Sri Lanka’s leftist coalition party, the National People’s Power (NPP) organized a protest rally in Nugegoda, a large, densely populated suburb of Colombo on March 23 demanding solutions to the existing crises, reports Colombo Page. The protest march followed by the rally with the theme "Let's end the 74-year curse - Join us to dismiss this tyrannical government" attended by many party leaders and party members and drew a massive crowd to the Colombo suburb. Nearly 50 persons including Police, Special Task Force (STF) and journalists were injured during the protest near the President's residence in Mirihana, Colombo, on March 31 reports Daily Mirror. Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said several vehicles including an army bus, jeep, three-wheeler, two traffic motorcycles were also set on fire during the protest. 45 persons including a female who engaged in the protest near the President's residence in Mirihana have been arrested, Police said.

Members of several opposition parties led by the Leader of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya Sajith Premadasa marched from near the Nelum Pokuna Theater to hold a peaceful rally at the Independence Square in Colombo on April 3, reports Colombo Page. However, they were prevented from entering the Independence Square by Armed Police who had set up barriers and roadblocks to block all entrances to Independence Square, causing a heated situation between Members of Parliament, including the Leader of the Opposition, and the Police.

The Sri Lankan youths protesting at the Galle Face Green in Colombo on April 13 have categorically rejected the invitation extended by the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa for a discussion to resolve the political and economic crises, the country is currently facing, reports Colombo Page. The youths protesting at the Galle Face Green in Colombo say that there is no other solution to their struggle except the resignation of the President, and the whole Rajapaksa family including the Prime Minister in the government. The Prime Minister on April 13 said he hopes to discuss the views expressed by the protesters to overcome the current challenges faced by the country and invited them to hold discussions. The protesters in an open letter to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa have firmly refused to meet him or anyone of the ruling party and stressed their two main demands that the 7th executive president Gotabaya Rajapaksa should resign immediately and all Rajapaksa family members including the Premier should resign from the government. The protesters said there will be no discussions without meeting the two conditions and vowed to continue the protest at ‘Gotago Gama’ until their demands are met as it is.

The Inter University Students Federation members commenced a protest demanding the resignation of all Members of Parliament (MPs), the President and Prime Minister, near the residence of the Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at Wijerama Mawatha in Colombo on April 24, reports Colombo Page. Some students climbed the wall to protest, while black flags were hoisted near the entrance to the official residence. Thousands of university students launched a protest march from Colombo Fort Railway Station on April 24 with the objective of joining the protest in the Galle Face Green which is continuing for the 16th consecutive day.

May 2, 2022, marks the 24th day of a continuous protest in front of the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo demanding the resignation of the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the Government, reports Colombo Page. A large number of people from various parts of the island were present at the protest May 2 as well. Protesters carrying various placards and national flags and shouting slogans called for the resignation of the President and the government displayed placards with various slogans around the Presidential Secretariat building. The protest was attended by religious leaders, youths, civil activists, artists, university students, journalists, disabled war heroes, trade union representatives, scholars and people from all walks of life from various parts of the country. People, including small children, have joined the protest and protesters have set up libraries, first aid units and media units.

The death toll rose to eight and over 200 persons have also been injured in Colombo and other cities on May 10 in the unprecedented violence in Sri Lanka that erupted after supporters of former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa attacked peaceful anti-Government protesters demanding his ouster over the country's worst economic crisis that led to acute shortages of staple food, fuel and power, reports The Tribune. Mahinda Rajapaksa (76), resigned as Sri Lankan Prime Minister on May 9 amid unprecedented economic turmoil, hours after his supporters attacked anti-Government protesters, prompting authorities to impose a nationwide curfew and deploy Army troops in the capital. The violence saw arson attacks on the homes of several politicians, including the ancestral home of the Rajapaksas in Hambantota. Video footage showed the entire house of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and his younger brother and President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in Medamulana in Hambantota city was burning. Prime Minister Mahinda's House in Kurunegala was also set on fire by protesters while a mob also destroyed D A Rajapaksa Memorial - constructed in the memory of the father of Mahinda and Gotabaya - in Medamulana, Hambantota. Chairman of the Imaduwa Pradeshiya Sabha A V Sarath Kumara (63) was killed following an attack on his residence on May 9. One person was killed following an attack on a popular hotel in Negombo. Multiple luxury cars worth millions of rupees were completely destroyed. Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Member of Parliament (MP) Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his security guard were killed in Nittambuwa on May 9. Eye-witnesses said that the people who had come with the MP to Nittambuwa shot at a group of people protesting against the attack on the peaceful protesters in front of the Temple Trees and the President's Office. A 27-year-old male died in the shooting incident. Two persons were killed in a shooting that took place at the Weeraketiya Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman's residence on May 9 night. A person succumbed to his injuries at the hospital in Colombo. The Colombo national hospital said at least 217 persons had been admitted for treatment.

Sri Lanka Police used tear gas and high-pressure water cannons to disperse thousands of protesters marching in the capital Colombo, on May 28, to mark the 50-day anniversary since the beginning of the ‘People’s Struggle’ against the government, reports Colombo Page. Police fired tear gas and water cannons when the protesters trying to enter Bank Mawatha near the World Trade Center to reach the protest site at the Galle Face Green removed barricades and clashed with the Police. Police detained three protesters but released them a short while later.

Large crowds from many parts of the island are heading to capital Colombo to participate in the massive protest on July 9, demanding that the Government including President Gotabaya Rajapaksa leave immediately, reports Colombo Page. Reportedly, after the lifting of the curfew imposed last night (July 8) to prevent the people joining the protest, crowds from outskirts have reached "Gota Go Village" struggle ground at the Galle Face green. Also, the protestors made a request to the station masters to run trains from Kandy and Galle to Colombo in particular and more than two thousand people gathered in those stations. In the meantime, it is also reported that some people who are unable to come due to the fuel crisis are also coming on foot to the Galle Face struggle ground. A large number of people are coming on foot from different areas like Gampaha, Ragama, Negombo, Kalutara etc. to participate in this struggle.

Four persons with cut injuries have been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital, on July 13, following a clash between two groups at the Galle Face ‘Aragalaya’ protest site, reports Colombo Page. The four injured are aged 15, 17, 18 and 20 years, and residents of Wellampitiya and Colombo 15 areas, and is said that they were attacked with a sharp weapon. The Colombo National Hospital has stated that nearly 100 people who were injured due to conflicts that occurred on various occasions have been admitted to the hospital for treatment since the start of the Gale Face struggle.
