in Rajouri and Poonch districts at 7.30 am. Indian troops gave befitting response to Pakistan’s ceasefire violations at all the places. A mortar shell fired by Pakistan army struck an Army bunker in Tarkundi area of Manjakote sector in Rajouri District in which an Army jawan, identified as Naik Mudassar Ahmedattained martyrdom while another soldier, identified as Naik Firdous Ahmed was injured. Another mortar shell fell on roof of the house of Mohammad Kafeel at village Barhuti in Dadiana area of Balakote sector of Poonch District killing nine year old female child, Sajida Kafeel daughter of Mohammad Kafeel. Two more civilians including Shah Begum (54) and Sharief Ahmad, both residents of Naika Panjgrain were injured in mortar shelling in Manjakote sector of Rajouri District.Report adds that the escalated tensions along the LoC prompted Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) Lieutenant General AK Bhat warning his Pakistan counterpart Maj Gen Sahir Shamshad Mirza that though India was sincere to maintain peace on LoC, it reserves the right to retaliate appropriately. Heavy shelling forced the district administration to close down Government schools, located close to the LoC while cross-LoC bus between Poonch-Rawlakote route was suspended for second consecutive week in view of shelling and tensions on the LoC, keeping 55 citizens of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) stranded for more than a week, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Dr Mandeep K Bhandari said. He added that a Contingency Plan has been put in place to help the border dwellers.

Daily Excelsioradds that following three days of intense shelling and firing by Pakistan army in twin border Districts of Rajouri and Poonch, Indian troops on July 19 decimated nine posts and bunkers of Pakistani troops, which were engaged in targeting civilian areas including the educational institutions to cause more casualties. “A major counter attack against Pakistani troops was necessitated across Rajouri and Poonch districts along the Line of Control (LoC) to silence the enemy guns, which were targeting civilian population and schools. Huge damage has been caused to Pakistan army,” official sources said. They said: “enough and far more damage than what we suffered has been inflicted upon Pakistan army in all parts of the LoC across Poonch and Rajouri districts, where heavy mortar shelling and firing with automatic weapons continued for third consecutive day today”. India on July 20 accused Pakistan of "deliberately targeting" villages and school children in ceasefire violations across the Line of Control (LoC), which remains volatile with the two armies exchanging heavy fire on a daily basis in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K), reports The Times of India. Indian Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) Lieutenant General A.K Bhatt told his Pakistani counterpart Major General Sahir Shamshad Mirza over the hotline to exercise "strict control" over his troops and instruct them to refrain from any "nefarious activities". During the telephonic conversation at about 3.30pm on July 20, Bhatt said Pakistan army troops had deliberately targeted villages and also fired at school children in the Nowshera sector of Rajouri District when they were being evacuated from the area on July 18. "The Pak army DGMO was told such activities did not behave any professional army. The Indian Army, as a professional force, takes due care to avoid targeting of civilians and the Pak Army was expected to do the same," said Army spokesperson Colonel Aman Anand. The Pakistan DGMO was also informed about "the spate in ceasefire violations which also included "calibre escalation (use of heavy weapons), coupled with incidents of sniping and attempted infiltration" by terrorists backed by his force. Over 240 ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the LoC have been recorded this year.
