Two people died in a town in North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on January 30 where a pre-dawn rocket attack on a Shiite Muslim procession sparked a burst of sectarian violence, according to The Hindu. Army personnel were sent into Hangu, 100 kilometres south of Peshawar, capital of NWFP, to restore order after the rocket landed near police protecting the procession to mark the holy festival of Muharram. The two fatalities were from the Sunni community, said Mayor Ghani ur-Rahman. However, it was not immediately clear if the men were killed by the rocket or during the brief clashes between Sunnis and Shiites that followed. Nineteen people were reported injured.

Two people were killed in a shooting incident at an unauthorised procession of Muharram in the under-curfew town of Hangu in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) on January 31, adding to two deaths in a mortar attack on a Shia procession the day before, according to Daily Times. A curfew was imposed in Hangu on January 30 after a mortar was fired at a Shia procession and shooting broke out. The two people killed on January 30 were reportedly Afghan refugees who were not taking part in the procession. Defying the curfew, Shias staged a procession on January 31, which was attacked by two gunmen, an official said. Allama Khurshid Anwar told Daily Times that two people were killed and an equal number injured in the attack near Shahu Chowk.

At least 40 persons were killed and an unspecified number of them wounded at Parachinar and other parts of the Kurram tribal agency in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on April 7 on the second day of sectarian clashes. Arbab Muhammad Arif, Secretary (Security) for the FATA, told The News that 40 persons were killed and 43 injured in the fighting in Kurram Agency. He said authorities have not kept any count of the number of Sunnis and Shias who have died in the clashes. However, he denied the suggestion that Pakistan Army’s helicopter gun-ships had caused most of the fatalities by firing at combatants from the air. Conceding that the clashes have spread out of the regional headquarters, Parachinar, to other parts of Kurram Agency, he said efforts were being made to control the situation through effective measures. Earlier, Kurram Agency's Political Agent, Sahibzada Anees, said the government could resort to the use of helicopter gun-ships to intercept and attack fighters in the outlying areas of Kurram Agency to prevent the escalation of fighting.

At least 45 more people were killed during sectarian clashes in the Kurram Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on April 10-night and April 11 as Shia and Sunni combatants continued to attack each other’s villages with heavy weapons despite warnings of military action by the government against those refusing to stop fighting, The News reported. For the sixth day, fighting occurred in most parts of the Kurram Agency bordering Afghanistan. Certain villages such as Inzari and Shiblan, which were peaceful so far, are now reportedly witnessing violent clashes. Two other villages, Jelamai and Chardiwar, were burnt and more than a dozen of their male inhabitants were shot dead. The highest number of casualties took place in Sadda, when missiles reportedly fired from Ibrahimzai village on April 10-night hit positions manned by Sunni fighters drawn from a army of Massozai, Orakzai and other tribesmen. Sources said 19 men were killed and 30 injured. Combatants in Sadda retaliated with heavy firing at Ibrahimzai, Balishtkhel and Sangina villages. There were reports of death of eight people in this attack on Balishtkhel. Casualties in other parts of Kurram Agency included one dead and four wounded in two missile attacks on houses in the border village of Kharlachi, one killed and two injured in Shingak village, one dead and two wounded in Shiblan village. Three persons were injured when a missile allegedly fired from Afghan territory hit the border village of Bhurki. There were unconfirmed reports that 10 bodies of fighters were transported to their native villages in Hangu district for burial.

At least 20 persons, including two doctors, were killed and over 50 others were injured during a sectarian clash at Parachinar, the headquarters of Kurram Agency, in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) on November 16, reports The News. Power supply was disrupted in the area following the clash. The clash ensued after two people were attacked in Parachinar city on November 15. Later shops and markets were partially closed, according to Dawn. Paramilitary and Levy forces were deployed in sensitive locations, including places of worship in the town. Despite the presence of paramilitary personnel, warring factions started attacking each other’s positions with mortar shells and rockets. According to one report, army and paramilitary forces were trying to work out a truce and were making announcements asking rival groups to stop fighting.
