In the provincial capital Peshawar, after paramilitary troops were withdrawn from NATO terminals on the Ring Road for Muharram, militants once again launched attacks on parking bays of two terminals in the wee hours of January 13, firing six rockets. “Militants attacked the Faisal Terminal and the Khyber Ittifaq Terminal at midnight with rockets from the nearby fields. Four containers were gutted in the Khyber Terminal and two in the Faisal Terminal,” a Police official told The News. Two of the containers were empty while the rest were filled with different items being trans-shipped for the allied forces in Afghanistan. Police rushed to the spot, the unnamed official said, and engaged the attackers. Firing from both sides continued for quite some time after which the attackers fled.

Army engineers on February 4 built a temporary alternate route for traffic, including NATO trucks bound for Afghanistan – a day after the Taliban blew up a key bridge in Khyber Agency – as suspected Taliban torched 10 containers they thought were loaded with NATO supplies near Landikotal, Daily Times reported. In Landikotal, suspected Taliban militants doused with petrol 10 containers they thought were carrying NATO supplies, and set them ablaze. With most of the containers reportedly empty and only two loaded – four were completely destroyed and the remaining was partially damaged. The containers were torched as a security camp and bunkers in the mountains nearby came under attack. However, no casualty has been reported. According to an intelligence official, more than ten rockets, missiles and mortars were fired at the camp and outside the cantonment.

A suicide bomber rammed his explosives-laden car into a trailer carrying supplies for NATO forces in Afghanistan and injured seven persons in the Tedi Bazaar area of Jamrud sub-division. Eyewitnesses told Daily Times the bomber was heading for Landikotal when the troops signaled him to stop. They said that he rammed his car into the trailer instead of stopping. Fida Bangash, a senior political administration official, said the bomber’s likely target were the army engineers repairing a bridge in Landikotal that was blown up on February 2. Taliban spokesman Maulvi Omar claimed responsibility for the attack. “It was our man who martyred himself in Jamrud… We warned the government to stop military operations in Khyber, Swat and other tribal areas, otherwise we will completely shut down the NATO supply line… We have shown that we can do that,” Omar told AFP. Earlier, in the night of February 5, another suicide bomber had rammed a car bomb into a police station in Mingora in the Swat District of NWFP, injuring 11 soldiers.

In the first-ever suicide attack in a Baloch-populated area of Balochistan, at least four people were killed and 11 wounded when a bomber targeted a hotel in Kalat on June 30, Daily Times reported. The attack in Kalat District appeared to be aimed at disrupting supplies to NATO forces in Afghanistan. The bomber detonated his explosives inside a hotel in the Sorab area of the District, 250 kilometers southeast of provincial capital Quetta. Most of the victims were reportedly Baloch tribesmen. Witnesses said the suicide bomber, dressed in white traditional clothes, parked his explosives-laden vehicle outside the hotel on the Quetta-Karachi RCD Highway, and then went into the hotel. When he blew himself up, the ensuing blast also served as a detonator for the explosives in the parked vehicle. It may be a remote control device planted in the car, said Deputy Inspector General of Khuzdar Police, Ghulam Rasool Domki, while talking to The News. Reports from Sorab suggested that the explosion occurred in a car that was on its way from Quetta to Sorab. The car driver had parked the vehicle outside the hotel. Nobody has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.

The oil tanker caught fire and almost 50,000 litres oil destined for the NATO forces in Afghanistan was burnt, the sources said. Around 15 shops in Teddy Bazaar were also destroyed. A shopkeeper, whose name could not be ascertained, died in the incident. Four hours after the first bomb blast, the militants targeted the supply line to NATO forces with a time bomb planted on roadside on the Pakistan-Afghanistan Highway in the Shekhwal area of Landikotal subdivision. The blast is reported to have damaged the tanker when it overturned. Cleaner of the oil tanker, Abdul Majid of Tank, was injured, the sources said. Several vehicles carrying supplies for the NATO forces in Afghanistan caught fire after a huge bomb blast followed by heavy firing on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border near Chaman in the Balochistan province in the evening of August 30, The News reported. Police sources told APP that hundreds of heavy vehicles, mostly carrying supplies for the NATO troops stationed in Afghanistan, had to stop on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border near Chaman as all types of cross border movement had been suspended due to security reasons for the last two days. Prior to the explosion, a Police party deployed for security of the vehicles defused a bomb. As a result of the blast, several trucks and tankers transporting fuel and other equipment for the NATO forces caught fire. However, no loss of life was reported from the incident site.
