One militant was killed and others forced to retreat as the Border Security Force (BSF) thwarted an infiltration attempt by six Pakistani militants at the International Border (IB) in Bobiya area of Hiranagar sector in Kathua District on October 20, reports Daily Excelsior. This was the first infiltration attempt by a big group of Pakistani militants on the IB post September 29 surgical strikes by the Indian Army inside Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), which had led to tension on the Line of Control (LoC). “It was a ‘forced infiltration’ attempt by six militants, all of whom resorted to indiscriminate and heavy volume of firing on the night patrol vehicle of the BSF, which was led by a Company Commander, and tried to infiltrate. However, alert BSF jawans thwarted the attempt by retaliating very effectively,” Inspector general (IG) BSF, Jammu Frontiers, DK Upadhyaya said, after visiting the spot in Hiranagar sector, where the infiltration attempt took place. Upadhyaya said the militants, who had clear backing of the Pakistani Rangers, opened indiscriminate and random firing with RPGs (Rocket Projectile Guns), as is done in the ‘forced infiltration’ (fire and sneak-in). However, the BSF jawans, who were maintaining high alert along the International Border, immediately understood the militants’ strategy and gave befitting response to heavy volume of firing. The exchange of firing lasted for few minutes after which the militants fled back to Pakistan taking along with them the body of one of their dead colleagues. The BSF jawans, in the morning, watched the video footage of entire encounter and saw the militants retreated to Pakistan lifting one of their colleagues. While one of the militants was confirmed dead, one or two others might have survived with minor injuries. Upadhyaya said the involvement of Pakistani Rangers in the ‘forced infiltration’ was very much clear. “The militants were infiltrating from the spot, which was located between two posts of the Rangers, which clearly indicated that the Rangers were well aware of the infiltration plot, or, had rather, facilitated the plot,” he said, adding that the militants can’t come so close to the border without help of the Rangers.

Seven Pakistani Rangers and one militant were killed as Indian troops retaliated Cease Fire Agreement (CFA) violation by Pakistan along the International Border (IB) at Hiranagar in Kathua District of Jammu on October 21, reports Times of India. After the Rangers injured Border Security Force (BSF) jawan Gurnam Singh in sniper fire, BSF launched an aggressive retaliation marked by intermittent small arms and ‘area weapons’ fire. "We had to respond when they tried to prevent our efforts to rescue our injured jawan," BSF Additional Director-General (ADG) Arun Kumar said. The killing of the Rangers was part of a larger drive to prevent infiltration, which has seen the Army and paramilitary troopers foil determined efforts by the Pakistan Army to help terrorists cross over to India. BSF's ADG Kumar said that Gurnam and other BSF jawans were targeted because they had responded effectively to foil an attempt, captured by thermal imagers, to push terrorists into India on the intervening night of October 19 and 20 in the same area of Hiranagar. At least four terrorists were spotted as they moved along the IB. The BSF team, which comprised Gurnam, responded with full force, forcing terrorists to retreat and killing one of them. According to a BSF officer, thermal imagery showed the men on the Pakistani side carrying one person back. This, he said, was the terrorist killed in retaliatory fire by BSF.

The Border Security Force (BSF) has gunned down 15 Pakistan Rangers personnel and destroyed their two dozen Observation Towers and Border out Posts (BoPs)besides causing huge destruction to their set ups in the PoK [Pakistan occupied Kashmir] during the week, Daily Excelsior reported on October 28. Additional Director General of BSF Arun Kumar said the BSF has killed 15 Pakistani Rangers since the tensions flared up along the International Border (IB). He said several Observation Towers and BoPs of the Rangers have been razed to ground or damaged extensively in retaliatory firing by the BSF. Asserting that the way Pakistan shelling and firing was on, it was clear indication that the Pakistan Army has taken over the posts from the Rangers. “Firing and kind of ammunition used by Pakistan indicated that it was not their Rangers but army, which was firing upon Indian posts and forward locations,” he said. Kumar said the BSF has lost its third soldier after the sniping incident at Bobiya Post in Hiranagar sector of Kathua District in which Gurnam Singh was martyred followed by head constable Sushil Kumar and now Jatinder Singh, both of whom were killed at Abdullian in RS Pura. Three other BSF jawans have been injured, he added.Official sources said that Army has devised a new strategy to counter shelling from Pakistan side to save civilian population and own losses. The Army was now targeting and decimating Pakistani posts, which were raining mortars on civilian population. “Our troops are now going for the kill. They are decimating the posts of the Army across LoC [Line of Control] in Nowshera, Sunderbani, Mendhar, Balakote, Mankote and Tarkundi in twin border districts of Rajouri and Poonch, which were worst hit by mortar shelling, to avoid civilian casualties. After decimating the Pakistani posts, the Army was not allowing Pakistani troops to re-construct the posts by engaging them. In number of areas, the Pakistan army jawans have been either killed or injured when their posts were decimated while others have run far behind for cover,” sources said, adding this strategy of the troops has saved many civilian lives as they were targeting civilian population with heavy mortars and automatic weapons. This way, sources confirmed, a number of Pakistani Posts have been completely destroyed and Pakistani troops have abandoned those areas as there was no other cover for them. The shelling in some of the villages has stopped after decimation of these posts, they said.

The Border Security Force (BSF) foiled three infiltration attempts by heavily-armed terrorists, aided by cover fire by Pakistani troops, in Hiranagar sector of Kathua District, reports Daily Excelsior on October 31. “There were three attempts of infiltration by groups of terrorists which have been successfully foiled by the alert BSF troops in the face of danger to their lives,” BSF Deputy Inspector General Dharmendra Pareek said. Giving details, he said in the wee hours of October 29, a group of three heavily-armed terrorists attempted to sneak in from Hiranagar sector while Pakistan Rangers provided covering fire to them. However, BSF troops forced them to retreat by effective fire, he said. “On October 30 around midnight, again a heavily-armed group of three terrorists was detected by alert troops across the IB in another area of Hiranagar sector and they reached the vicinity of International Border, taking advantage of dead ground. They were kept under close watch. On effective fire of BSF, they took shelter in dead ground having thick wild growth,” Pareek added. He said the BSF troops spotted a group of terrorists in the evening of October 30 close to the International Border. He said that on being exposed, the terrorists targeted BSF troops on duty by resorting to heavy firing but were forced to retreat by effective fire. “Once they were targeted heavily by BSF with accurate fire, the Pakistan Rangers came to their rescue and provided covering fire support to the militants for their safe withdrawal towards Pakistani villages,” Pareek said. “The terrorists were seen moving half-bending, crawling and running to save their lives towards Pakistan village of Abhiyal Dogra,” the DIG said.
