Sri Lanka Government Information Department announces that social media platforms have been blocked as a short term measure to prevent the spread of false information following a tense situation erupted in Negombo city in Western Province, reports Colombo Page on May 6. Accordingly, access to social media applications, Facebook, WhatsApp, Viber etc. has been temporarily suspended.
Meanwhile, the curfew imposed in Negombo following a dispute between two people escalated into a tense situation on May 5, reports Colombo Page. Police Media spokesman Superintendent of Police Ruwan Gunasekara said the curfew was lifted at 7 am on May 6 as the town was calm after the situation was brought under control and curfew was imposed to prevent further incidents.
