The International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) on August 2 directed the defence lawyer for Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) leader, war crimes accused, Delwar Hossain Sayedee to complete the cross-examinations of the Investigation Officer (IO) by August 8, reports UNB Connect. On April 8, the IO dealing with the crimes against humanity during the Liberation War started making his deposition before the ICT-1 against Sayedee. The tribunal recorded the statement made by the IO who during investigation found Sayedee as a listed Razakar, an auxiliary force under the Pakistan occupation army, at Parerhat in Pirojpur District during the 1971 Liberation War, had perpetrated the crimes against humanity in collaboration with the occupation forces. The cross-examination of the IO by the defence counsel began on April 25.

A Union Parishad (UP) Chairman, two UP members and eight others were injured in an attack by militants at UP office in Atghoria sub-District of Pabna District on August 4, reports The Independent. The attackers ransacked chairs, tables and other valuable furniture of the office while Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) cards were being distributed among the poor families. A group of terrorists numbering about 20-30 attempted to snatch away VGF cards from the hands of UP chairman, members and card holders. The attackers led by President of Akkdanta Union Jubo League (AUJL), Yunus Bahadur, Alauddin, Batchu and others demanded 50 per cent card for them. When the UP chairman and locals resisted, the militants attacked them.

the sixth witness, Shafiuddin Mollah, of the prosecution while he was being cross- examined at the ICT-2 by the defence counsel said that JeI leader Abdul Quader Mollah was directly involved in the Alubdi genocide during the Liberation War. The witness said on April 24, 1971 Mollah and his accomplices shot and killed about 370 innocent people in his village with the help of Pakistani occupation army. He added Mollah and his accomplices then went on a rampage, looted many houses of the village and burnt down many of them.

Abdul Momen (71), an eyewitness told the International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) on August 6 that former Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) lawmaker Abdul Alim ordered the killing of nine Hindus in Khetlal sub-District of Joypurhat District during the Liberation War (1971) and their bodies were buried by the river, reports The Daily Star. Momen, a former student leader and the first prosecution witness in war crimes case against Alim, also told the tribunal how Alim in a meeting during the war asked his followers to loot the properties of the Hindus. He also informed that Alim, the then Convention Muslim League leader, formed and led the Shanti Committee (a collaboration force of the Pakistan army) in Joypurhat and recruited Razakars (another collaboration force) at his home.

ICT-1 recorded the deposition of Parag Dhar, ninth prosecution witness against Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, for the second time, at an in-camera trial in the tribunal chamber reports The Independent. Salauddin was accused of crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971. The tribunal framed charges against him on April 4 for his involvement in 23 specific incidents of crimes against humanity. Chief prosecutor Advocate Ghulam Arieff Tipoo claimed that the witness did not mention important information in his first deposition, and sought to record Dhar's testimony for the second time. Later, he said the tribunal had accepted the prosecution's plea in the absence of the defence.

International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) on August 7 rejected the bail petition of war crimes suspect Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) Secretary General Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed, reports The Daily Star. Mojaheed was arrested on July 29, 2010, and has been indicted on seven charges of crimes against humanity, including murder, genocide and hatching a conspiracy to kill intellectuals during the Liberation War. Earlier ICT-1 had rejected Mojaheed's bail petition twice and the case was transferred to ICT-2.

Islamic Foundation's director general Shamim Mohammed Afzal told, "We have engaged our 40,000 staff having background in Islamic studies to monitor the mosques and see if the imams or khatibs are conveying our messages against militancy in line with the real Islamic teachings". He said the foundation staff would join the Muslim's weekly special juma congregations when the clerics were supposed to deliver lectures or sermons against religious extremism and militancy and highlighting the "spirit of love" against "hatred and violence". Islamic Foundation is an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Religious Affairs working to disseminate values and ideals of Islam and carry out related activities. The foundation has distributed several million copies of two books against militancy at the 270,000 mosques and over 100,000 madrasas.

Earlier, in compliance with the previous order, prosecutor Advocate Sultan Mahmud Simon submitted the progress report of the investigation against Kashem Ali to the tribunal. Mir Kashem Ali is now detained in the Dhaka central jail on charge of crimes against humanity during the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971. He was accused of committing crimes against humanity including murder, extermination, looting, repression, arson, confinement and deportation. According to the prosecution, Kashem Ali was also involved in plotting to thwart the trial of crimes against humanity at home and abroad. The prosecution sought arrest warrant against him on the plea that if he remained free, he might influence the investigation against him, prosecutor Advocate Rana Dasgupta said. He was threatening prosecution witnesses not to give depositions at the tribunal against the accused persons. Kashem Ali was arrested on June 17, 2012. The tribunal rejected his bail petition on June 19.

RAB officials claimed that the meeting was convened to plan “subversive activities” or “massive showdown” after the Eid vacation. RAB also recovered some books and leaflets of the banned organisation from the spot. Of the arrestees, four are teachers of school, college and private university; eight studies in different private medical and dental colleges, English medium schools and private universities; and 12 are university admission seekers. One youth among the arrestees is a stock market trader while nine works in different private firms and one is unemployed. Acting on a tip off, Detective Branch of Police arrested madrasa teacher Moulana Mohammad Yunus (48), at Fakirerpool in Dhaka. Police claimed that Yunus was one of the “top-most leaders of JeM's Bangladesh chapter”. His job was to recruit Rohingyas and locals of Cox's Bazar for his group and have them carry out JeM's activities in Bangladesh. Yunus had been carrying out his activity on the instruction of Saber Ahmmed, ex-principal of the madrasa, who has been living in Pakistan for the last few years.
