The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) on January 9 voiced concern at the reports of a number of journalists facing threats in recent weeks and asked the authorities to ensure that threats to journalists end, reports Daily Times. A statement issued in Lahore District by HRCP said, “The HRCP is alarmed at reports of threats received by journalists on account of their work. While it is not uncommon for journalists in Pakistan to live under a constant cloud of intimidation and violence, the perceptible increase in threats is manifested by over a dozen journalists killed in 2011, while many others have been forced to go into hiding. Many have exercised self-censorship for the sake of safety and others have suffered for airing views that are unpopular in some quarters. A number of journalists have recently gone public about the threats they have received from ‘anonymous callers’. They have also mentioned cell phone numbers of the callers but little has been done to identify or prosecute these people. A Government committed to media freedom must neither remain a spectator in the circumstances nor wait to be implored into action.” Further the report stated, “HRCP wants to remind the authorities that for two years now Pakistan has held the dubious distinction of being one of the deadliest countries for journalists. HRCP reiterates that those making threats and perpetrating violence against journalists are encouraged by the fact that out of over 70 journalists killed in Pakistan in the last decade, the perpetrators have been brought to justice in only one case.” HRCP urged all state institutions to acknowledge the dangers faced by the journalists, identify and prosecute those threatening media persons on account of their work and ensure that journalism does not remain a dangerous profession in Pakistan.

Pakistan was the world’s deadliest country for journalists for the second year running in 2011. Ten journalists were killed in the country last year, three of them in the tribal areas in the northwest of the country. A total of 11 journalists from the tribal areas have been killed since 2005. Reporters from Khyber, Kurram, Bajaur, Orakzai, Mohmand, North Waziristan and South Waziristan Agencies attended the six one-day sessions that were held at the TUJ’s headquarters from November 1 to December 4

A senior tribal reporter, Mukarram Khan Atif, correspondent for Washington-based Pashto language Deewa Radio and a reporter for a private TV channel, was shot dead by two unidentified assailants in Shabqadar area of Charsadda District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on January 17, reports Daily Times. “Mukarram Khan Atif was offering Maghrib prayers in a mosque in Shabqadar when the gunmen attacked him”, Safeehullah Gul, a journalist said. No group or individual claimed responsibility for the killing, although Mukarram had moved to Shabqadar after receiving threats from the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in his hometown Ghalanai of Mohmand Agency in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). His colleagues said Mukarram had told them about the threats to his life.

TTP's spokesmen Ehsanullah Ehsan and Mukarram Khurasani told reporters that the group killed Mukarram Khan Atif because he 'broadcast anti-Taliban' reports and they said they will kill other American radio journalists. The New York based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said in its newly updated Impunity Index released on April 17 that deadly, unpunished violence against the press rose sharply in Pakistan and Mexico, continuing a dark, years-long trend in both nations, reports Dawn. The global index, which calculates unsolved journalist murders as a percentage of each country’s population, shows that Pakistani authorities routinely fail to bring prosecutions in journalist murders, including several with suspected Government links, while Mexican officials are yet to effectively combat the murderous crime groups targeting news media in vast parts of the nation. It said that with 19 unsolved cases, Pakistan’s rating has worsened considerably in recent years. Intelligence and military officials are suspected to have played a role in a number of cases.

Reporters Without Borders expressed alarm over rising threats to the lives and safety of journalists working in Pakistan, ahead of the United Nations’ Universal Periodic Review of Pakistan, the organisation said in a statement on October 30, reports The Express Tribune. The organisation had recommended a series of measures designed to protect journalists in Pakistan in April. “A mere six months after our recommendations, media workers face even greater danger,” said Reporters Without Borders on the eve of the review. “The number of journalists killed continues to increase, and most of the investigations opened into these murders remain inconclusive, contributing to an intolerable level of impunity.” Since January last year, eight journalists have been killed in Pakistan, namely: Abdul Haq Baloch, Abdul Qadir Hajiazi, Abdul Razzaq Gul, Tariq Kamal, Aurengzeb Tunio, Murtaaza Razvi, Syed Saleem Shahzad, Mukarram Khan Aatif. The organisation further demanded the Human Rights Council to put Pakistani authorities on notice that “journalists must be protected from the daily threat of violence from armed groups.”

Senior journalist and anchor Hamid Mir escaped an assassination bid on November 26 when Police defused a bomb planted under his car in Islamabad, reports The Express Tribune. Mir, who hosts the Capital Talk evening show on Geo TV and writes a column for Jang, was criticised by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) last month in the wake of the shooting of teenage activist Malala Yusufzai. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the device was found stuck under the front passenger seat of his car. “There was half a kilo of explosives fitted with a detonator,” Islamabad City Police Chief Bani Amin said adding that officers had defused the bomb and were gathering evidence. Mir was on his way to his office and the bomb was apparently planted when he stopped at a market, said Geo’s Islamabad bureau chief Rana Jawad. “It’s a message to me as well as Geo and the journalist community in Pakistan,” Mir told the television channel. “They want to stop us from speaking the truth but I want to tell them that we will not be deterred.”

Allah saved his life but we will make a similar attempt again,” TTP spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan said by telephone from an unknown location. “Hamid Mir earlier shot into prominence for working in the interest of Islam and Muslims. We targeted him because now he is working against Islam and Muslims,” Ehsan added. Mir was criticised by the TTP in the wake of the shooting of teenage activist Malala Yusufzai.
