Hundreds of tribesmen rallied to demand an end to US drone attacks, which they said were killing innocent people in the Tribal Areas. More than 2,000 protesters staged the demonstration in Miranshah, shouting slogans against the US and its Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), responsible for the missile attacks. Shop owners, students and other residents shouted anti-American slogans, and called for US Defence Secretary Robert Gates and the former CIA station chief in Islamabad to be brought to justice. “They should be arrested and punished by the courts in America,” said Abdul Khan, a student leader.

Three militants and a Policeman were killed and another official sustained injuries in a clash at Jamrud Road of Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on April 11, reports Dawn. Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Liaquat Ali said that a police party led by Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sajid Iqbal Khan was on a routine patrol when militants ambushed their vehicle near Hayatabad Industrial Estate at about 2am. At least 20 militants with sophisticate weapons opened indiscriminate fire on the Police van from the rooftop of a building in Khushaal Market. An unnamed Police source claimed that the militants belonged to Khyber Agency and one of them was from Lashkar-i-Islam (LI). The other two slain militants belonged to Qambarkhel and Kokikhel tribes, however, he did not disclose their names.

Only a day after a four-hour meeting between the heads of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States held to reset strained ties between the two agencies, missiles fired by US drones killed seven suspected militants and injured four others near Angoor Adda in South Waziristan Agency (SWA) of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on April 13, reports Dawn. An eyewitness said the militants had entered SWA from Afghanistan in two vehicles when four unmanned planes attacked them near the border village of Bagher. The drones fired missiles at the moving vehicles and a motorbike. In addition, Pakistan lodged a protest with the United States over the Angoor Adda drone attack, describing the continued drone raids as a ‘core irritant’ in counter-terrorism cooperation. “Pakistan strongly condemns the drone attack at Angoor Adda today. We have repeatedly said that such attacks are counter-productive and only contribute to strengthening the hands of terrorists,” Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir told US Ambassador Cameron Munter while lodging the protest with him. “Drone attacks have become a core irritant in the counter-terror campaign,” a statement by the Foreign Office said. However, the timing of the latest attack is also being seen as meaningful because it took place at a time when ISI Chief General Shuja Pasha was on his way home from Washington after talks with his counterpart, CIA Director Leon E. Panetta. General Pasha had called for limiting the scope of drone attacks to North Waziristan as a precondition for reviving the stalled counter-terrorism cooperation.

Hundreds of cadres of Hizbut Tehrir, a banned outfit, successfully held a rally outside Liaquat Bagh in Rawalpindi on April 17, reports The Express Tribune. The activists called for replacing the present Government system in the country with caliphate (an Islamic political system). They raised slogans like “Say no to democracy”, “We welcome Khilafah”, “Kufar nahi Islam chahiey” (We want Islam, not secularism). Police sources said that lack of coordination and the absence of senior Police officials at the scene were the main reasons why Police made no attempt to stop the rally. They did, however, arrest two of the more than hundred people participating in the rally. A statement issued by Hizbut Tehrir after the rally said, “Our members have braved the harshness of the traitor rulers for the sake of Allah and Rasul Allah. We pledge to continue our struggle against the American kuffar (infidels) and their agent rulers until Allah bestows us nasr (help).”

The participants belonging to a religious party in Quetta were led by Federal Lawmaker Maulavi Asmatullah. Organisers said between 1,000 and 1,200 people attended the rally. They also torched a US flag before dispersing peacefully. It was the first rally in Pakistan after the United States announced that Osama bin Laden had been killed in an overnight commando mission in Pakistan.

JI said the US had violated the sovereignty of its key ally by sending its own forces into Abbottabad to kill the al Qaeda leader. “Even if there was any sympathy for the Americans, it would dissipate after the way they crushed and violated our sovereignty and our independence,” JI chief Syed Munawar Hasan said, adding, “We have appealed to everyone to hold peaceful demonstrations on Friday on a very large scale. Our first demand is Pakistan should withdraw from the war on terror.”

People of various tribal regions have refused to form anti-Taliban lashkars (peace bodies) and demanded release of the 175 members of a jirga (tribal council) allegedly imprisoned in Mohmand Agency about a month ago. Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club, the students of different tribal regions, led by FATA Students Federation vice-president Shafeeq Ahmad Safi, Barhanuddin and Gul Sattar Mengal, rejected the Government’s move to force the tribal people to form anti-Taliban peace bodies. Shafeeq alleged that the political administration of Mohmand Agency had invited a jirga of 175 elders of the region and asked them to form an anti-Taliban lashkar, but on refusal they were detained under the 40 Frontier Crime Regulation. He made it clear that in the prevailing situation the tribal people could not afford such steps. “The members and heads of various Qaumi lashkars (community militia) are being killed in different tribal and settled areas, but the Government has failed to arrest the killers,” he said and added that it was the government’s responsibility to protect lives of the people.

Waving party flags and wearing ribbons inscribed with Koranic verses, dozens of tribesmen joined the throng armed with Kalashnikovs. “We announce the holy war against America if they attack Pakistan,” Siraj-Ul-Haq, the party’s deputy head, told the gathering. “The whole nation will wage a jihad against America and will fight against them shoulder to shoulder with Pakistani armed forces,” Haq added.

The Jama'at-ud-Da'wah (JuD), the frontal organisation of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) blamed for the 2008 Mumbai attacks, organised a rally on November 24 to protest the Pakistan Government's move to give Most Favoured Nation (MFN)-status to India, reports Indian Express. JuD leaders who addressed the rally accused India of being behind shortage of water that is affecting Pakistani farmers. Senior JuD leader Ameer Hamza told the protestors that the organisation's chief, Hafiz Mohammed Saeed, has assured Kashmiri separatist leader Ali Shah Geelani that the JuD would oppose any move to give India MFN-status. "When Pakistan announced that it might award MFN-status to India, Geelani called Hafiz Saeed, and he reassured Geelani that we will not leave Geelani alone... India can never be a most favourite nation for Pakistanis," Hamza said as the protesters shouted slogans against India.

Jama’at-ud-Dawa (JuD) on November 29 vowed to convert Pakistan into a Taliban state and to train young people to wage jihad (holy war) against America and India, reported Express Tribune. JuD activists as well as school children as young as 10 from various Districts were brought to the Lahore Press Club in buses and vans for the ‘Taleba Jama’at-ud-Dawa’ (Jama’at-ud-Dawa Students) protest against the November 26, 2011 NATO attack that killed 25 Pakistani soldiers in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). Addressing the rally at the Press Club, JuD leader Maulana Ameer Hamza said the army chief should know that he had the full support of the JuD, which would turn its followers into skilled fighters. “JuD will make all of its fighters into Taliban. There will be Taliban in Punjab University, in Government College, in Agriculture University Faisalabad,” he said. JuD leader Hafiz Saifullah Mansoor said they would kill 100 Americans for every Muslim killed. “Thousands of fighters are ready and waiting for a call from our leader Hafiz Saeed,” he said. However, students aged 10 to 15 from Jhumra Sandal Islamic School in Faisalabad District, and Tameer-i-Seerat Model School Sharaqpur in Sheikhupura District, said that they had thought they were going to a science exhibition and that’s what they had told their parents.

In the Difaa-e-Pakistan Conference (‘Defence of Pakistan’ conference) led by Jama’at-ud-Dawa (JuD) and Jama’at-e-Ulema-Islam (JuI), about 50,000 Islamists, including chief Hafiz Saeed, staged a protest at Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore on December 18 to condemn the United States (US) and India, while showing support for Pakistan’s military, reported Indian Express. The speakers also included Maulana Sami-ul-Haq, known as the father of the Afghan Taliban. Saeed vowed to avenge the creation of Bangladesh in 1971 and to continue the holy war in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). He claimed it was the duty of Pakistanis to take revenge for the killing of Muslims in Gujarat in 2002, the destruction of the Babri Masjid in 1992 and the killing of Pakistani nationals in the bombing of the Samjhauta Express train in 2007. Saeed warned the US to avoid creating troubles for Pakistan. Otherwise, he said, the JuD and workers of other like-minded parties knew what action to take, added Dawn. “Today I send out a message to Americans. We will give you due respect as guests in line with our religion. But if you come here to deprive Pakistan of its nuclear assets, to martyr our soldiers in Mohmand Agency-like incidents, kill innocent people as Raymond Davis had done and use our country’s airbases for spying, we will defend our country with full force,” he said.
