According to Daily Times, two unidentified men opened fire outside a mosque in Karachi on January 30, killing a cleric belonging to the outlawed Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan (SSP; now known as Millat-e-Islamia) and his bodyguard. Maulana Haroon Qasmi, the mosque’s imam, and his bodyguard, Aqil Ahmed, were attacked on their way home after prayers at the Jamia Mamoor mosque on Tariq Road. In 2001, Qasmi’s father, Maulana Ishaq Qasmi, was shot dead near the site of January 30-attack. Consequently, hundreds of agitated SSP cadres, primarily seminary students, reportedly indulged in arson and damaged some vehicles and also attacked a police check post. City police chief Tariq Jamil said: "It appears to be sectarian killing as the deceased belonged to the banned Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan, but nothing can be said with certainly at the initial stage. We are investigating."
