At least three more persons were killed while two others injured as fresh violence erupted in Kokrajhar District in the night of August 6, taking the death toll to 80, reports The Times of India. "The Bodo miscreants indiscriminately fired in Ranibuli village under Kokrajhar Police Station late on Monday night killing three persons and seriously injuring two others," Assam Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) L R Bishnoi said. Bishnoi said that the three killed belong to Lakhiganj of bordering Dhubri District. Following the incident, a curfew has been clamped again in Kokrajhar District while indefinite curfew continues in the neighbouring Chirang District where there are fresh reports of arson. Some houses were burnt down there but the timely action of Police prevented any major violence, Bishnoi added. One person has been arrested in this connection from Chirang. The army continued their flag march in the morning of August 7 (today) in the three Districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri, hit by clashes between Bodo tribals and the minority community, which started on July 20.

a Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) delegation rushed to New Delhi to call on Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and place the Council’s demand that no inmate from the relief camps in the four violence-hit districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Dhubri and Bongaigaon should be rehabilitated without getting his/her credentials ascertained, The Hindu on August 7 reported. BTC Deputy Chief Executive Member Khampa Boragoyari told The Hindu that the Council delegation — led by its Chief Executive member Hagrama Mahilary — would be placing the demand of rehabilitating only those who possess land certificates, and have their names in the voters’ list in the first phase of rehabilitation, before the Union Home Minister. “Those inmates of relief camps who don’t have land certificates but have their names in the voters’ list should be kept in the relief camp for now, while those inmates, who neither possess land certificates nor have their names in the voters’ list, shouldn’t be rehabilitated in areas under BTC. We have already conveyed this stand of the Council to the State government,” he said. The BTC was apprehensive regarding “outsiders” being brought in to the BTC areas during rehabilitation

former Bodo Liberation Tigers (BLT) cadres also added to the carnage. Muslim settlers fleeing en masse have clearly said that it was not Bodo villagers, but heavily armed Bodo youths in army fatigues, that attacked their villages and set ablaze their houses states the report. Further, following the exodus of Muslims from the Bodo-dominated Kokrajhar and Chirang Districts to the Muslim-dominated Dhubri District led to a reactionary move. Bodo villages in Dhubri as well as pockets of Muslim-majority Chirang, Gossaigaon and Bijni were attacked. As the Muslim settlers of Bodoland scurried for life to the Chapar and Bilasipara areas of Dhubri, armed cadres belonging to radical Islamic organisations in lower Assam reportedly entered the Bodoland Territorial Areas District (BTAD) and set ablaze village after village.
