Colombo Page quoting Military sources reports that the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) destroyed a Sea-Tiger base in Mannar on January 2. Similarly, SLAF launched an aerial attack on the Panichchankerni LTTE mortar positions in the Vakare region of Batticaloa district and destroyed several mortar and artillery gun positions. "With view to eradicating Sea Tiger capabilities in north of Mannar, SLAF Kfir jets this morning bombed several identified Tiger terrorist targets in Illuppaikadavai, Mannar, and Panichchankerni in Vakarai," Military spokesperson Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said. He added that the jets bombed targets after conducting surveillance in the area, and this particular Sea-Tiger base had been regularly used by the LTTE to launch deadly attacks on the Sri Lankan naval fleet on duty in the seas around the Gulf of Mannar. Meanwhile, the LTTE claimed that due to the aerial bombing, at least 15 people died and several others were injured. However, the Sri Lankan Government denied that the SLAF bombed civilian settlements. The Media Centre for National Security stated that SLAF Kfir jets carried out air strikes on a well-identified target - a Sea Tiger base in Illuppaikadaval, north of Mannar.

Colombo Page reported that in a response to LTTE’s continuing artillery and mortar attacks launched from forest areas east of Oddusudan and Puliyankulam in the Vavuniya district, Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) jets bombed two identified LTTE targets on February 20. “The targeted locations comprised artillery and mortars and a large concentration of Tiger terrorists at the time the Air Force bombed. One of the targets was a training base of the terrorists,” a senior air force official said, adding, from these points, terrorists had attacked Kokkukuduvai and Welioya areas with mortars recently. "We have taken two identified targets which were primarily a training camp of the LTTE and the other was a gun position from where they were targeting our troops," said Military spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe, according to Associated Press. Meanwhile, the LTTE denied any of their military assets were hit in the Vavuniya district and accused the SLAF of killing two civilians in the air strikes. The outfit’s spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan said, "The so-called training centre that the Sri Lankan state is saying is a civilian area, and until now we have recovered two bodies of civilians."

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) carried out their first ever air attack on the main Sri Lankan Air Force base in Katunayake, killing three air force personnel and injuring another seventeen at 12:45 am on March 26, the military said, reported Colombo Page. A light wing aircraft manned by the outfit dropped two bombs near the engineering section of the base, Media Center for National Security said. There were no damages to the fighter jets. The bombing has not affected the adjoining civilian airport, Bandaranaike International Airport and it is functioning normally since 3.30 a.m., officials said. Officials added that no security threats were prevailed to the commercial flights or passengers. The airport was earlier closed temporarily as a precaution and few commercials flights were diverted to destinations in India. Meanwhile, the outfit claimed responsibility for the attack warning more attacks to follow. "A couple of aircraft of Tamil Eelam Air Force have launched an attack on a Sri Lankan military airfield and hangars of military aircraft," outfit military spokesman Rasiah Ilanthiraiyan told Reuters, adding, "It is not only pre-emptive, it is a measure to protect Tamil civilians from the genocidal aerial bombardments by Sri Lankan armed forces." he added. He warned, "More attacks of the same nature will follow."

S. P. Thamilselvan, the political wing leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and its de-facto number two, was killed in a Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) air strike at dawn on November 2, reports Daily News. The SLAF MiG 27 and Kfir fighter jets which went into action on the morning took precise targets in the south of Kilinochchi resulting in the death of 40-year-old Thamilchelvan and five other outfit leaders. The SLAF spokesman Group Captain Ajantha Silva confirmed that both Kfir and MiG 27 fighter jets carried out operations in Thiruvaiaru, a location three kilometres South of Kilinochchi around 6am on ‘very reliable information’, identifying the location as a meeting place of LTTE leaders. "Our pilots had taken a precise target and it was further confirmed with the LTTE admitting that Thamilselvan was killed in the air strike," Silva said, adding, "Simultaneously the fighter jets also pounded a Black Tiger camp in the East of Iranamadu." Five other leaders ‘Lt. Col.’ Anpumani alias Alex, ‘Major’ Mihuthan, ‘Major’ Nethagy, ‘Lieutenant’ Adchgivel and ‘Lieutenant’ Vahakai Kumaran were also killed in the air strike. Their meeting place has now been confirmed as an international communications centre run by ‘Lt. Col’ Alex. It was also a centre for logistics, arms procurement, fund raising and operational matters. The LTTE posthumously promoted Thamilchelvan to the self styled rank of ‘Brigadier’ after his death. According to sources this is the first occasion the outfit has promoted one of their leaders to the rank of a ‘Brigadier’. It has also declared three days of mourning in areas they dominate. Meanwhile, the LTTE chief Prabhakaran has appointed P. Nadesan as the new Political Head. The LTTE’s military spokesman Irasiah Ilanthirayan said that Nadesan, who is currently in charge of Tamil Eelam Police, will be in charge of the two departments from now on.

The Sri Lanka Air Force on November 25 claimed to have destroyed a strategic communication centre in the Kilinochchi district, reports The Hindu. The Defence Ministry claimed that the LTTE had been coordinating its international terrorist activities from the place and it was known to be a highly secured palace where LTTE leaders frequently visit; and is equipped with sophisticated satellite communication devices. The fighter pilots have confirmed the target was effectively achieved. Quoting unnamed defence observers, the Ministry said the strike would have a devastating impact on the LTTE’s intelligence mechanism since its whereabouts were kept a top secret among LTTE heads. However, the LTTE disputed the claim and alleged that the Air Force bombed a civilian settlement in Tharmapuram killing three civilians and injuring seven others.
