Several internally displaced persons in Jaffna peninsula continued with fasting and picketing for the third day on January 7 in front of the additional government agent’s office in Tellipalai, reports said. They have been demanding since January 3 they be permitted to re-settle in their own areas, which have been declared High Security Zones (HSZs). The picketers said they would continue to protest on a rotating basis, until permitted to re-settle. More than 20,000 families were displaced in 1990 from the north in Jaffna district and the Sri Lankan Army has since then been reportedly occupying those areas.

The Sinhala chauvinist Janata Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) orgaanised a huge rally in Colombo, on January 8, protesting the peace talks between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Reportedly over 25,000 people participated in the rally. Speakers denounced the peace talks as a western imperialist conspiracy to divide country. JVP propaganda secretary Wimal Weerawanse said his party was working towards forging an Opposition alliance to launch mass agitation to dethrone Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Over two thousand Budhdhist monks staged a protest rally at Nugegoda Junction, Colombo suburbs, led by the ‘Federation of Bikkhus to Rescue the Motherland’, an umbrella organisation of Buddhist monks, on January 14, against the government for pursuing the peace process with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). They warned they would topple the Wickremasinghe government if it did not listen to their exhortations against a peace deal with the LTTE, media reports said. Speaking at the rally, well-known monk Kumburugamuwe Vajiranayaka Thero alleged that "western forces have joined together" to destroy Sri Lanka, under the guise of facilitating the peace process. National Bikkhu Front leader Kalawalgala Chandaloka Thero said the government made Sinhalese to believe the cease-fire was beneficial, while, in fact, the LTTE was utilising the same to establish its own system of government in the areas under its control. The protestors alleged the government was ‘plotting’ to divide the country and vowed to not let that happen. They asked the government to let the high security zones (HSZs) remain.

A cross-section of Tamils registered their protest, on February 19, against the alleged attack on Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) women cadres at Manipay on February 12. On that day, Army personnel and Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) cadres allegedly attacked eight LTTE women cadres with sticks and knives and had forcibly removed their waist belts when they were engaged in political activities. People in various parts of Jaffna district attended work sporting black badges. Also, black flags were hoisted over business establishments, co-operative organizations and vehicles, pro-Tamil sources said. Separately, similar protests were made in several parts of Batticaloa district and a massive procession was reportedly taken out in Batticaloa town. The protestors later submitted a memorandum to additional government agent V. Shanmugam and sent copies to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe, the LTTE and the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM). Condemning the attack, they said in the memorandum, "If these brutal attacks and violence by the military continue, we will continue our protests and bring all government activities to a standstill."

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) and the National Unity Alliance (NUA) and Buddhist monks participated in a massive protest march in Colombo, on March 10, against the ongoing peace process with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Two other opposition parties––the Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) and the Communist Party––did not participate in the joint opposition demonstration, reports said. Leader of the Opposition Mahinda Rajapakse, former Speaker Anura Bandaranaike of the SLFP, Wimal Weerawanse and Tilvin Silva of the JVP and Dinesh Gunawardene of the MEP led the demonstration. Protestors raised slogans asking the people to join hands with the opposition and defeat the government that is presently engaged in peace talks with the LTTE and said the government would divide the country.

A Tamilian, resident of Chenaiyoor, was killed, on April 18, in firing by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troops, who were controlling clashes that had erupted between Muslims and Tamils in the area. Thew death toll in the clashes has now reached to two. Earlier in the day another Tamilian was killed and 14 more wounded in a grenade attack. The firing took place immediately after Defence Minister Tilak Marapone left Muttur area after attending a conference at the Kattaiparichchan SLA camp, reports said. As reported earlier, three persons––a Muslim and two Tamilians––were killed in Muttur violence on April 17. A dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed on April 18 and relaxed subsequently has been re-imposed, reports said The Muttur meeting was presided over by Defence Minister Marapone. It was attended by Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarians R Sampanthan and K hurairetnasingham, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) leader and Cabinet Minister Rauff Hakeem and parliamentarians belonging to his party, besides other political leaders and senior officials of the Police and the Armed Forces. They discussed in detail the security measures that would have to be taken to control violence in the area. More government troops, police personnel and navy men would be deployed to strengthen the security there, reports added. The acting head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) in Trincomalee, Abdel Furkhan, too, attended the meeting.

On April 18, today, a dusk to dawn curfew has been imposed in Muttur town and its suburbs following sporadic clashes between sections of Muslims and Tamils. Several incidents of violence were reported in Palathoppur and Thoppur, on April 17, reports said. Three Muslims died in a shooting incident. Besides, two Tamil youth and three Muslims sustained injuries in the clashes and have been admitted to a hospital. The clashes follow the disappearance of two Muslim youth and the subsequent developments in which the mother of one of the youth committed suicide. Muslims allege that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) had abducted the youth. The LTTE and the Tamils, on the other hand, hold that it was the handiwork of those opposed to the peace process and wishing to derail it.
