On June 5, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) condemned the Taliban's public flogging of 63 civilians, including 14 women, in Sar-e-Pul District of Sar-e-Pul Province on the social media platform X, reports Amu TV. Additionally, UNAMA called for respect for international human rights obligations.
The United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur on human rights in Afghanistan, Richard Bennettcondemned the flogging of civilians in Sar-e Pul and Ghor provincesstating that the acts violate Afghanistan’s obligations to prohibit torture and other forms of “cruel and inhuman punishment,” reports Amu TV. He said, “Once again, I condemn the widespread flogging of men, women, and children, this time in public in Sar-e Pul and Ghor for so-called ‘moral crimes’ (adultery, elopement, etc.).”
