The Special Investigation Unit of the Sindh Police on January 12 arrested three former students of Karachi University involved in attacking the Imamia Student Organisation (ISO) with a bomb on December 28, 2010, reports Daily Times. The suspects included Mohammad Omer alias Chota, Hafeez Ullah alias Bilal and Syed Faiz Ali and are running their own outfit ‘Punjabi Mujahideen’. The arrests were made after a brief encounter at Mauripur road in Karachi and two hand grenades, one Kalashnikov, two repeaters, two TT pistols and one high roof vehicle were also recovered from their possession. The suspects are said to be former workers of Islami Jamiat Talaab from where they were expelled in 2007. The suspects are reported to be following Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan’s (TTP) ideology, which is evident from the fact that they got training in Waziristan, Augi and Miranshah areas of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).

A large quantity of arms and ammunitions were seized from a Karachi bound truck on the National Highway in Sindh on January 24, reported Dawn. The truck belonged to the New Friends Goods Transport Company and was on its way to Karachi from Miramshah, the headquarters of North Waziristan in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). The truck carrying crates of oranges was intercepted near Kotri Kabir town in Naushahro Feroze District in the province of Sindh. Four suicide jackets, 40 hand-grenades, two rocket-launchers along with 11 projectiles, three Kalashnikov rifles, 32 detonators, 10 fuses and a large quantity of drugs were recovered. Truck driver Ghazi, a resident of Dera Ismail Khan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and cleaner Marzak, of Tank District in Khyber Pakhtunhwa, were arrested and the truck was impounded.

Sindh Police on February 22 arrested two militants, including a close aide of slain Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ‘chief’ Baitullah Mehsud and a cadre of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), in separate raids at different areas of Karachi, reported Daily Times. Anti Extremists Cell (AEC) of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) arrested Alauddin Barki, a close aide of Baitullah Mehsud and an alleged member of TTP from Sohrab Goth area and recovered a TT pistol from his possession. The militant’s name was also included in CID’s Red Book List as he had links with terrorists in the city.

Anti-Extremist Cell (AEC) and Counter Terrorism Unit of the Sindh Police’s Crime Investigation Department (CID) disclosed the arrests of four alleged members of TTP and claimed to have recovered one suicide jacket, explosives, hand grenades, one smoke bomb, one detonator, 10-meter detonator wire, three Kalashnikovs, three TT pistols, five kilogram hashish and weapons from their possession during an encounter in Metrovil area of Orangi Town in Karachi. However, TTP Karachi Chapter chief Qari Zaman, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) member Qari Abid Mehsud, Tayab Mehsud and Shuja Mehsud, managed to escape. CID officials said that these terrorists have also been involved in an attack on Intelligence and Police officials at Sohrab Goth area of the District on January, 15, 2009 when Anti-Violent Crime Unit team raided terrorists’ hideout to recover an abducted Hindu filmmaker Satish Anand.

The Crime Investigation Department (CID) claimed to have arrested a Lashkar-e-Balochistan (LeB) militant Abdul Qadir Kalmati alias Raketi while he was planting explosives at the Garden Police Headquarters in Karachi, reports Express Tribune. A raid at a place near the Kathore Mor led the Police to the goldmine of weapons, where they found 107 dynamite sticks, four electronic detonators, an anti-tank mine, a BM rocket and 10 remote-control switches. LeB was held responsible for the earlier attacks at Police Stations in the city. “We have also found a hit list,” the Police chief revealed, adding, “Their next targets were famous personalities, higher officials in the Police, the Government as well as sensitive installations.” Kalmati confessed that his outfit is also funded by a “foreign country”. However, that country’s name was not disclosed.

Crime Investigation Department of Sindh Police arrested two suspected militants belonging to the Qari Shakeel group of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) from Sohrab Goth of Karachi, the provincial capital of Sindh on April 8, reports The Express Tribune. The arrested militants were identified as Shahid alias Goli and Mohammad Sharif alias Malang. Two pistols and ammunition were recovered from their hideout. He is involved in numerous target killings, kidnapping for ransom and extortion cases. A TT pistol and ammunition was allegedly seized from him and a hit list containing the names of senior leaders of Political parties and Police officers was also found on him. Afsar is believed to have joined the TTP in Mohmand Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) where he conducted militant operations against the Armed Forces. He is said to be closely linked with TTP’s Qari Shakeel group based in the northern areas and is charged of killing seven people in 2010 and one person named Farooq Ahmed in January 2011. Moreover, he carried out most of the murders within the jurisdiction of Pirabad, Mominabad and Site A. It was reported that there are more than a dozen active members of Afsar’s TTP cell in Karachi, who remain at large. The preliminary interrogation revealed that the suspect along with other TTP members was planning a huge suicide bombing mission in Karachi.

Sindh Police on September 7 arrested six persons, including a target killer, in separate raids at various parts of Karachi, the provincial metropolis of Sindh, reports Daily Times. According to Police, an accused Qasim alias Babloo, who is said to be a target killer, was arrested from Sector 7-A of Surjani in the limits of Surjani Police Station. The accused during initial course of investigation confessed to have murdered over 12 persons while Police also recovered a 9mm pistol from his possession. Further, Frere Police arrested five persons namely Kareem, Shareef, Abdul Malik, Jamal and Gulfam from Cantonment area. The accused were involved in an armed clash at Mehran Terrace of Cantonment area. Three repeaters, one shotgun and four TT pistols were recovered from their possession.

According to Police sources, over 2,000 Rangers personnel along with Policemen and sniffer-dogs conducted search operation in different parts of the city, including Lyari, Nayaabad, Daryabad, Agra Taj colony, Bihar colony, Baldia Town, Saeedabad, New Karachi, Iqbal Plaza near Radio Pakistan, Jackson, Gul Bahar and Rangar Mohalla. Some 200 suspects were detained along with huge cache of heavy weapons. In a raid in Lyari, they cordoned off Gul Muhammad Lane, Nayabad, Slaughter Yard, Singo Lane, Shah Baig Lane, Chakiwara, Kalakot and other areas. Sources said the law enforcers also held Zafar Baloch leader of Aman Committee but released him within couple of hours. However, Rangers did not confirm his arrest. Rangers also picked up over 130 suspects but released many of them except 17 alleged terrorists including Rashid Rekha, Mullah Nisar, Saeed, Rashid alias Tension, Asif and Hanif. The sources also confirmed that Rangers recovered three dungeons where people were brought for tortures and killing. The two were recovered from Gul Muhammad Lane and one from Nayabad while Rangers was yet to confirm the recovery of dungeons. The LEAs also seized cameras installed in various locations and mobile jamming devices. Rangers claimed to have recovered a huge cache of weapons, including licensed weapons. The illegal weapons recovered were rocket launchers, SMGs, hand grenades, Kalashnikovs and other sophisticated weapons.

North Nazimabad Police arrested an alleged target killer Noman alias Nomi after an encounter in their premises and recovered a repeater from his possession. The Police said Nomi was involved in three murder cases and belonged to a religious political party. The Quaidabad Police arrested two alleged target killers Salman Ali and Salman Shah after a brief encounter at Sherpao graveyard. The Police said the accused were involved in the murders of four persons, including a Police constable, and had confessed to throwing bodies in gunny bags after killing them. Two TT pistols were recovered from their possession. In another raid, Sir Syed Police arrested a narcotics dealer from North Karachi, Sector 11 and recovered two TT pistols and hashish from his possessions. At least seven persons, including five terrorists and two Policemen, were killed in a blast in a hi-roof van of suspected terrorists at Sea View at Clifton in Karachi, the Provincial capital of Sindh, on November 16, reports Daily Times. According to reports, two Police Constables were patrolling on a motorbike when they spotted a suspicious hi-roof van. They tried to stop the van, on which the suspects sped away toward the dead-end of lover’s point situated adjacent to the Village Restaurant. When the Policemen came near the vehicle, one of the suspects inside blew himself up. Resultantly, all five suspects inside the vehicle died instantly, while the Constables sustained injury. They succumbed to their injuries later. Deputy Inspector General (DIG, South) Commander Shaukat confirmed the death of five terrorists in the blast. He said that two of the bodies were completely dismembered due to the intensity of explosion, adding that a heavy cache of sophisticated weapons was recovered from the van including a suicide jacket, Kalashnikovs, detonators, night goggles, torches, a ladies wig and a first aid box.

The two suspects , identified as Abdul Wahid alias Lala alias Guddu and Mohammed Shakeel, disclosed that they had buried more arms and explosives in Haji Mureed Goth of Khamosh Colony. A raid was conducted there which led to the recovery of 20 kilograms of explosives, three kilograms of ball bearings, a five-meter-long detonating cord, three detonators, one hand grenade, a Kalashnikov, an MP-5 gun and hundreds of bullets. The alleged militants further disclosed that they belonged to the Punjabi Taliban Group and worked under the command of Ustad Qari Aslam who had been issuing instructions to them from his hideout in Waziristan Agency of Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and who directed them to gather information about Intelligence Agencies and Government buildings in Karachi as well as about Police officers and Ulema (religious head) and scholars from the Shia and Qadiyani sects.

The suspects were identified as Alauddin alias Shakirullah, Farhan Khan alias Ali, Amir Shahzad alias Mufti Asadullah, Irfan alias Mavia and Shah Jahan alias Adnan Munna. Alauddin is the chief of the Punjabi Taliban group in Sindh. The group is led by Ustad Aslam.
