The Pakistan Army shelled mortars along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on January 1, reports The Hindu. A defence spokesman said, “Pakistan Army initiated unprovoked Cease Fire Agreement (CFA) violation by firing of small arms and shelling with mortars along the LoC in Krishna Ghati sector in district Poonch around 2100 hours on Wednesday.” Meanwhile, Indian Army retaliated to the shelling that took place on the LoC.

Three militants were killed on the Line of Control (LoC) at Khari Thrayat in Nowshera sector of Rajouri District in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on January 1, reports Daily Excelsior. Earlier, South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP) had reported about the incident, in which two Army personnel were killed in the encounter that followed during an infiltration attempt by suspected militants while Pakistan army violated the Cease Fire Agreement (CFA) on the LoC. The Army said Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Police launched joint operations in entire Nowshera sector to trace and eliminate the militants, who were suspected to be Pakistanis and had infiltrated into this side from the LoC for specific action like targeting defence installations and civilian areas. However, their plan was foiled by the troops who engaged the militants in the gun battle. Further, in past about one week, 13 Pakistan Army personnel have been killed in retaliation by the Indian troops during Pakistani CFA violations on the LoC, Army said.

Two Army porters were killed, one of them beheaded, while three others were seriously injured during violation Cease Fire Agreement (CFA) by Pakistan near the Line of Control (LoC) at Kasalian village in Gulpur sector in Poonch District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on January 10, reports Daily Excelsior.Pakistan army fired three to four mortar shells targeting five porters who were carrying logistics for the troops in forward area close to the fencing on the LoC at Kasalian in the morning. Simultaneously, the members of Border Action Team (BAT) of Pakistan were reported to have intruded into the Indian territory and beheaded one of the seriously injured porter.They took the head with them before returning to Pakistan.Another injured porter later succumbed to injuries sustained in mortar shelling taking death toll to two.The slain porters have been identified as Mohammad Aslam (28), and Altaf Hussain (23), both residents of Kasalian in Gulpur. Injured were identified as Mohammad Saleem (24), Mohammad Showket (28), and Nawaz Ahmed (35), all residents of Kasalian.Indian Army immediately retaliated Pakistan shelling and firing and was reported to have inflicted heavy damages on Pakistan side. Pakistan army resorted to very heavy mortar shelling and firing violating the Cease Fire Agreement (CFA) targeting the civilians in forward areas along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch sector in Poonch District of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on January 11, reports Daily Excelsior. Reports said Pakistan targeted forward villages of Digwar, Kalsian, Gulpur, Malti and surroundings in Poonch sector with long range mortar shells and automatic weapons. The Indian side retaliated very effectively to silence the Pakistani guns, leading to heavy exchanges of fire that continued till midnight. However, there were no reports of any casualties or damage on the Indian side. Casualties, if any, on Pakistan side couldn’t be ascertained.

Heavy firing from across the border was reported from Digwar sector in the District, according to the reports. Indian troops gave a befitting reply to the Pakistani guns. However, there were no reports of any casualties or damage on the Indian side. Army sources said that Pakistani Army opened unprovoked fire on civilian areas and Indian forward posts to which Indian Army retaliated befittingly with equal calibre. Forty-five terrorists were neutralised and 7 security force personnel were also martyred," the minister stated. "In addition, 132 cases of cross border firing from August 5, 2019, to December 31, 2019, and 41 cases of cross border firing between January 1 and February 15 this year along the international border and LOC in union territory of J&K were committed," Naik stated. The Indian troops retaliated leading to heavy exchanges. According to reports, Pakistan Army tried to push group of three to four armed infiltrators into the Indian territory to cause subversive activities under the cover of mortar shelling and firing. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Poonch, Ramesh Angral, said, a long-range mortar shell fell inside a house at village Karmara around 9.30 pm blasting the structure in which three members of a family were killed and another was injured. The dead have been identified as Mohammad Rafiq (58), his wife Rafia Bi (50) and 16-year-old son Irfan. Another family member Irshad Ahmad was injured. However, there were reports that effective retaliation from the Indian side resulted in killing of at least four Pakistani troopers and two others were injured. “The Indian Army retaliated firing and shelling to silence the Pakistani guns,” sources said adding that at least four Pakistan army personnel were killed and two others injured. The civilians killed in the shelling have been identified as Afrar Ahmad (7), son of Latief Ahmad of Gohallan Uri, Irshad Ahmad (48) of Sarai Baday, Tahir Ahmad Mir (36) of Sultan Daki and Farooqa Begum (36), wife of Bashir Ahmad of Balakote. The two Army soldiers were identified as GNR Sudoch Goush (23), and Hawaldar Hardaran Chandra (40), from 59 MED regiment posted at Rustam Post in Hajipeer sector. Two soldiers identified as Naik Satai Bhusha and sepoy Jon Dhale Rushikesh, both residents of Maharashtra, were killed while three others received injuries in the intense shelling in several villages and forward areas along the LoC in Tulail and Bagtore in Gurez sector in Bandipora District. An officer of the Border Guards identified as Sub-Inspector Rakesh Dhobal was killed and three others sustained injuries in CFA violation in Nowgam sector in Handwara in Kupwara District.

India, on November 14, summoned Charge d’Affaires of Pakistan high commission and lodged a strong protest over unprovoked CeaseFire Agreement (CFA) violations by Pakistani forces on resulting in the death of four innocent civilians and said it is highly deplorable that Pakistan chose a festive occasion in India to disrupt peace and perpetrate violence in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) through coordinated firing along the length of the Line of Control (LoC), reports Daily Excelsior.In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said India condemns, in the strongest terms, the deliberate targeting of innocent civilians by Pakistani forces. The statement said Charge d’Affaires of the high commission of Pakistan was summoned and a strong protest was lodged over unprovoked CFA violations by Pakistani forces, on multiple sectors along the LoC in J&K on November 13, resulting in the death of four innocent civilians and serious injuries to 19 others. India also strongly protested Pakistan’s continued support to cross border terrorist infiltration into India, including through supporting cover fire provided by Pakistan forces.
