A Government statement said that hours after the Colombo suicide attack, the "Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) positioned in the Sampoor area in Trincomalee launched an attack on the Navy in Trincomalee and the security forces have carried out an operation to deter further attacks by the LTTE." The military attack was continuing till last reports came in. Brigadier Samarasinghe informed that the latest strikes came after the LTTE fired on naval patrol craft off the eastern port of Trincomalee for a second day. He added, "The navy is heavily patrolling the area. They requested air support."

At least 17 Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) sailors and 50 Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres were killed as the SLN successfully repulsed an attempt by a cluster of the outfit’s suicide boats to destroy a heavy troop-carrying vessel - the 'Pearl Cruiser' - with 710 troops on board off the coast of Vettilaikerni on May 11, according to ColomboPage. The Navy in a retaliatory attack with the assistance of the Air Force destroyed five LTTE boats completely and disabled four others, killing 50 ‘Sea Tigers’ and forcing the fleet to withdraw. The Operational Headquarters stated, “In the firefight, Navy ensured the safety of the passenger craft and suffered the loss of one Dvora (P 418) with two officers and 15 sailors onboard. The clearing operations were continuing assisted by Air Force.” According to reports, two Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) monitors were on board the ‘Pearl Cruiser’ and the Dvora fast attack craft.

At least sixty-four civilians, including 15 children, were killed and eighty-six others were injured when a state-run passenger bus carrying 150 passengers was destroyed in a twin side-charger claymore mine explosion in the Anuradhapura district on June 15. The Government's spokesperson on security issues, Keheliya Rambukwella, blamed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) for the attack saying, "There is no iota of doubt that it is the LTTE." He also said, "There is no declaration of War, the peace agreement is on, but, we have to look at it very seriously", adding that the Government would not hesitate to take military action if needed, to safeguard the civilians. Subsequent to the attack, security forces (SFs) carried out an aerial attack in the LTTE-held Sampoor and Maullativu area and drooped bombs near the outfit headquarters of Kilinochchi on June 16, today. However, no casualties were reported in these incidents. Meanwhile, the LTTE denied its involvement and blamed the Government for the attack. Reacting to the SFs aerial attack, head of the outfit’s peace secretariat, S. Puleedevan, told Reuters, "If they are attacking Kilinochchi, they are showing they are ready for war."

Reuters has reported that Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) conducted air strike, using Kfir fighter jets, on known LTTE targets in the general areas (areas under Government control) of Verugal in the Trincomalee district where the outfit were keeping the sluice gate closed without allowing water to flow into thousands of Sinhalese, Muslims and Tamil villages since July 20. The SLAF spokesperson, Group Captain Ajantha Silva, said, "The government want to send irrigation engineers to the location. That is why we have taken action against identified rebel targets in that area. It was an aerial bombing raid." The Government accused the outfit of blocking water supplies to farmland in Trincomalee, where the Government and outfit both control territory. A Government statement, referring to the air raids, said the "limited operation" was conducted purely on "humanitarian grounds" to neutralize the disruptive forces it said were preventing free flow of water to over 15,000 families. However, S. Elilan, a top LTTE leader in Trincomalee, blaming the military, stated that Sri Lankan air force jets struck three times, wounding two civilians and destroying two houses. He added that the outfit suffered no casualties.

The Sri Lankan Navy and Air Force in a coordinated attack on September 17 sank a suspected Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) ship carrying weapons off the island's northeastern waters. Officials said the Navy spotted the unnamed vessel about 125-kilometres off Kalmunai in the Batticaloa district and ordered it to proceed to Trincomalee port for a search. An air force patrol craft was called in to bomb the ship when it ignored orders and opened fire on the navy. The Defence Ministry said in a statement, "When ordered by navy patrol craft to sail towards Trincomalee for checking, the suspected vessel opened fire. Tigers during the recent past were desperately trying to acquire weapons and ammunition from foreign countries, yet those moves were countered by law enforcing authorities in those countries and many Tiger inmates were arrested." Unconfirmed reports suggest that 12 to 15 LTTE cadres were on board the ship, when it sank.
