Official sources said that about four to five militants came to the residence and demanded money from a local area development fund. When the minister refused to pay, one of the cadres fired in the air and subsequently fled.

Unidentified terrorists are reported to have shot dead Constable Gulzar Ahmed Rather at Tarigam in the Kulgam area of Anantnag district on January 16. He was nephew of the Communist Party of India–Marxist (CPI-M) legislator Mohammad Yusuf Tarigami, according to Daily Excelsior. Official sources said that barely an hour after terrorists shot at and wounded a CPI-M activist, Aijaz Ahmed Malla, at his village Sholipora in the same district. Subsequently, terrorists shot dead yet another CPI-M activist, Bashir Ahmed Rishi, not far away from the sites of the first two incidents.

Terrorists fired some gunshots towards the residence of Member of Legislative Assembly from Tral, Dr Ghulam Nabi Bhat, at Tral in the Pulwama district. Police retaliated and there was no loss of life or injury reported. In the same district, an improvised explosive device (IED) blast took place on the Amlar-Tral Road without causing any damage. Reports added that terrorists fired some rifle grenades towards a BSF formation at Batagund in the Tral area. Troops fired back and conducted a search operation but the terrorists managed to escape from the incident site. Unidentified terrorists also fired upon the house of People’s Democratic Party zonal president, Ghulam Hassan Bhat, at Babapora in the Shopian area of Pulwama district.

According to Telegraph, UGRA militants shot at Lepcha, a member of the local panchayat (local government body), after forcing him to open his door. Rajesh Subarna, Superintendent of Police of Darjeeling, said that the UGRA chief Ajay Dahal is understood to have taken part in the attack and was one of the three who had entered Lepcha’s room. The headless body of an unidentified person, believed to be the suicide bomber, was recovered from the incident site. At least eight vehicles, including that of the Defence Secretary, were damaged in the attack.

According to the report, a group of 70 Maoists, led by Sabita Kumari from Andhra Pradesh, had attacked the house of Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Nabin Hembram and were challenged by the SF personnel patrolling the village. Senior Superintendent of Police, Doda, Manohar Singh said Bhandari had been allotted three Personal Security Officers (PSOs), one by the Security wing and two by the district Police and as the area where he was shot dead was a far off village, it couldn’t be ascertained as to how many PSOs were accompanying him. "We have reports that one of the two district police PSOs, allotted to Bhandari, was not with him", he said, adding the terrorists fired bullets from a forest and escaped after killing him. None other was injured in the firing.
